Sorry to say that, but none of them are worth their prices in my opinion. None of them are even close to your level of painting. You can see a lot of shortcuts, poorly painted areas etc. None of them is worth their price.
Have to say, as a commission artist. It's so refreshing to see a content creator actually doing a regular artist and rate commission rather than just Fivver. Because that site skews the value in such weird ways with competitive it is.
This is honestly the most realistic price to result I've seen so far. Compared to my own work and the commissions I and my friends have had done.
You do get what you pay for, commissions will always be slightly off from your dream, and the artist has to charge enough to make it worth their while.
That's the unfortunate reality that makes commission such a hard sell to so many.
But keeping your expectations realistic really makes the whole process more enjoyable. And hopefully videos like this will help people to do that.
I have to disagree. The quality here is terrible, especially for display level.
@@michakonwicki6781 but for $150-200 thats 20 hours maximum working for around or less than $10ph, I'm not the fastest painter in the world, but my display pieces are 20 hours at the absolute fastest, usually approaching the 30-50 mark. Golden Demon quality display pieces take upwards of 100+ hours.
You get what you pay for, and what you are paying for essentially is someones time and materials, for the price paid here, they are not terrible.

That said in some ways it does make the video more helpful. As a reminder and advocate for consumers to do their due research in a studio before hiring them.
Speaking as someone who experienced buyers remorse from other studios before forming my own.
If i had seen this video before then i likely would have demanded better photos from he studio i used.
How much you pay is often as impactful as who you pay it to.

Pretty impressed by the quality of the army painting stuff. Not so much when it comes to the display pieces, except for the last one. That one is great and makes sense that you would keep it, rather than sell it.

interesting video, I always explain this topic to my students as it usually creates a lot of discomfort to talk about money. The most important thing is to sell something for a price that you feel comfortable with, it is fair for you, because in Spain the average salary is different from other countries in Europe or the United States, for example. 😀
Not only selling something at a price we are comfortable with, but also at a price that's sustainable.
If we consistently undersell our projects or take on unsuited projects for our skill level, it's often going to be a struggle making ends meet regardless of our field of work.
Eg. consistently selling projects at 80% of what they are actually worth essentially means we have to work 20% extra for the same amount of compensation.
That situation sucks, especially in a field where consistently getting work can be a challenge (ex. often within creative arts as these are often "like to haves" rather than "must haves" compared to being a carpentry or other essential crafts)
How do they do that for this low amount of money. If they charge you 15$ then they have only 20-30 minutes to spent on the model including coming up with the color schemes and including the basing part. This is crazy. They clearly have years of experience I don't think they should be working at or below minimum wage. I mean, they do have to pay taxes and for all the paints and brushes and texture paints etc.

To me the piece that really didn't look worth the price is the first 155$ fantasy one. In places the mixing is smooth, but in others it isn't (like on the face); the edge highlighting is too wide and inconsistent in it's width in general; and most importantly: there is NO LINING whatsoever! How is that supposed to be worth 155$, when an article of clothing instantly transitions into skin and then into something else!? Boggles the mind, honestly.

Been painting for a few years now but I still reserve myself from doing commission painting cause I feel I won't be as good as some of the pieces I've seen you and others have done, especially the metallics still not good enough.
the display models are waaaaaay too expensive for what you got. only the last one is a good one
I paint my orks with different skin tones, keeping everything within the same color wheel quadrant, but then moving about for different tones and variations so for my army, goblins ranging from desaturated to day glow green and squigs from red to yellow, would encorporate well. I like having that little bit of variety to just make it look more interesting and keep everything from looking like clones. That said I go about it way faster. Random base color, random wash, random dry brush from within my color pallet.

