Hello and thank you for stopping by! Thanks also for the support and subs! Today we took out our 10ft boat called sharky on the river and we tested three outboard engines, an Evinrude 45, a Mariner 3.3 and finally a vintage British Seagull 40. We didn't sink the boat but we did have a few issues, no matter, it was a fun day! Edited on Sony Vegas Pro 13.

Hi frend do you sell parts for sea full too. I realy neet too or tree parts
Just fix up one of these motors. Runs great. But the replacement gas tank was expensive
@@robertusa1234 nice one! Let us know how you get on when you take it out on the water 👍⚓️
bravissimo! io ne ho uno uguale e ho fatto gli stessi lavori che hai fatto tu
Thank you, you explained very well!Thank you once again!😊🙏
You’re very welcome! Happy sailing! ⚓️
My brother had a 45 sitting outside leaned against the barn for over 20 years. I took out the plugs lubed the cylinders put fuel to it and started second pull. Great little motors
AFTER LOOSING MY SEAGULL IN A NEARBY ALASKA LAKE OVER 1,200' DEEP, I THOUGHT IT WAS GONE FOREVER. NOW AFTER WATCHING A CZcams ON MAGENET FISHING, I ORDERED A LARGE MAGENET, WISH ME LUCH...
Good luck and have FUN!
I think someone already found your outboard and sold it to Mustie1. He just posted a video of a completely rusted out Seagull.
@@CristiNeagu OH WELL, I AM NOW IN THE MARKET FOR A REPLACEMENT.
Nice! I was reading the tohatsu 3.5 instructions manual and it seems to have a confusion about open/close choke. Did you see that?
You show the choke being put on by pushing UP; but in the next frame the choke is shown to be DOWN. Which is it?
For a first time start, or on a cold day, close the choke, so push down, start the outboard and slowly open the choke. If it is a hot day like the day was in the video, or the engine is still warm from running earlier, then open the choke by pushing the switch up or else with the choke closed, it won't start. Hope that helps, happy sailing!
On all Mercury's with the red cord kill switch, all you need to do is press in on the kill switch and hold it with your finger to shut the motor. No reason to pull the cord.
Your S K E G at bottom of motor is not bad.It can be built up by someone who knows what they are doing but I have seen simalar perform all right.CHEERS from HERE!
Thank you! That's really good to know, hope to get it out on the water this year now I've had surgery.
Please don't mix these engines at 100:1, even though OMC did recommend this light mix a few years after this engine. That was a sales gimmic that resulted in alot of damaged powerheads. It is probably best to remove that mag plate to lube everything up properly, although I understand trying to lube it externally just to see if you can get it running. There are two surfaces that need to be properly lubed: the plastic outer bushing (that you lubed with spray) and the inner pilot bushing and boss and the crankcase. Those throttle cables get stiff/ruined easily as well, and are expensive to replace. Best to get one of the motorcycle syringe style cable oilers in an attempt to get the inner cable core well lubed. Did you change the gear lube? Those gearcases are a soft spot on these engines, the lube should be changed often. These were great old engines, glad you revived it!
Thank you for your excellent explanation! I didn’t know that, but I hope to get the Evinrude 45 back out this year and running as soon as I have recovered from surgery. Maybe I’ll do another video about it, and as you say, lovely engine!
Awesome video! Tomos 4 the best small outboard out there

