- How does an outboard ignition work?
In this video from Boats.net, John will guide you through the outboard ignition parts that make up your ignition system. He’ll explain the role each part plays, from charging the battery so that it can start your outboard to powering the spark that ignites the fuel inside the engine. We’ll also talk about some of the innovations in modern outboards that change the how the ignition system works
If you’re outboard ignition troubleshooting, this video will help you make decisions about which parts of your outboard ignition system can be ruled in… or out as the problem.

Good morning. Been going through your videos while troubleshooting mercury 75hp 4 stroke. Carbs been cleaned rebuilt, all jets cleaned etc. It will turn over, fire and stop. Does not keep running. Fuel pump lines etc , proper ngk plugs all done. Any suggestions on this paperweight be greatly appreciated!.
Excellent productions. And presentations!!
I was always taught fuel, spark, and compression
Good Morning John and thanks a lot for your video. I have a Yamaha 8HP outboard and the kill switch failed. I replaced it by a conventional ON-OFF switch. Does it the same function? Because where I live I do not have the possibility of buying the original replacement, so far. Than you.
Questions- on a 67 115 mercury where should black/green stipe wire go to on motor, or is it needed on that year’s ignition system, also is mercury switch needed on the switch box grounded with trigger ground on switch box, please help.
At 4:19 you say it allows the voltage to build up, don't you mean the amperage? Voltage generally does not build/increase without a tranformer (I.e. the Ingnition coil).
I have An engine Bombardier Johnson J90PL...problem no spark in spark plug....how to check was ITS part problem.thanks
