  • A one day tour of Trakai, Lithuania - a small town 30 minutes drive from Vilnius. Whilst there I explored a magical island castle on Lake Galve & a colourful little old town complete with wooden houses

After spending a few days in Vilnius I decided to catch a bus to the small Lithuanian town of Trakai and see what things are like outside the capital. I knew there were two places in Trakai that I really wanted to explore - the picturesque island castle and the older quarter along the banks of lake Galve.
As I headed into town from the bus station I came across some pleasant walking trails close to the lake and what appeared to be a waterside park. This is where I spotted a bridge that led me over to another island and some old concrete buildings in a prime spot overlooking the lake and castle. The buildings were heavily damaged and clearly abandoned, nonetheless they made for a really interesting location to explore.
A little later I made it across to Trakai Castle which was originally built on an island way back in the 14th century. Over the years it has been used as home for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and was later on transformed into a prison. The castle was strategically important and easy to defend owing to the fact it was surrounded by the deep waters of Lake Galve.
Trakai Castle eventually fell into ruin but was renovated and reconstructed over the course of many decades, with work finally being finished in 1961. A museum was added inside the castle walls and most of the buildings were opened to the public.
There's way more to this little town than a castle though! Brightly coloured wooden houses and pretty little streets make for a wonderful walk around. There are souvenir stands out by the lake and plenty of pedalos available for rent.
My day trip from Vilnius to Trakai was a fun experience and if you’re in the area I’d recommend coming too!

You are a stair expert, so we'll take your word on the safety of them! We would come stay in your hotel if your built one there. Man on boat looked really cool. Nice capture. Pizza with a view! You always find the best sunsets! Great job Matt!

Thanks, as good as it was to see Vilnius I really wanted to get out and see what things were like away from the big city. Glad I chose Trakai!

Yes from same bus station in Vilnius . It was so hot even with all windows open and stunk of b.o 😂😂😂

Excellent video Matt! I'm in Vilnius at the moment and thinking of going out to Trakai tomorrow 😊 it looks very idyllic. I'll be staying away from that dark doorway for 'free hugs' (3:47) though, that looks like it could be a danger zone 😅

Haha yeah I’d stay outside if I were you! Will be interesting to see if they’re still in the same state - I’m certain they’ll get rebuilt and turned into luxury apartments or a hotel. Glad you enjoyed the video, hopefully you make it there! If you do go, have a wonderful time and be sure to let me know what you think of it!

@MattWhitingsEurope I did go today and I had the loveliest time! Its very idyllic there and it was very very quiet (with it being March and all I suppose). I went on the train and thought the train service was really great (much better value for money than I'd get on any southeastern train journey 😅) there was a really nice range of birds and wildlife there, too- I'm a big fan of birds and bought cranberries and grapes for all the hooded crows 😁 and I think the abandoned buildings in your video have started being built into fancy looking houses (unless I was looking in the wrong place!). It was nice to have a break outside of Vilnius itself, too 😊

Glad you were able to get out there and have a look around, I can imagine it being a great area for birdwatching and nature - plenty of opportunities for a relaxing day. Yes I feel that lots of train services around Europe put ours to shame - both in terms of convenience & cost. Glad you enjoyed your visit, I take it you didn’t get any ‘free hugs’? 😂

Definitely, such a peaceful place. And agreed, most train services in Europe completely put English train/public services to shame, in cost and quality 😔 its very dear to take the train anywhere in England. And haha, no, no free hugs were given or received 😅 it was an entirely civilised day 😅

Haha glad to hear it. Thankfully I don't use the trains all that much in the UK but every now and again I'm reminded of the cost. Crazy!

Greetings✌🏻 I know you did day trips via bus. Would you recommend it? Did you find yourself limited by the bus schedule or do you think I’d be better off renting a car for various day trips? Thank you for your much appreciated advice. Keep those videos coming👏🏻👍🏻🤙🏻✌🏻

The buses and trains were all reliable and seemed to have a decent timetable. I decided to stick with public transport as I could get everywhere I wanted to go by using it. A car would be great to visit some of the countryside and more isolated parts, however it's a bit more hassle in cities and large towns as you have to park it somewhere. If I do a similar trip in the future I think I would hire a car and explore the countryside a bit more. Glad you're enjoying the videos, hope my answer helps.
