  • See how to check a used outboard before you buy it in this video from Boats.net.
    Outboards can take a lot of wear and tear out on the water. In this video, John will tell you about what you need to look for in a used outboard. From the aesthetic things that might be readily apparent to the hidden things you might not see without doing a little testing.
    Here’s your used outboard checklist:
    Will it fit?
    Any damage?
    Check the oil color.
    Check the water pump.
    Check the cowl gasket.
    Check the oil level at the dipstick.
    Check the spark plugs.
    Do a compression test.
    Crank it up for a test run if possible.
    Does it include controls? If so, what is their condition?

    About 8 years ago my friend and I were bass fishing in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. We were fishing the shoreline and going back and forth using a trolling eclectic motor. When arrived there was a small boat on a lift with its motor running. It was about a 1 or 2 year old Merc 15 or 20 horse power and the guy had it far enough out of water that no water was peeing out the side of the motor. I thought about yelling to him but his house was 300 feet from the shore line. So we fished for about 20 minutes and the guy never came back down. We left to another spot. So buying a used engine is a crap shoot.

    John,
    Can you help me in determining if an F225-TRXD mid-section will accommodate a F225-TURC powerhead? My (TURC) is subject to the corrosion issue and found a mid-section. Same year and hp (04' 4-stroke, 225TURC). Mine is a 30" shaft, and the other is a 25", but I'll just swap over the adapter and shift rod. I'd appreciate your wisdom on this..

    All great tips. One more thing you might want to check is spark especially if you can't see it running.
    I just bought a used motor without seeing it run. The seller told me there was spark and compression. It was cheap so I took a chance. It needed some work to get it started. The reason I bought it was for spare parts since I have the same motor. It may turn out to be a better motor than the one I have.
    When shopping for ANY used ICE equipment, bring a compression tester and spark tester. They're cheap. If it's a 4 stroke, you'll want to see it run since you can't check timing.

  • @waynecole1918
    @waynecole1918 Před 2 lety

    Hi John, I have a "rookie" question about the fit of an outboard. My transom is 20" from top to the Vee in the center of the hull. So I'd be looking for a 20" shaft on whatever motor I end up with. My question is, which plate is the cavitation plate on the motor? I see there's a smaller flat/horizontal plate, (sticks out towards the front of the boat) which is about 2" ABOVE the next, larger plate below it, (sticks out towards the rear of the boat) and is bigger than the one directly above it mentioned just now. In this video, you seem to touch/point out the upper plate when you're speaking about the cavitation plate,, is the upper plate the "cavitation" plate?.

      @davidriley2479 Před rokem

    Hi i want to know how to compare the hours of a motor with "miles" lets say a motor has 500 hours from 50 miles an hour i get 25000 miles on it. is that assumption correct? thanks

    • @joedennehy386
      @joedennehy386 Před 2 lety

      There is no way to determine this but very few outboards in the world would average 50mph. Half that would be more accurate. Remember every journey starts with launch, idle, low speed away from the ramp. And not many boats can even travel 50mph
