The BEST Warhammer Miniatures at Golden Demon 2024!

- Last weekend it was Golden Demon, the world's BIGGEST and BEST Warhammer Miniature painting competition!
Every year I'm always blown away by the skill and talent displayed in the entries but this year really felt like something else...
This is a quick rundown of some of my personal favourite entries from Golden Demon 2024!
I wish I could have made this video longer and included all of the entries I wanted to but nonetheless a HUGE congrats to everyone who entered a miniature into Golden Demon this year!

My jaw dropped when I saw the mirrored vampire, so well done.
The Orruk Warband , the Miniatures themself have so much Character. I painted that Warband myself. In General the Bonesplittaz Orruks are very cool.
the entries (and the amount! wow!) of Kwan Ho Kim and David Ugolini have some of the most incredible paint work ive ever seen. both using very different styles and technique, but the rigour they have used in getting there is just without equal.
has to be either the space hulk diorama or the power wash personally! loved the video too
Hands down the Slyaer Sword winnign diorama. The Old World Silver being a close second for me.
That terminator diorama is what warhammer looked like in my head as a kid in 1998
That’s because it looks just like the box art of the era. A combination of Space Crusade and Space Hulk 1st edition.
Glad Ninjon finally won one.

Raphael, da Vinci and Artist Opus like that Post. stippling kills every brush in a few hours
This was a fun video, you should do this every GD. Alex Dos santos did that as a 3d sculpt, 250-300 hours of work before he started painting

Definitely do. Having a high level painter walk me through these paint jobs and guiding my eye to the most important parts gave me so much more insight into the effort put in by the artists.
That spinning rifle barrel is so cool
GW should really have a "Golden Oldies" catergory for minis from like 2005 or earlier, or hand-scupted minis in the older style, now that they have brought back the Old World.

that Peter Turbo is fantastic, but the Space Hulk diorama is mind-blowing. The lighting, the posing, the spinning barrels on the assault cannon - absolute masterwork
I wonder what the Flemish Primitives would think about it.
and yet you can still understand the reflective nature of the winners model and just how OBSCENELY high this coopetition is getting!

Not really, the silver one was better but I agree that the slayer sword was so damn imaginative
even more so when I finally realized that he did not just take 2 of the same model and snipped a few parts off of the reflection. That reflection is completely scratch-built because it needs to be mirrored.
@@VenomEmi The silver one was excellent as well. I'm not sure what criteria the judges consider, but if creativity counts, the winner definitely deserved the gold. The silver winner was beautifully composed, but nothing about it felt like a new idea. The gold winner, however, accomplishes such an amazing visual feat that I think people will be still talking about it for years.
Perturabo was incredible, as a IV Legion fan that one made me happy!
Same I hope gw takes note.

8:00 I got really confused at this part, because I didn't think you could enter 2D art into Golden Demon.
Then you showed it from a different angle and my brain exploded.
It’s ridiculously good. I can’t believe it didn’t win anything.
@@DanT100it is about the judges. Then if the miniature is marketable. All of the entries and styles look ultra 2d and cartoons.
@@DanT100one issue with GDs, is its also marketting for GW. In the past, there have been results where even the painters didnt think their own entries should have won, but they were more marketable in the codexes/WD magazine
My favorite piece of the show has got to be the vampire. Actually executing the reflecting illusion is a whole other level of craft that I am floored by every time I look at it. Every little detail between the two halves that is mirrored or not are chosen so well to convey the scene, and to give a sense of the subject as a character and not just a miniature. An incredibly well-earned win for Alex. This is a piece we will be talking about for years.
I love that you noted that Space Hulk diorama. On a technical level it is stunning, and it perfectly portrays the scene. It is super rare to find work that portrays a dark space but also captures the light as well as this piece does. The detail in the modeling and composition is so good that it looks like it could (should) be the cover illustration for an edition of Space Hulk.
Fletcher's two T'au pieces both really strike me for how simple they seem, but how profoundly they impart a sense of space and being a simple, beautiful moment in time. Both pieces impress on a technical level, but also deliver a strong emotional / sensory impact. You can smell the arid grit and feel the sense of a lonely, quiet space in the hangar scene. I can hear the rushing water over the drone engines humming, and feel the damp in the air of the waterfall scene. Absolutely brilliant work.
It'd be really cool to do a video where you look at the golden daemon winners of yesteryear and go over how the discipline has evolved.
I've been toying with the idea of doing a "golden demon throughout history" vid!

I was at Adepticon this year, and saw all these minis in person. These images don't even begin to do them justice. Truly epic and breathtaking! There was also another mini display on the con floor; it had all the Crisis Protocol and Star Wars minis expertly painted. I would recommend looking for those as well; they're not Warhammer but they are just as good.

One of my favorite entries was done by eons of battle who entered a massive forge world titan
The space hulk terminators looks like a painting IMO. Just the colors and framing and poses feel like something you might see on the cover of a book in that old fantasy art style. It is just nostalgia and coolness boiled into one. Like, technically the vampire one is better, but god the vibes on the silver place are just pure warhammer 40k to me.
I kept having to remind myself that there was no CGI or digital editing done when I was looking at that space hulk diorama entry. That and the custom pete-turbo are some of the coolest things I have ever seen. Not just art either, but like, the coolest _anything_ I have ever seen.
As a Blood Angels player and a very very very beginner painter Benjamin Kantor's diorama was a feast for the eyes!
Every one of those were superb. The Tau drone waterfall is especially beautiful.
The jungle diorama for the lizard warband was my clear favourite, but I have to say the Perturabo is a close second!

