Holy cow, the one trick of taking a photo of your black model to see how it should reflect seriously bridged the gap for me! I always struggled trying to decide where to apply them 😅. It's so silly now you've shown me that!

Come to think of it, i realised many oil paintings have that same effect of stippling to create texture in paintings, so actually its a professional artist’s technique thats been around for a really long time!

I settled on some decent Rosemary and Co Red Dot Synthetics along with some Princetons. Very good brushes without paying absurd amounts.

Noob question: How important is painting in sub assemblies? I always think like "oh no if I assemble it now part X will be hidden behind part Y and I won't be able to paint it" which means my dudes are always semi-assembled and not painted at all. Guess I answered my own question there, thank you, carry on, I'll see myself out.

Painters use a technique where they grey scale a painting and then colour it using washes. It would be interesting to see how that would look.

The triad is genius. I'm a new painter and having a gradient of paints ready for me to learn and work through removes a whole lot of anxiety for me. I don't know why more companies don't do it.

I get it. This is a year old, but the new line of Army Painter does'nt suck quite as hard as it used to. Also, on a lark I bought some Apple Barrel matte black to just try it out... from now on, this is my go to basecoat. Properly thinned its AWESOME. I am so PISSED that i spent so much on "Good" paints all these years. Never be afraid to try something different now and then.

Thank you for making this video. I’m looking to create black Templars and Necron armies, and I’ve already bought a bunch of citadel paints. I’m just glad that at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what paints I get as they are all equally good in their own ways.

Give Payne's Gray or Davy's gray a try, as an oil-wash for white. IMO , way better look than any Black - which I think are too harsh.

My most recent project (Chaos Legionary Kill Team) My secret tech was to Basecoat the ENTIRE miniature in SILVER on top of my grey primer Then Fill in the armour panels with the red or black colour I wanted for them while avoiding the trim as best i could which saved me all the time of picking out all the silver trim around each panel.

Good ol ink washes were my favourite before GW scraped them for the modern alternatives. You could really water them down and still get a good result, that just bled into all the crevices like we see in this video.

Im a noob. But I found some cheap-o oil colours a few months ago .Bought some spirits. And now I have tried it. And oil-washes for filling lines etc is realy THAT easy.

Have you tried enamel paint + enamel paint thinner ? I found that it worked absolutely amazing, and you could remove unwanted parts of it with a brush or cotton tip with some enamel paint thinner. You don't get that left over shade that's annoying to remove, because you're literally removing the wash.

Great inspirational video. My misfortune is that I paint wargame armies (and not those pitiful 8-man squads of super soldiers). I am just starting a 400-man 15mm War of 1812 army (both sides) In between I'm painting 28mm Pirates for skirmish games. And the great sadness is that my fellow gamers will not care a whit if I even stayed in the lines. Red on top, white on bottom? Must be British.

When I started miniature painting, Citadel was really the only game in town. I had painted models as a kid with enamels (Testors), but I hated them. I got used to the Citadel range, so I'm comfortable with them - except the dreaded White Paints. I suffered through those chalky, nasty pigments until I finally kept hearing that Pro Acryl was SOOOO much better. It is better. Not by miles, but by enough that I can use it with far more confidence than the Citadel ones. I think as long as you're getting results you're happy with, any brand will work... :)

On the have a good space to do your painting. If you have little space and have to have your stuff in a box, don't have it in a random box just with all the stuff tossed in. Make a custom box, one which you just pull out and poof, all the stuff is there ready for painting. You could even make it all fancy with hinges and stuff, but that's not needed, just so that the stuff can be brought out in a single go without hunting through random boxes to find the stuff. I know full well how easy it becomes to excuse away starting up, and i just have to literally turn around to start painting/building models.
