The North Pennines - Long Man And Five Pikes
A break from the rain and cold led to me going out for a short hike around the Weardale/Teesdale area. With bright sunshine (but still windy) I ventured out to ascend two hills, namely Long Man and Five Pikes. After ascending these two summits I return to the car via a very picturesque small valley, Sharnberry Gill before heading off to video a little special factoid about something in the local area, but what could it be?
Total Distance3 :- 4.98 miles (8.01km)
Summits achieved :-
Long Man 1755ft (535m)
Pawlaw Pike 1601ft (488m)
Five Pikes 1568ft (478m)

    An excellent and much needed rant at the end. I am forever battling keyboard ecologists about the importance of peat bogs. People look at the moors and they see a barren waste void of trees and they mistake that as an ecological disaster, often linked to a hatred of grouse shooting. I am no fan of the shoots but the moors are far from barren, they're teaming with life if you only take the time to pay attention and walk them. Thank you for the knowledge about the ditch, I did wonder about it when I was there myself, I recognised it as man-made but couldn't place it. I actually thought it might've been some ancient roadway. I walked it slightly different to yourself and did another summit on the far side of the road, and I noticed what appeared to be a bit of tarmac road in the middle of the moor that was very bizarre, alas, I didn't have the time to go an check it out. The spot where you asked what this road was famous for, and I am thinking, that's the exact spot I came out to the world on CZcams before bagging those tops.

    • @DuncanBaxter
      @DuncanBaxter Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks, a lot of ecologists come out with the idea of replanting trees and trying to reforest the moors but from what I've seen and experienced a lot of trees do very badly on the moors and grow poorly or not at all, especially on the tops. The climate has dictated that they are now moss covered moors (that are teeming with life) not human activity, it is just a shame we have added to its destruction in the past. In the future who knows? I have seen efforts to try and repair the damage but don't know if it's too little too late ☹️

      Hi, thank you for the subscription and glad you like my channel. I am assuming the route from the road is via the Yad Moss ski slope which is certainly the shortest route to the summit of Burnhope Seat. Some people will also reach the summit via a slightly longer 'there and back' from Killhope Cross. If you fancy making a full day of it I can heartily recommend my fourth upload on my channel which was a circular hike from Burnhope Reservoir to the summits of Great Stony Hill, Burnhope Seat and Deadstones then back to Burnhope Reservoir. Its a full day, I think approx 17 miles and has some nice views and surprises along the way.

      Thanks, I was blessed with nice weather that day and a very varied landscape, it is a mountain that is often overlooked but has a charm all of it's own. The music simply added to an already stunning landscape. 😊

    Beautiful hike, Duncan. I love the waterfalls. I caught your shoutout on Patrick's channel. I came for a look-see and have subscribed. New Subscriber from Stafford England. Quid Pro Quo? Irregardless, thanks for sharing. I love that you compose your own music too. I wish I was that gifted. I'm just an OAP hiking in the Peaks.

      Thank you for your kind words and your subscription, it means a lot to me. We are blessed with a number of waterfalls in the North Pennines, nature done the hard work, I just capture them on video. Regardless of age it's nice to know you are still out there enjoying the sights the Peak District has to offer, that is the most important part of all 😊

      It is a lovely area, the weather just comes with the territory but the views more than make up for it 😊