That first 15 dollar mini was undercharging thats a 30-40 dollar job
To be honest I'm surprised. Well below the standard of what I would expect with exception to the last miniature. When similar things have been done by squidmar I was always surprised by the level of the painters (in a positive way)
Fiver confuses things somewhat because the competition in the platform often causes people to massively undercharge. Also I feel like it being Squidmar may have influenced the minis he has recived.
Really just highlights the need to examine an artists work before you spend money with them.
It's easy to feel that a paint job is poor when put next to amazing one's like zumitko's own. But if the artist is an army painter suddenly being asked for display or vice versa, on a weeks timeline. It can massively affect the results.
If you got a commission, on FIverr, which is super competitive so people undercharge, and saw it was from Squidmar who is one of the largest hobby channels around, lets be honest, cost x time ratio is getting thrown totally out of the window and you are going to do your best knowing its going to get hundreds of thousands of eyeballs on it.
I was always aghast at the Games Workshop painting tutorials on the amount of paints they would use on that one model. When you totalled up the cost. It was over £200. Madness

Commission painting always seems to spark a debate. A lot of good points in the comments have already been made by other commission painters, and I may as well put in my two cents.
There are so many variables that affect the price and the outcome of a commission. It can be incredibly difficult to balance one's own investment of time and desired quality with seeing a fair payout. While I can empathize with the feeling that someones expectations were not met, they are paying the artist for their time and skilled labor, and having your miniatures painted by someone else is a luxury. Yes, some artists may overcharge for their perceived skill level, but the results will often be subjective, and no two commissions, whether it be the artist who did it or the subject itself, will ever be the same. Comparing artists in a vacuum is a difficult thing to do because everyone has a different idea of what tabletop or display quality means, and what that might be worth charging for.
Both client and artist need to communicate clearly with each other and manage expectations. I personally try to put love and effort into every job that I do, but the process will never be an exact science. If you want your minis painted, find an artist you trust and love, and a quality level/price point that works within your budget.
A couple of thoughts as a full time commission painter (doublesixminis for the shameless plug!) To be honest I wouldn't take a commission for a single model at 15€ or probably even 40€. Minimum wage where I live is 11€ per hour net and I honestly want to be earning more than minimum wage! The time taken even just to do a quote or go and post the model is not worth it for such a low price. The other thing to bear in mind is that depending on your country, that minimum wage might be much lower. Some people can earn 150€ and it can be enough for the week, others are looking at that (or more) for a daily rate.

@@theatrotexnodiastasitexnod3953 I live in France. Warhammer is pretty huge in Europe and America, there's lots of people painting for a living. How much they really earn is another story but it's possible.

@@j1g2w3 can you explain to me why do people bother with minis? what if they don't buy and paint it? it's not even a toy for the kids it stands on the shelf somewhere and does nothing. it's not even a decoration. i'm asking this because i do 3d modelling and want to find out if it's worth to invest time in modelling and 3d printing for clients. i just don't get it why would anyone pay for 3d printing and painting a mini. for what?
@@al-oh8fq I'd say there are several different reasons, but can be divided into two broad categories.
Firstly is the gamers, people who purely want to play, either tournament or casual, but don't have the patience, the time or the skill to paint and army. A 2000 point Warhammer army can be 50+ models so it's quite the undertaking. There are also gamers who want the leader of their army to be better painted than they're capable of, or they want to play smaller sized games like DnD, so it's less expensive than a full army.
The other much smaller niche, but still a very important one, is collectors. Display models are usually busts or larger scale models (54mm scale, 75mm, or even bigger. Here we definitely are talking about artwork which can go for hundreds of €$£ per piece. There are also people who commission armies of gaming models with little intention of playing, but they're pretty rare.
If you're interested in 3d modeling and printing I'd check out myminifactory and see what kind of things are popular on there. Depending on your local regulations you can either let your customers provide you with STLs that you print (which is a grey area legally) or you can potentially buy the rights to print and sell other people's designs to supplement your own catalogue.
Gamers especially like conversion bits that they can add to their models to customise them, or "proxy" models that look suspiciously like Games Workshop's models but are much cheaper and just different enough to be legally distinct.
Painting is also a hobby in itself so if you're designing interesting models or busts, some people may be interested purely for the artistic process of painting and displaying them

