- See how to change the thermostat in your outboard in this video from Boats.net!
We’re working with a Mercury Tracker 40 2-Stroke here, and you’ll need three parts:
Mercury 40 replacement thermostat: www.boats.net/product/mercury...
Diaphragm: www.boats.net/product/mercury...
Gasket: www.boats.net/product/mercury...
We’re rebuilding a Mercury 40 2-stroke outboard, so we’re removing the thermostat from one motor and moving a couple of pieces over to a rebuilt motor. However, the process is the same if you’re just removing and replacing the thermostat on your motor.
We’ll start by removing the thermostat cover basically so we can get to a spring, the diaphragm washer, and the end cap that holds the diaphragm in place. We’ll remove the old diaphragm and get a new one in place, and then we’ll position the spring and a new thermostat on the cover.
Then, we’ll take the whole assembly and bolt it in place on the new engine block.
Find the thermostat in the top right of this diagram: www.boats.net/catalog/mercury...

In the video we’re working with a 2002 Mercury Tracker 40 2-stroke outboard motor, but you may have similar steps for your Mercury outboard. If you’re not sure whether these steps apply to your motor, leave a comment and we’ll get back to you.

Thank you so much! This video really helped me a lot.
btw, where did you get that lifebouy declaration on your wall? looks cute☺️
I have a Mercury 4 stroke 115. Is there a video on the location and install of the thermostat for my outboard? Thank you
The diaphragm that you removed from the old engine was sitting on top of the gasket (gasket was up against the block). When you put it on the new engine you put the gasket on top of the diaphragm (gasket was up against the thermostat cover). When I did mine it seemed to go together better with gasket on block. Which is the correct way?

Does my 1983 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke have a thermostat?
My 40 keeps leaking between the gasket and the engine wall
at what temperature does the thermostat open on a mercury engine, I started the engine, the water was 30 degrees Celsius, it ran for 15 seconds, the water didn't come out of the back, I heard a knock, I turned it off, I started it again, the water didn't come out again I heard a knock, I turned it off, I left it for a while, the temperature rose to 50g. celsius and the water started to come out and it works perfectly, I don't know what happened, I looked at the second start, a little smoke came out from the front to the stern, then it worked perfectly. - MERCURY 40hp. 4t EFI 2013
what if run the engine without thermostat ?
Thats what I want to know.
GReat video, any reason you dont reply to questions? You want subscribers but you cant take 5 minutes to answer a question about a 25 hp mercury??
John has a weekly livestream Q&A here, try that.
Was your question about the warning buzzer? I answered that one a couple days ago if my failing memory serves.
