  • Just picked up two Tohatsu two-stroke outboard engines, one is a 3.5hp long shaft, and the other is a 2.5hp short shaft. In this episode I strip down 1999 Tohatsu 3.5hp outboard to see if there is any chance I can get it running?

Just fix up one of these motors. Runs great. But the replacement gas tank was expensive

Morning Skipper, I’ve recently purchased the same outboard, I decided to do a service so I downloaded the workshop manual, I’ve got to the point of replacing the old gear oil, I looked at the manual and it says 360ml approx but I’m not getting anywhere near 360ml before it comes out of the top hole. I was wondering if you had similar issues or is it just me lol 😂. Thanks for the video 🫡🫡

Hello Sailor! Yes, make sure you turn the gearbox upside-down to ensure all the oil has come out, and turn the prop around a few times just to get it all out. Other than that, refill it until it overflows, don't worry too much about how much oil goes back in, so long as it reaches the top hole. Always a good idea to measure how much old oil comes out when draining, assuming the previous service put the right amount in. Gives you an idea of how much new oil to put back in. Hope that helps, Happy Sailing! ⚓

Where did you find the workshop manual? I recently got one which came with a j24 I bought and I'm having a bit of trouble with keeping it running once started

@@loops99 hello again! I can't remember exactly where I got the manual from but it would have been online somewhere. If you are having trouble keeping the Outboard running, make sure that the fuel is fresh, even if it is a few weeks old, replace it. Ensure the fuel to additive ratio is correct and remember to push the choke back in as it warms up. Hope that helps 👍
