MerCruiser Bravo 1 Gearcase Oil Change | MerCruiser Bravo 1 Lower Unit Oil Change | Boats.net
See how to replace the gear lube in your Bravo One outdrive in this video from Boats.net.
This is an easy job, and you should replace the gear lube on your MerCruiser Bravo One once a year or every 100 hours. All you’ll need to do this is a flat head screwdriver, a pump, and the lube.
John will use the trailer switch here to get the gearcase up so it will be easier to drain. From there, he’ll open the check vent and the fill. Both of these screws have gaskets behind them, so make sure you keep track of them during this job. If you’re replacing the gaskets? Be sure to get the old ones out. Sometimes they don’t come out with the screw and you’ll need to dig them out.
Then, we’ll use a hand pump to get the fluid into the gearcase. It’s going to take around two and a half to three quarts, and you’ll know it’s full because you’ll start to see fluid come out of the vent at the top. From there, we’ll close everything back up.
Check out the pump and the lube we’re using here:

Hey John, I am hoping you can help, I have a 1998 yamaha 40hp 2 stroke, when I bought the boat it cranked and ran perfect but needed a water pump, I changed that and then when I tried to crank it I lost all power to switch and trim, I used a jumper wire to get motor down, a week later I tried to crank and while trying to crank lost power again, I wiggled the wires to switch and got power back, then it would crank and stall after a few seconds, I put new plugs and primor bulb on still the same, next day I drained and cleaned gas tank put fresh gas in and drained carb bowls, now it won't crank at all, can you help me.

Hi John, Your reply is very much appreciated. Once I removed the 2 screws and followed the prying at the arrow points, the center portion on the Verado chaps area just popped off.. Too easy once you see how. Job all finished and new anodes installed - tricky to get to that deep anode bolt but an extension socket worked so all finished and reassembled.

To remove the rear cover You should remove cowl release handle. There is 1ea 8mm bolt that holds it on. Next remove the two 8mm bolts for the rear cover. Note the small arrows on the cover. Gently pry at the arrows and the rear cover comes off.

For salt water launches, every year service/check is a good idea. For fresh water launches, if you have replaced them and know all is good, your choice. I recommend if you buy a used trailer, replace with new hub kits to establish a base line, where you know what you have.

Next advice: forget air filters (most outboards don’t have one, secondly I’ve never had a fuel filter that clogged so bad fuel couldn’t make its way around (so being it’s probably water in the fuel with ethanol being the cause most of the time). That leads me to water making it through the system or ethanol derived scum blocking electric fuel pumps or creating electrolysis derived crust in the carbs. Additionally softening/melting or hardening/cracking fuel lines and carb needles. Yes ethanol can soften and or dry out and harden. Moral of the story ethanol is the bane of boaters existence

Wrong answer: like my Dad said, never ever F with Idle adjustment screws from factory settings. Always fix the problem, gummed up carb, leaky float needle (running rich, my problem 80% of the time lately), out of timing or ignition issue. Every used Briggs seems to have the idle adjust screw F’d with. With that one I think standard is all the way in then out 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 Thread. The problem with outboards factory settings aren’t always standard.