Can somebody help please. I need that electronic box for my 4-8 Thomas Tomos
Have you tried eBay?
@@skipperstan Not yet.
@@geraldmicallef6575 try eBay first as that’s usually a good place for outdated outboards. I doubt we can get new parts for Tomas 4-8’s anymore?
Comprei um barquinho e veio com um motor tomos trailer 3 hp gostaria de saber se é 2 tempos ou não precisa de misturar óleo oleo
If it is 4 stroke, it will probably say on the cover. Check to see if there is an oil reservoir or ecu. Sounds like it is probably a 2 stroke though.
Tomos 3
Muito obrigado é um tomos 3 e não tem reservatório para óleo e estou usando com a mistura de óleo 2 tempos na gasolina muito obrigado mesmo
Great boats. I'm on my 3rd Shakespeare, they are spot on
Fantastic! Which model do you have? I would love a mini clubman.
@@skipperstan I have a Shakespeare 650 Mk2 but there is an argument that the boats are not related. Shakespeare boats existed originally under the ownership of Bill Shakespeare. Then after they closed down the moulds were sold to Waverider who made your Summersport in Essex (I think). Then in the early 1990's, Shakespeare was resurrected by the late Francis Whitley who made my 650. Technically they are all 3 different companies but the original spirit of Shakespeare runs throughout in my opinion....
Gentlemen of culture, we meet again.
I used to have one of these boats, went out to sea, hit two waves and the cabin windows fell out! I sold it shortly after because even on a calm sunny day it felt like i was out in a storm 😂
OMG! Too scary! I haven’t taken mine out on the water yet as the weather has been too bad this year, looking forward to some fun on the water though! ⚓️
@@skipperstan it will be great fun
I have a 1977... never run...
Nice classic! Are you going to try and get it running? ⚓️
You dont need to pull the cord to shut it off, just press the big red button inwards and it will stop.
So how do you stop the engine if you fall overboard? You can't push the big red button in because the cord keeps the button in the open position as it is a safety feature. If you fall overboard with the cord attached to yourself, it will pull the cord out cutting the electrical circuit to the spark plugs and kill the engine preventing serious injury. If you had to push the button in to stop it as you suggested, then why have a safety cord? Hope that clears things up for you, happy sailing!
@@skipperstan try it and you see what i mean, the cord has to be attached to be able to start the engine but it also activates the red stop button. So leave the cord in the engine and push the red stop button and the engine will stop with the cord still attached to the engine, in other words, you can stop the engine by either pulling the cord OR pushing the red button, both ways will shut it off, but the cord has to be in place for the engine to start. That goes for most outboard engines, including tohatsu 3.5 hp, i have one myself so i know it works that way, hope that clearify things for you lol
@@SignedSign that's really interesting, I honestly never knew that, much appreciated! I will give it a go and report back, I might even make a quick video showing it. Many thanks for the tip! 👍⚓
That broken fin on the bottom of the motor is called a skag, and if it's not all there the boat will not handle good at all,
That's interesting to know, thank you! I will have to get that sorted before I take it out on the water, could cause a few issues otherwise. ⚓
Of course it will 😂
Indeed it did! ⚓
@@skipperstan just got one myself after a quick carb clean it started second pull
@@stuwhite2337 Well done! It's quite satisfying when they work after fixing them, they might be basic but at least they are fairly simple to work on. I have a few others in the pipeline to fix, not sure if it is worth doing any videos on them as I have already done two Seagulls?

Hello sailor! It's a year 2000 model ⚓

I've just bought one. What set up do you use for anchoring .
Great job Skipper she’s sounds sweet as a nut. 🫡👍
Thank you! ⚓
Great video Skipper 🫡👍👍
Thank you! Much appreciated! ⚓
Morning Skipper, I’ve recently purchased the same outboard, I decided to do a service so I downloaded the workshop manual, I’ve got to the point of replacing the old gear oil, I looked at the manual and it says 360ml approx but I’m not getting anywhere near 360ml before it comes out of the top hole. I was wondering if you had similar issues or is it just me lol 😂. Thanks for the video 🫡🫡
Hello Sailor! Yes, make sure you turn the gearbox upside-down to ensure all the oil has come out, and turn the prop around a few times just to get it all out. Other than that, refill it until it overflows, don't worry too much about how much oil goes back in, so long as it reaches the top hole. Always a good idea to measure how much old oil comes out when draining, assuming the previous service put the right amount in. Gives you an idea of how much new oil to put back in. Hope that helps, Happy Sailing! ⚓
Where did you find the workshop manual? I recently got one which came with a j24 I bought and I'm having a bit of trouble with keeping it running once started
@@loops99 hello again! I can't remember exactly where I got the manual from but it would have been online somewhere. If you are having trouble keeping the Outboard running, make sure that the fuel is fresh, even if it is a few weeks old, replace it. Ensure the fuel to additive ratio is correct and remember to push the choke back in as it warms up. Hope that helps 👍
Hi what are the correct steps for flushing the Tohatsu outboard in this video? I have just inherited this model and just paid to have it serviced. Really enjoying your channel
Thank you! I tend to use a Marine Engine Descaler, you can buy them from most marine suppliers. Just run some of that through your engine in the same way as when you stick the outboard in a bucket of water. That should remove all the junk and limescale, clearing the waterways. Check the water outlet flow before and after to get an idea if it is better, and also have a look in the bottom of the bucket after cleaning through to see what junk it has pulled out. Hope that helps, Happy Sailing! ⚓
@@skipperstan great thanks for the valuable information. When flushing are you supposed to turn the fuel cock to off?
@@stephenkeogh7901 Pop your Tohatsu onto a stand and make sure the prop is in a large bucket full of cold water. Ensure the water inlet and exhaust outlet are fully submersed, and the water teller spout is over the bucket so the water can circulate back into the bucket. Add the descaler in accordance with the instructions depending on how much water is in the bucket. Start engine in neutral and let it tick over for say 30min, or more if you want, then stop the engine and allow to cool. Keep an eye on the outboard and water flowing out to ensure that no junk has blocked the waterways. If needs be, repeat the process again, that should dissolve any salts in the cooling system. Might be worth making a bleed pipe for the water outlet out of a bit of hose to return the water to the bucket. 👍
they are water cooled and have a plastic impeller, that was not pumping water, maybe not in enough depth but dont run for to long unless you can see water coming out the hole in the barrel

At 7 minutes, hope you used enough marine grease so it doesn't stick in the future? Unfortunately, it is common for it to stick, and grease prevents it. Nice channel.
