dumb question but I noticed you have a VERY smooth color transition from the top of the thigh color to the darker sides of the thigh and I understand using a lighter paint on the top of the thigh but how do you smooth this transition out? I've done the same thing or tried it and my colors SHARPLY contrast one another and you can see the color difference lines very easily even when its similar colors next to one another, it doesn't look like you just used a lighter but similar color, you somehow smoothed it out as it went from one color to another and didn't have a sharp edge line between them, is there a way to do this or am I just bad at painting?

it works the other way around too. im mostly a digital artist, but ive been getting into minis bc i felt ive grown wayyy too reliant on zooming in in my art as of late, which made my irl sketches really imprecise. plus, seeing 3d for a change does help you not forget how shadows work

I was [am] a traditional oil painter LONG before I began to paint miniatures. I can tell you that I had an IMMEDIATE ability to produces painted mini's that LOOKED like oil paintings. I surprised my own self actually, but I guess it all makes sense. I just know what to do, and how to get the 'look' I'm after. ALL of my mini's look nearly photo-realistic. In fact, the only thing I initially needed time to get used to, was how small the brushes needed to be, alas, VERY small as it turns out. I build my colors through direct blending ON the model, and 'glazes'. Producing colors through glazing, produces results on par with the Masters. I had always preferred the Dutch method, and thus I begin by painting my entire mini in grey scale....like Vermeer did, for instance. THEN, after the mono-chromatic paintjob it done, I begin building color through transparent, thin, glazes. Since the 'values' are already fully established via the initial mono-chromatic phase...the color phase turns out exceedingly rich and very very realistic. I'm jut now beginning to scratch build my mini's...which is a whole different skill, but quite fun. Also, using a monocle or min. 2.5x magnifying visor makes a WORLD of difference in the detail you can ultimately achieve with scratch building your figures. Sometimes I 'buy' the heads already done and ready to go, also, sometimes I buy 'hands' already ready to go, and then I build the rest of the figure from scratch, including all clothes, equipment, etc.. Scratch building with a 3d pen and micro diamond and sanding bits allows you to achieve super fine details without having to spend so much time like it does when trying to scratch build with epoxy putty...which is too time consuming. 3d pen scratch building figures is really, really easy to do once you get the initial 'feel' for the heat setting on the pen AS WELL AS the heat settings on your 'smoothing' heat element...which is just a modified electronic soldering iron with bits you can easily customize yourself via grinding whatever shape and size you think you might need or want to use.

Could try water color pencils. They act like a color pencil when dry, but when wet cover more like paint. Block in an area while wet then shade with another color or darker shade and lightly blend with a bit of moisture and erase mistakes with water. The only drawback is needing a clear spray coat to set the paint permanently

If it appeals to you, you have some figurines and the interest, it may be simpler than it seems to achieve a good result.
One simple step at a time, like even painting one color per week, like one time the skin, one time the red cape on a figurine or a group of figurines...
In only two steps for each color, you may reach a very good rendering.
Just in case you would like to do it...

I've watched every single video you've made and I think this is my favorite. Great work editing and it's really helpful! Thank you!

Have you ever tried painting a miniature with inverted colors? Darker on the edges and brighter in the recesses? I'm curious to see how it would look.
