- Rebuild of a 3.3hp Mercury. An easy simple motor to see the internals of a two stroke outboard. I rebuilt this motor because it was missing both seals and a few other internal parts which meant it was only good as an anchor.

The flywheel is bolted down to the crank which has a slight cone shape to it so it really locks on.
I put the flywheel nut back on loosely (covering all the crank thread but up two turns so I don’t damage that) I pull up on the flywheel with my hand (where the pull start bell is) and tap the flywheel nut (making sure to tap it squarely) to loosed the friction it should pop off.
I am very carful not to damage the crank nut or the crank nut thread, I take care and don’t rush things, I don’t just hit things, I keep a close eye to make sure I’m not damaging anything.
It is easy to squash the crank thread or deform the top of the crank nut. If i am unsure I try using a alloy block on top of the crank nut to lessen the risk of damage.
I believe you may be able to make a jig too using the bolts in the flywheel to remove it but I’ve never had to go that far.
I am happy to tell you how I do it but It is just the way I do it, do it at your own risk, It is easy to damage the little cranks in these.

I’m not that familiar with the 2hp lightning. I would probably start with contacting a Mercury dealer and seeing what parts they can supply.
I think that the 2hp Mercury lightning is a bit different to the 2.5hp and 3.3hp and the parts may not be interchangeable.
Definitely call a Mercury first and supply your model number. They may be able to give you the actual part numbers too even if they cannot supply, you can look up the part numbers online from there.
I normally order my parts through Mercury or tohatsu for my 3.3hp but will order through Yamaha if working on a Yamaha etc.

is that bottom seal in correct, uaually the spring goes inside the crank to seal pressure in, it may work either way I am not sure, 🤔

That is the correct way for the seal and the way it is installed from factory, I’ve checked many times with lots of motors. I know it feels like it should be the other way but keep in mind there is another two seals in the lower seal - drive shaft tube.

Hey mate,
Tohatsu (which makes the 3.3hp Mercury two stroke) states that the m6 bolts are torqued to 6.5ft pounds.

Hello i wondering if you can help me. i have ordered a head gasket for my 3.3 because there is a leak when the engine is running from the join. Do i need to do anything else or would that be enough to solve the issue.

It should be enough to solve the issue unless the block or head have corrosion that is causing the leak.
If the block has corrosion it is a little tricky to sort. If the head has corrosion you can put some sand paper on a piece of flat glass, place your head on it and sand it to remove the problem, do not sand more than 1/2 mm.
Make sure you scrape clean both surfaces before putting the new gasket on.
Make sure to torque the head bolts to the correct torque.

I would personally order them from Mercury.
Also check your threads in the block, make sure to Helicoil them if they are flogged out otherwise you will not be able to torque them without them stripping.

I use 50 to 1 two stroke outboard oil ratio.
I use 25 to 1 for a tank after a rebuild to run it in.

Lower crank seal looks upside down.
Could well be and good eye.
I put it back in the way it was installed when I disassembled the power head, not saying it was correct to start with.
The way I installed it does make sense though to keep water from the trunk out of the lower crank bearing.
I still have this motor and use it regularly on a tender (great motors).
I don’t think it would matter too much if it was installed the other way as well.
I will ask my friends at tohatsu which way is correct.

The lower crank case seal is installed from factory the way I installed it. I’m just rebuilding a 2016 3.3hp and it’s installed from factory the way I installed it.

What parts are you after? Gaskets? Rings? Seals?
You are probably better giving your engine number to a dealer and then they can supply the correct parts, that’s what I do.
There may be slight differences in parts between year models etc.
This video is to try and help people putting motors back together.

Dude needs a tripod. Idk why people decide to make a video and not be prepared to take the actual video.
Spielberg was busy that day and couldn't make it so he had to improvise. At least you know how to rebuild a motor now.
Tripod was used many times during that video 😂
In saying that the primary goal was to rebuild the motor and second goal was to put up a quick video that helped people rebuild their motors. Achieved both goals as you can see by most others comments.
Keep in mind you really don’t get paid for these vids, I only do vids to help people with their outboard work or to make them smile when they see the silly stuff I’m up too.
