  • Searching for another side of Tallinn just outside the old town I came across the cool and trendy neighbourhood of Kalamaja & the artistic, freethinking former industrial area known as the Telliskivi Creative City.

After spending a couple of days inside Tallinn’s old town I decided to venture out in search of a less touristy alternative scene that I heard was thriving just outside the city gates. Packed full of local markets (Balti Jaama Turg), abandoned railway tracks, brick water towers, outdoor food outlets and Tallinn houses I knew this would be an area that got the blood pumping.
Kalamaja was a small but thriving fishing village back in the 14th century - it’s where fisherman and fishmongers lived and worked. For centuries the famous fish markets would dominate the region and people would flock here to pick up the daily catch coming fresh off the waters.
When a railway was built in the late 1800’s it brought an influx of people looking for work, within years factories and large industrial units opened up changing the area forever. As industry declined and workers headed elsewhere looking for jobs the factories closed down and became vacant.
From abandoned buildings and derelict warehouses came the Telliskivi Creative City (Telliskivi Loomelinnak) - an area of art, culture and heritage. Old railway tracks, industrial units, water towers and train station platforms have been creatively reused to link the businesses of today to their industrial past. I enjoyed taking a walk through the neighbourhood and even stopped to have my dinner there!
Long streets of old colourful wooden houses still exist in the Kalamaja district and they’re close enough to take a walk through on your way down to the old fishing harbour. It’s great to see the various ‘Lender’ and ‘Tallinn’ houses that are unique to this part of Estonia.
I passed a massive brick smokestack and popped inside briefly to learn a little more. It seems that the former power station and chimney are now known as the Cultural Hub. From there I walked to the waterfront in search of a relaxing sunset to end the day. I wasn’t disappointed.

Nice views Matt. Always glad to see when former industrial-scale structures are reused, as is possible, rather than demolished.
Several miles of Railroad Track beds in the areas surrounding my hometown and nearby cities have been, and are continuing to be, converted/repurposed.
They're turning the former Railways into really nice Trailways for walking, running and some bicycling.
Many miles through beautiful scenery that only Cargo and Coal Train Engineers would have been able to see on their daily routes delivering goods. Now used by pedestrians as a way to go on shorter leisurely nature walks or long runs as you like traveling safely from town to town or city to city.

I'm with you on that, always great to see this kind of thing happening - so much better than flattening it and starting again. Those buildings are part of our heritage and history. Glad you enjoyed the video!

That little park is Šnelli park and the lake is part of the medival moat to protect the city walls.

Were those patches on that table? GET OFF THE TRACKS YOU MAD LAD! Someone left you a glass of wine in the chimney stack. Should of had a sip.😱😱

I could hear the whining brakes of a runaway freight train - that’s just how I slide 😂. Yeah I think they were patches although I didn’t spot them at the time - it’s easy to miss stuff when I’m looking at the small screen on the camera. Had it have been a beer I might have considered it 🤭
