  • Another epic day in Montenegro exploring the abandoned Austro-Hungarian Fort Gorazda on the hills above Kotor and then a walk around Cetinje, Montenegro’s former capital city.

Fort Gorazda was built by the Austro-Hungarian empire between 1884 and 1886 and now lies completely abandoned on the hills above Kotor. It amazes me that nobody has turned the site into a tourist attraction - with at least some sort of preservation project in place and a fee to get in. Instead the fortress sits empty, neglected and crumbling away on a quiet hill above the bay - seemingly forgotten about.
I decided to take a drive up the windy narrow access road to the fortress and partake in a spot of urban exploring. Urbex is definitely alive and kicking in Montenegro. Whilst there I saw the original turret and machine gun positions built into the structure.
Due to the lack of maintenance it’s an exciting place to explore but also quite dangerous. There is no lighting inside, no railings to protect against sudden drops and plenty of broken glass and sharp edges. It’s definitely worth a visit but proceed with caution!
After learning about Fort Gorazda I got back on the road and continued my Montenegrin road trip driving through the mountains until I reached the city of Cetinje.
Cetinje is Montenegro’s former capital and a busy yet relaxing place to take a walk around. It lies about an hour's drive from the fortress on the other side of Mount Lovcen at the foothills of Lovcen National Park.
Cetinje was founded in 1482 and went on to become the capital city of Montenegro between 1878 and 1918. Famous for its 18th century monastery the city is a great place to take a leisurely walk around and enjoy the architecture and history.
