Considering GW have literally sold joke models, one of which actually being a cook, I think the mini may not have been 'too goofy' but they might have thought that a man with an Italian flag, making pizza, might have had the potential to come off as derogatory? Clearly it's not, it's a fun little model and I'm sure it'd be well appreciated, but I've a feeling that it being a bit stereotypical may have made them iffy on rating it properly.
I personally love the model. It's well painted too, I really love the oven mitt.

This was my first thought too; snowflake syndrome. Let's suck all the fun out of the world because someone MIGHT get offended! Though I'm not sure what's worse; that or GW genuinely being so draconian and anal about staying 'within the brand' that they just outright nuke anything that isn't grimdark.

I always wondered what is more valued at Golden Demon:
- Display of painting prowess (brush control, supreme highlights, etc)
- Overall effect (display, pose, color palette)
Because after seeing finalists and winners - I have no clue.
You'd think for finalists and up you'd get some basic feedback with second and third placings getting more detailed feedback etc

The Slayer Sword winner has a large variety of meticulously painted differing textures, along side a strong theme/story being told in the pose, basing and framing.
Similar for the US Slayer Sword, almost flawless execution across various textures, strong theme.
It's painting.
You have to follow the 'Eavy Metal style almost flawlessly. I've seen AMAZING pieces that never made more than finalist, and winners or contenders who barely scratched half the quality some put down. (Lets be real here, one of the Golden Demon finalists for the duel category back during LVO was a bunch of the gobbos on the hopping squig chasing down a peasant..)
"Rejected for not respecting warhammer intellectual property" meanwhile GW has a lore character named: Inquisitor Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau. It's always been goofy since the start
To be fair, I think that dude has been decanonized. But yeah, I always chuckle when GW pretends to care about IP law.

As an Iron Hands player and pizza lover, I totally appreciate that mini!!
I mean to play devils advocate: There is a hard rule about using the iconography of real world institutions. It probably wasn't disqualified for being a meme, it was probably because of the Italian flag.
At the end of the day the most fun activity at Warhammer Fest was chatting with the hobbyists from our amazing community!
It was great to talk to you mate! After speaking with you about advice on my SOB bases, I have removed the red tufts and just kept the green forest look like you suggested. I have also painted more highlights on the face of my Morvenn Vahl to bring the main attention. It looks so much better after your advice, thanks for that! Keep doing what you're doing!
It was a genuin pleasure to meet you at Warhammer Fest, and you really are as nice in person as you are in your videos. After our discussion about feedback on videos, this one is great, the Rimming joke landed well.

1:55 .. it's not because of that .. GW wants at all costs to prevent the creation of others Duncan Rhodes for example.. therefore, more and more they will be a "faceless" brand

Why do you think this is the case, what’s the problem with Duncan?
@@veryblockyt's not a problem with Duncan himself, both sides (GW and Duncan) have said that his parting from the company was on pretty good terms. The issue is that, due to his popularity among fans/customers, when he left to pursue his own goals and created an independent line of paints and tools, those who were more fans of Duncan than GW started to pur hase HIS products over theirs.
@@aubreyray4348 I mean that's also in part to the fact that Duncan's paints don't use archaic bottles and aren't shit. Typical corporation, no innovation when you can keep failing.
There are no booths because people running GW are completely out of touch. They think that if there is a face you can put on GW, it's somehow a threat to them.
This is why painting tutorials went the way of onlyhands, artists aren't credited, and so on.
They're complete idiots who don't understand that youtubers who used to work for them keep making them money. Duncan's videos sell GW models, everyone with at least 2 brain cells can tell you as much, and they're doing it as free advertisement.
They are correct though. Duncan, Peachy, Louise, all doing their own thing and Duncan for example is a direct competitor to gw now with his paints. Also happened back in the day with game designers etc.
@@BSJDynasty They are wrong though as Duncan, Peachy and Louise all keep generating money for GW. Aren't they the ones saying: We are a miniature company first?
Yes, not being part of GW allows them to create competing products like paints but in the bigger scheme they help grow the hobby and what is better? 100% of 1 pizza or 66% of 2 pizza's?*
*If both pizza's are equally yummy >.>
Not sure if it shows, but apparently a lot of ex-hasbro execs moved into GW during around 8th edition, at least on the EU side of the business.
@@chad4858 Sure they can do what they want but those that left have grown the overall industry increasing the potential market for GW. As it said, "A rising tide lifts all boats" and GW with the biggest "boat" stands to gain most from a larger industry. And while short term people leaving has small inconveniences for GW but the long term really the policy just hurts them.

