  • Is Podgorica worth visiting? The general consensus seemed to be no so I went anyway! Join me on a tour of all the main sights (Millenium Bridge, Old Town) in one of Europe’s least visited capitals.

My objective was to find out what there is to do in Podgorica and what the most interesting places to visit are in the city. This is the grand finale to my week long Montenegro road trip and I was determined to make it a memorable one!
Although I arrived in Podgorica Montenegro late in the afternoon I was still determined to see as much as I could - including both the new and old parts of the city, the recently finished Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Саборни Храм Христовог Васкрсења) and the landmark fountains in Independence Square (Трг независности).
As I walked around I realised the city has much more to offer than it gets credit for and I wondered if it gets overlooked because there are so many other incredible places to visit in Montenegro.
After strolling across another new addition to the city skyline - the Millennium Bridge (Мост Миленијум), I headed into the old town with the hope of seeing some historic mosques and an old clock tower built by the Ottomans in the 17th century.
The river area was really interesting and I saw the Old Ribnica River Bridge (Stari Most Bećir Bega Osmanagića) and the historic ruins of Depedogen Castle (Tvrđava Depedogen). I then made my way through the old houses passing Starodoganjska Mosque (Стародогањска џамија) and the Osmanagic Mosque (Џамија Османагића) on my way.
It was great to be able to walk around at my own pace and do a little bit of sightseeing instead of joining an organised walking tour of Podgorica.
My road trip through Montenegro was amazing and I enjoyed every moment of it! The mountain trails, fortified cities, natural wonders, beach resorts, historical fortresses, hilltop towns, great lakes, national parks and those narrow, winding roads were all part of an experience I’ll never forget.
Thanks for joining me on the journey and let me know in the comments what you think about Podgorica? Would you include it in your itinerary? See you in the next country!

Love the stray dog report 😂! That bridge is really neat. Podgorica has been through a lot, but it's still beautiful!

@@MattWhitingsEurope quick question though. When I was looking at Montenegro about 6 years ago I was told I need my passport on me at all times. Is this still the case?

The latest travel advice I'm aware of is that you must carry an official government issued form of ID at all times. So as a British citizen that would mean a passport or driving licence. They're the main ones anyway. I think I stuck with my passport just in case, although it's good practice to keep a copy in a safe place. Hope that helps!

You're absolutely wrong about the tourists in Podgorica, there is literally too many both people and cars at the moment, I live there since I was born and it has changed completely last 5 years, the population got doubled in those years. Anyway great video, you have a lot of great places in Montenegro, make sure to visit as much as possible!

Perhaps it was the time of year I visited then? I didn't see many tourists in Podgorica and was told that most people stick to the Kotor area. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the videos. As a local, are there any other places you'd recommend I visit in the future? I've heard that Durmitor National Park is well worth a stop?

The places you must see in Podgorica: Nikolin dvorac, Plantaže, hotel Podgorica (its architecture), Medun, Komovi, vodopad rijeke Cijevne, listen Ksenija Cicvaric's singing, brdo Gorica, KIC Budo Tomovic, stadion Buducnosti,...

Did you have any difficulties with the language?. I guess English is spoken in every tourist area, but if I go far from it I should expect some difficulties in terms of communication, right?

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  Před 2 měsíci +1

Yeah that's nail on head right there. Places like Budva and Kotor were no problem at all but places like Podgorica and Lovcen were a little more challenging - I guess they see less English tourists overall. The younger are also more likely to speak English than the older. I didn't have any real issues though as most of where I visited take in day trips from the cruise liners and Boka Bay.

30 cents an hour to park; yes, that's a bargain! I've been to Podgorica twice - to their bus station! 😂

Ha I don’t think you are alone! Not many people venture in but I’m glad I did, interesting to see even if it was for just a few hours! Thanks for watching!
