  • Take a tour of Estonia’s incredible Maritime Museum at the Seaplane Harbour in Tallinn. The Lennusadam includes the submarine Lembit, the icebreaker Suur Tõll & a domed concrete seaplane hangar.

I arrived early in the afternoon to find a very wet and rainy Tallinn & decided my original plans of walking around the Kalamaja neighbourhood would be troublesome because of the weather. I elected instead to find somewhere dry and interesting - and the Maritime Museum sounded like a great option. I bought a ticket and headed inside.
Estonia’s maritime museum opened in 2012 and is located inside a large concrete seaplane hangar. It’s impressive to see domes built into the large concrete roof and no supporting pillars whatsoever. It took me 15-20 minutes to walk there from Tallinn old town and is nicely positioned on the seafront.
The museum itself is home to the Lembit - a submarine built by the United Kingdom in 1936, and the rugged Suur Tõll - an icebreaker built by the Russian Empire in 1914 and captured by Finland shortly afterwards. There’s over 200 historical items on display both inside the seaplane hangar and outside in the harbour. A ticket allows you to freely walk around both.
I know very little about the sea so it was adsorbing to walk around and witness some of Estonia’s maritime history for myself. The hangers are colossal and from the inside it's hard to see how something so big and heavy can support its own weight - but it does, and it has been for over 100 years.
After strolling back to the old town and my room at the Meriton Old Town Garden Hotel I’ll show you what £40 a night will get you in central Tallinn.

In addition to the comment I left below- I love your travel map! How did you create it? 😄

I used Google My Maps which lets you customise certain aspects and add pints of interest. It's quite basic but it does the job!

We love Tallinn! That museum is so incredible. It was our first time in a submarine as well. Remember what you told us: there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!

That saying is so true! Yes I love the city as well, not a place you hear much about in the UK so I'm trying to change that.

Regarding the Prison, they're set to do a complete revamp of the whole building, which will include a new permanent museum in the place of the old temporary exhibition, which was really interesting but quite heavy and depressing. Unfortunately though it's not set to open for a couple years.

Thanks for the update, it's a shame in a way as I thought the temporary exhibition was gritty and real - very poignant. I;ll make a visit there in a few episodes time. Still, interesting to see what will become of the place - I'm sure they'll do a good job of telling the story. Shame it's not re-opening for a couple of years!

The building you were in was not the old sea fortress which is actually the half-ruined building nearby, called the Patarei Fortress-Prison ("the Battery"), intended for a defensive fortress, but later mostly used as a prison. The building you were in is the seaplane hangar which was used to store seaplanes during WW1.

I was just looking at visiting Estonia and seeing the Seaplane Harbour. The opening times on the website are a little bit confusing. It also apperares to be closed untill May 12th.

Really? That’s a shame. Just checked the official website and yes it does say it’s closed until the 12th May.

fun fact: 'kalamaja' is pronounced like kalamaia (stress on the 1st a), and in direct translation means 'fish house'

Thanks for the information, I have a video coming up in a couple of weeks where I walk around the Kalamaja district. Thanks for helping with the pronunciation!