I only felt confident enough to paint Sons of the Phoenix because of your tips and tutorials on painting white armour so thanks so much again for those. Glad you had a mostly fun time here in the UK and sorry we speak too fast!

Ay I made it to the video! It was so nice talking to you in line. It's a true shame that your entry was disqualified. I have to say that I was super excited to see your models in person. It's like "hey I know this one from Insta".
This reminds me of an incident back in like 2012 or 2013, when I was working at the Golden Demon jury myself (being an Ex GW employee). We used to have three judges back then. We all decided on putting a certain piece in second place in the open category. It was a beautiful piece by, as it turned out later, a French lady. That piece was a large tiered wedding cake, topped by a Stone Troll couple who were just married. It was beautifully crafted and painted, with hilarious detail such as the Troll „wife“ still munching on a piece of cake she had grabbed from the cake while climbing it. All judges loved that entry, but we got stopped by the IP wardens and it was disqualified instead. I had to explain that to the creator afterwards, which was really heartbreaking. But yeah, there are no Troll weddings in the Warhammer universe, and neither are there Techmarine pizzaioli. Fair enough 😊
Shame, Open should be Open, i've seen GD entries of Space Marines painting Epic marines not get disqualified, is mini painting more likely than pizza?
@@artic78 Well, frankly yes it is. Painting is part of „the hobby“, while weddings and crafting pizza is not. It‘s a fine line though.
@@artic78 Was the Space Marine and Blood Angel, because the arts is kinda what they do on their down time...other than partaking in actual blood.
They should have a category called "Whimsy". It's like the Eurovision - nobody seriously expects a good song but it's fun to watch and maybe... just maybe... we'll all root for an underdog of sorts and just enjoy each other more. It's only a game.

Simon, I met you with my son on the Saturday afternoon session. You were very generous with your time and really interested in talking about the hobby. Top guy and much respect-your videos are super examples of advanced painting techniques made easier (and intetesting). It is wild that this got disqualified when at the Chicago Adepticon there was a cupcake titan with whip cream and a cherry on top holding a Dairy Queen spoon that had no issues and was one of my personal favorite entries. I feel like a guy with pizza is way less of a divergence from their IP

They do, just not for stupid entries lol
I think there was a good amount of creativity on display, pretty disrespectful of the other contestants to claim otherwise.
@@jorgeclarkson4639 but why not have an entire reward art is art no matter how stupid the fact someone took time to paint and create their own mini for a game they love its ridiculous that you wouldn't make it an actual reward for it on top of that saying it's disrespectful to the game and it's characters shows alot about the company

Nice! Three finalist pins!! Well if anything this shows you that you are doing something right when it comes to judging. Its no demons but to have all 3 qualified serious entries awarded, that counts for something. I guess now you know where you stand and hopefully it gets you more pumped to go all ball sack on your next entries
Games Workshop disqualifying anyone for disrespect OR IP infringement is ironic. What a dumpster company.
It's laughable how little self awareness they have, or perhaps they don't care how hypocritical they are. Could be either 🤷
I bet there will still be people defending them in the comments though.
Another great video. That Nurgle taunt is awesome. Glad you had a good time meeting viewers at least. (Savage_Ork_Guy said much the same in her video about it, and she only had to drive a couple hours to a free flat. )

Spotted you at one point but you looked pretty busy. With you on fest, we queued the 40k demo for 2 hours before giving up (we mathed that we'd still have another 1 hour 30 minutes to go).
That sucks getting your entry disqualified. .
The worst thing that happened to us was after not being able to play a tourney in over a year due to covid, we travelled to Nottingham for Warhammer World for a tourney, my mates imperial guard army was about 5 years worth of painting and converting to make a stunning city fighting, police style army, all his Chiamras were converted to wheeled vehicles to fit the theme.
Sadly they had decided to crack down on 3rd party or 3d printed parts being used so banned his entire army despite the only 3d printed parts being the wheels, everything else was pure GW.
He was so pissed he decided to drive straight home, 10 hour round trip driving for nothing, he quit the hobby after that. .
Same thing happened with an army I had commissioned painted for someone else, It was Chaos Knights, It was Khorne themed so I had made chainaxes to replace all the Chainswords on all the wardogs and the Rampager, he had to snap them all off to be allowed to play and then he was told his army wasn't wisysig so was disqualified. .
He just plays stock armies now,

Three finalist pins is “disappointing”?? Most Warhammer painters would be over the moon at that kind of recognition at Golden Demon.