You're an amazing painter displaying the best that painters can offer... to me this is a no brainer. Fantastic video! Great to get a bit of insight through you. Being able to focus our attention to what exactly makes an entry such a big deal!
OMG, that Vampire reflection is incredible. After seeing the Space Hulk diorama I couldn't imagine something beating it but... yep. The ability to create such a perfect mirror image with all those small details is beyond anything I have ever seen painted.
it was hard for me to believe, while i think the space hulk was painted better. the idea, concept, and difficulty of the winner cannot be overlooked
real incredible inspiration. the terminator diorama was a gorgeous exploration of fixed lighting in a diorama

I think my favorite was the Peter Turbo entry in Horus Heresy, something about all the details and sculpting just really drew my gaze... and that Space Hulk diorama with the Terminators and Genestealers was insanely breathtaking.
I asked Alex and he told me he scanned and printed the model to mirror it, removed he head and hands because.. vampires ofc this is personally my favorite entry ive ever seen in golden demon even without the "reflection"
I didn’t see Fletcher’s tau drone mini diorama and sorely wish it had been featured in the golden demon article(assuming I’m not just a goober and glossed over it :p). The shading in the water with the OSL in the background is absolutely gorgeous. And the placement of the drones really makes it feel like both a dynamic piece as well as a snapshot in time.
Hey thanks for the lovely comment! It didn't achieve what I wanted with it in the UK GD last year but I'm so happy people seem to like it.

I know it's unrelated to this video, but... thank you for the AMAZING color selection for your ProAcryl artist series. They fill large gaps in their line, and are fabulous for those of us that like to paint really colorful, flashy minis. You better be prepping a video showing us some amazing vaporwave monstrosity with the dark turquoise and hot pink.
I'm definitely going to making a video about unlocking all the potential in the colours! I wanna wait til they get released though!

On a side note, mirrors were crafted using silver (real process back in the time), and that is why it was believed vampires had no reflections 😋

The Green Knight is my favorite, it tells a subtle implied story that this was Gilles le Breton before he became the Green Knight, maybe in his early days as a Knight errant, just a young man drawn to the enchanted forests
All of these painters are unbelievable. Ben Kantors Terminator scene with its double OSL effect and action pose is mind blowing!
Seeing everyone's work in person is always an absolute highlight for me, so inspiring. The community is filled with the most imaginative and hard working people, truly!

My favorite was the slayer sword winner, closely followed by the the Bretonnian knight that got Silver in the Old World category.
A very subtle but absolutely lovely touch to the silver winning entry for the duel/diorama is the assault cannon being made top look in motion by the use of a tube and motion blur painted on! The level that these entries are operating on is insane!

Creatively, the slayer sword winner is top-tier, but nothing in GD this year can compete with Clayton's duel. Overall, I don't think the quality was as high as previous GD over the last few years, but still some amazing entries. And lots of creativity, which is nice to see.

These don’t even look like 3d minis they look like a painting on canvas. They look absolutely perfect in 1d so I can only begin to imagine how insanely fantastic they are seeing the real deal in person.

I just back into miniature painting and have been enjoying the new journey. These artist are absolutely incredible. The Space Marine diorama with the red and green lighting was mind blowing.
Amory is such a good and fun painter, often taking top in our local painting contests. It's really great that hes getting recognition for this!
That winning mini of the vampire actually has a slight emotional impact on me. "Below the surface" shedding a truth at what he truly is.

I really like this. I looked up all the winners on Monday but it's nice to hear another perspective.
I am really glad I went and saw a bunch of other people's work and was able to get feedback on how I can improve. Definitely excited for what is to come on the hobby and trying different scales and model types to get me out of the comfort zone and challenging me to do better is exciting

The Perturabo is the greatest mini i have every seen....I'm definitely an Iron Warriors fan but damn. That mini is perfect. The pose is awesome. The coloring is iron but with depth. Absolutely the coolest!!!!

You are very-entertaining and comical... and this gives us more material to consume in-between your videos that require so-much time to set-up. Much respect.
Perhaps, you could do a video on the Primarchs and their daddee-issuezz... and which ones you could "fix"... as a woman who likes these types of deeply-flawed demi-godz.
I loved this video as I have always loved seeing the Golden Demon winners and contestants please do this again next year.
Its always hard to find good high resolution images so if you manage to get that that's a great bonus!
Interesting how these days there's a lot of 'texture' painted into the shading. I feel its because model surfaces nowadays are so perfect with the smooth plastic. In the olden days of my yuf there was already some texture as the tin/lead had that slight un-eveness and bumpy texture. That added to the personality and organic feel that's a bit lost in modern minis. And that's why painters are having to add texture consciously or not.

Insane entries this year, and it just gets crazier every year. Really enjoyed the video.
Please do this again, it's really nice to see your take on the painting. I have been gawking at the SS winner all day and even went to his Instagram to find that he's spent basically an entire year on it. The storytelling is fantastic and every little thing just adds to it.
These all look incredible! My favourite has to be the Space Hulk diorama. I love a bit of OSL, and the background is so Giger-esqe it works perfectly!