I always try to get people to consider the amount of time required to do a commission. Where I live, the minimum wage is $15. So for $40 you're looking at two hours of minimum wage plus materials. Realistically commission painting is skilled labor, so if you're a professional you should be charging at least $30 an hour. Yes, it is a lot of money to get a miniature professionally painted, but it's a luxury. Nobody needs a professionally painted miniature. So from my perspective $40 is extremely fair for the table ready miniature.
Ihave 3 levels of paint that I offer: Battle, Parade, and Showcase. I hadn't really charged a lot, mostly because getting started, you want to get customers, but I slowly changed my prices to reflect the level of work I was putting into each piece. Some people have tried to argue price, but I've also had plenty who have seen my work and agreed without argument. It's mostly up to what people want to play, but I have found that more people in the US want to argue about the price than anyone from anywhere else.
Painting is a skill, and that makes you skilled labor. Charge appropriately.
Well, something I realised is that I will never make a living of this...the 15$ paint job is 100 times better than my best job up to date....
For commission work at an army-level paint, it's not about skill, it's about speed. You have to make it worth your time, so you have to know what you can do to make something look good in as little time as possible. That means cutting corners on everything that we spend time on that doesn't add a ton of value, i.e. multiple layers. One base coat, one thin layer or glaze, edge highlight, ship it. Just painting that over and over again until you get used to exactly how to do it to get the most out of your time.
I think they definitely undersold themselves. A customer and the commenters can call "rip-off" and buying it is on them, but you can't do anything about underselling. And think it's important to realize none of them turned out bad.

I'd feel pretty ripped off if I received those display miniatures after paying $150. They were all quite bad with the exception of the last one. I think the $40 yellow Squig hopper is the best and I like it even more than the final $200 piece in terms of value.

I think Clown Fiesta was very well done technically. The color choices obviously leave something to be desired, but I also feel like that was probably the point. Typically you'd discuss color choices like that with someone, but I have a feeling they were kinda just told to do whatever and well, we got "Whatever", that's for sure.
Eh. I make 59$ an hour and spend about 4-6 hours painting a mini. I wouldn’t sell my painted stuff but I get the price point, time is valuable.

Gorgeous but none of these are worth the money imo. Doing it yourself out of a labor of love is one thing but I'd never pay someone to paint a mini. Even the low end isn't a good deal

What this shows me is that a lot of painters should not be offering display quality paint jobs. I wouldn't be happy with any of those display pieces.
I would feel kind of insulted if I recieved that first display miniature. It seems really messy, every part of it blends together and it has no real shading on the armor.
Given that the painters knew they would be featured in a CZcams Video really makes the validity questionable.. But then again. Some of them was really not great. That really surprised me. Especialy the first Show Piece... that was super bland and down right bad imo

Sorry, I ignored this video initially because I thought it would be one of those low effort fiver videos, made just to get boosted by the algorithm.
Mini painting has gotten a high bar of standards, in no small part due to instagram and youtube, so people's expectations are high.
"Tabletop standard" is a very muddy term. Actual 'standard' is very low, it's '3 color minimum' and 'painted by a kid at a kitchen table' low. The first models are well above tabletop standard (even if some of the highlights on the first one are a bit dodgy, should've cleaned up that cloak).
I get lip from a friend over some of my work (that I do for free) not because he's an ass or anything, but because he looks at it and starts mentally optimizing and comparing to what he's seen.
We're all a little dumb like that, if it takes 5 seconds more to microwave your food than it did the last time then your body starts stressing over it, it's literally telling you something is off and that you have to take notice.
Frankly speaking, all painting was performed rough and not worth the prize it took.
The last model, probably, has a little better quality than the other ones, but still it's level of 50-100(max)$ costs painting. I don't want to offend painters, I don't know the reasons why they have painted those models in so poor quality, but if it was my order, I'd be really disappointed.
The only person who is allowed to spoil my figurines - it's me, but at least I'll do it for free (except of the price of the model)!

Buzzfeed has been doing this format for ages and to be honest I was more influenced by that style 😁also specifically didn't use Fiverr because of that, but if I do in the future, I will make sure to mention the big man 👌

Squidmar didn't invent the concept of going to Fiverr/commission painters, its a youtube staple at this point seen in multiple different hobbies and professions.
If these display pieces are really worth 200 dollars, then your models should cost 1000. But anyway, I think you made small mistake and presented prices in dollars instead of Leus.
So does you not letting the people know who you are skew the entire thing? You don't think the painters are going to spend a bit more time on your commissions than other randoms? Knowing their product is going to be showcased on a youtube channel a bunch of people watch? No way I send a model in for the same price you did and get the same quality back.