May I ask...whats a bigger award. A finalist pin or a commended entry card? I heard of finalist pins before. My 40k painting goal is to enter Canadian comps like Canadian GD.
If you get a finalist pin with your entry, you made the first cut. If you got a commended entry card, you made the second card (so it's better). That means that all the commended entries received the pins as well and are in a final selection between the Golden Demon winners.

Thank you! The hanger is from IKEA and the shelf for brushes is a brush holder thing from Hobby Zone (polish company). I drilled some holes in it to be able to hang it and sprayed it white so it doesn't look off

I've said it in other videos, but I fully agree that if I wasn't in a tournament, I wouldn't have had a clue what to do for most of the time there.

I liked the duel you made, it was fun and better than at least one of the winners.
Not that i paint to golden Daemon standard but the only thing that stood out as "wrong" with the duel one is it appears that the goblin isn't looking at or oriented towards his intended target.
May I suggest a Salamander space marine, preparing a wood combi-melta oven for the pizza?
I really like your work and, as italian, I'm very happy of the representation in your art!
A thing I've heard noted a few times about "duel" entries is that there needs to be physical interaction between the combatants - ie they should actually touch in some way, not just be two guys pointing at each other. With how inconsistant the judges are, it's a hard call to make, though.
Also, I absolutely love your Pizzaris!
I would love it if it was the case, but last year there was a winning piece where a terminator was pointing his stormbolter at a charging tyranid and in the same manner there was bronze this year that was shooting eldar at a chaos space marine (both are amazing and from the same guy btw)

Being new to the hobby I had big expectations for the Fest but only came for one day to try it out and I'm so glad I didn't do more. Like you, I saw everything I could be bothered queueing for but I didn't have any fans to chat to so gave up and went home late afternoon.
I expected so much more, lots of small activities, booths, instant entertainment rather than queuing for hours.
Unless they announce big changes I won't bother again next year.
And love your chef and duel, definitely two of the better entries I've seen.

Honestly, They probably heard you referring to queues as "lines", and decided that's just not cricket old chap, so they disqualified you out of principle, and quite right too! 😄
So GamesWorkshop’s Warhammer Fest is like GamesWorkshop’s online pre-order events: you have to wait so long and it’s not guaranteed you’ll get what you came for. Oh the beauty of it all.

Golden Demon needs a "Dont be so Serious" category.
I didn't go (not that into warhammer) but the general impression from people who did seems to be lots of queues (NOT lines - it was in the UK!) to see not much content. GW appears to be notorious for the opaque way that Golden Demon competitions are judged so entering appears to be a shot in the dark. Having said that I can see why they would disqualify an entry that takes the p*$$ out of their hallowed IP. Outside of the competition I love that piece and bet many others do too. What is this hobby about in the end? Multinational companies trying to maintain a stranglehold on what people do with their IP or people with paint and little plastic figures enjoying themselves? Nuts to the competition - stop stressing yourself and have fun!👍😁
They should just add a category for "funsies" tbh. No big prizes or anything, just "yeah, these don't really fit, *but* they're awesome, and we liked them, so here they are!"

you can convert, but can't use bits from other manufacturers. There are rules online that you can find :)

GW doesn't want faces behind designers. They make the reasoning due to bullying of Matt Ward, but deep down it is mainly because they are worried about people jumping ship

From what I’ve seen about wh fest, was it seemed like so many ppl enjoyed meeting creators, I think GW should invite more creators and make that part of the fest, like it would be best if they would pay them too, but we all know they won’t do that😅

I understand the dissapointment when being judged for some artistic work and not once did I see Art being rated as I thought it should be. Doesnt matter my work or someone elses being the object of judgement and this is particulary true on Conventions ive been.
So dont too sad, this Hobby and the work you put in there shouldnt be for Jurys, but mainly for youreself and people who like and enjoy it😉

The English talk fast. I married an Aussie woman with Italian parents. Try keeping up with Italians in full flight. In the mean time, Hatty from Mid Winter Minis had her entry turned down. She had turned a great unclean one into Mr Boogedy which unfortunately trod on the toes of IP for a movie. Some times the decisions they make are risk averse.

No designers are because of the same reason as the only hands decision. They don’t want the public getting to know them and then seeing them leave because of the horrific way GW treat their talented staff
loved your dual piece, man. Should have at the very least taken Bronze IMO. I know the level of work at GD is incredibly high, but quite often I don't get why some thing place over others I think it must come down to taste (or a more disenable eye than I posses)

At this point I legit think that they should have a silly competition based around funny submissions. I LIVE for seeing silly models being shared online.
There definitely should be a meme/joke category, like, the quality would have to be up to standards but the themes would be jokes, I bet it would be a banger.
