  • What’s the difference between a fuel filter and a fuel water separator on your outboard? Primarily one very important thing: what they each remove from the fuel headed to your motor.
In this video from Boats.net, John will walk you through the differences in your fuel filter and your fuel water separator, and we’ll also take a look at some different kinds of fuel water separators. John will also give you an explanation of how fuel water separators work and which types work for different marine applications.
We’ll also discuss fuel flow rate, and how it impacts the types of filters you choose. If you choose a filter that cannot fully accommodate the flow of your fuel pump, you may be leaving performance on the table by choking off some fuel flow to your engine.
What about removable fuel tanks on your boat? We'll talk about whether or not it’s necessary to use a fuel water separator when you’re using tanks that aren’t out on the boat and quite as susceptible to condensation.

Thanks! Where can I find fuel rate flow for outboard motors?

So the filter in the fuel/water seperator is only for filtering water, and doesn't also act as a fuel filter? Guess I'll leave the traditional filter in line then. So, if you can empty water out of the clear lower section at what point do I need to replace the fuel/eater filter? Does it wear out of clog up, or is it "fit and forget" as long as you empty any collected water out?

Can a fuel water separator be used with an older 2 stroke outboard (50 hp Mercury 1987)?
