This motor was basically seized up when we got it, and a look with the borescope showed some real damage in one of the cylinders. In this video, we’re going to disassemble the powerhead on our Mercury Tracker 40 2-stroke to see what can be saved and what needs to be trashed.
We’ll work out way around the engine first: removing the intake and carburetor, and then removing the electronics on our Tracker 40. Then, we’ll use a flywheel puller to address the flywheel, and after that we’ll crack the engine open.
And oh boy, wait ‘til you see that piston.

Is the power head removal similar to a 1996 Mercury 40hp oil injected 4 cylinder dual carb?? My engine failed this weekend and I am planning on rebuilding. Thankfully I have had a few of these Motors and I feel confident tearing it apart.
So the 90’s tracker 40hp 2 strokes were 2 cyl while the mercury was a v4 ??
The linkage that goes from the timing adjustment screw up to the part below the flywheel, what is the part called that this linkage hooks to. Also, when disconnecting this linkage should there be a lot a wiggle in this part? Mine seem to be very sloppy.

Hey I have the same motor except it’s a 30. I have a question I have it set up with a tach and the manual says to set the tach to setting 4 I’m using a (Faria gauge). It reads the engine at 1000 rpm at idle which can’t be true because that would grind the gears of three lower. If I had to guess it’s running 500-600 rpm at idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
