I am having trouble differentiating between the imperfect and the preterite when referring to specific time periods and what constitutes talking about the specific actions that defined the period versus describing the period itself. I have an example in my book that states that even if a past tense verb is being used to describe what use to happen, emotions, what was being done etc if it refers to a specific period of time you use the preterite, ex: Los soldados fueron muy agresivos durante el tiempo que duró la batalla. it is describing their actions but since it has the period of "during the battle" it is preterite. But then I had an example that seems to break that rule and it is breaking my head: "Durante la primera guerra mundial, los Imperios Centrales. que ERAN Alemania, Austria-Hungaría, y después el Imperio Otomano, se enfrentaron a la Triple Entente, que ESTABA integrada por Francia, Rusia, y el Reino Unido". Why is it eran and estaba when we are describing these during a specific time period and not fueron and estuve?
