Fake acc replying to my comment?
I love how you planned to paint 20 models at 1 hour per model as per the tutorial in one afternoon
r/iamverysmart
A plan? A plan?!? Nobody said /anything/ about thinking when I got into this hobby!
More relatable words never existed
Just wing it and you'll be fine. You'll plan more as the years go by
Lolll
Same lol
planning went so far as picking the main colors and a name.
I started painting miniatures in the late 80s early 90s. Back then everyone was super secretive about how to paint, and straight out refused to share knowledge (it was a pay your dues mentality). Stuff that has taken me years to figure out you can now pick up in a few you tube videos. I think I have learned more in the past few years than in an earlier lifetime lol. Thank you guys so much for this. It has been great to see this change in the gaming world.
Once painted a Skaven army of over 500 models back in the days of warhammer fantasy. And ever since have been completely burned out with army painting. Having restarted the hobby with the new 40k edition...it's been a tedious process...
But hey seeing the finished units on the table is awesome! And having other players comment on them is the best kind of motivation! So hang in there and support each others progress and process!
My best advice for painting things that take a long time whether it be a large model or tons of individual ones is put something on that progresses like a book or a show anime, even a long playlist of your favorite artists etc. I find that when things progress it works extremely well as you see your progression with the progression of what you are watching. If you watch a movie or a video and it ends… you are still stuck painting so you have to then watch something else that will eventually “end”. For example I watched all 8 Harry Potters once and it was satisfying that when I finished all my painting I got to watch the end and was happy that the plot evolved as did my army. That’s my advise at least cheers!
12:59 Phrasing! :D
Also just wanna say great sponsor. Usually they arent even related to content but ofc we are here for painting tips.
Great! Success to you Kraken.
Alright. First 60 seconds alone warranted a sub.
Models look great and really like your color choices. For me, the first few units always take the longest because that's when I'm finding out what ideas I had that work and which ones don't
I hate painting armies. I'm here for Zumikito's flawless mini-painting themed innuendos. Well played, sir.
I still get a chuckle out of your deadpan
"I F***ed up"
in that space marine video. I watch it from time to time while im painting just because its entertaining.
I've been painting armies for 30 years and typically paint 40 man units at a time. What I find helpful in doing so, is sorting the minis basic body shapes into groups and paint those batches. Each subsequent mini goes quicker as you learn where the details are on the mini, and then correct/touch up the whole batch at the end- again sorting into common mistakes needing to be corrected. It definitely helps power through an army this way!
I really hate this approach. For me i pick a unit of 5 and paint one at a time, take a couple of hours each. I get 100000x more enjoyment if a paint one mini at a time then do the same thing over and over
For sure and ive learnt, when you know a paint scheme its sooo much easier.
I went in a different direction: I just started playing skirmish games instead. I can spend as much time on a model as I want. I do not have to paint the same model 30+ times (or 100+ times in the case of my friends soul blight army) and I do not hate my hobby. Pretty good if you ask me.
The way i deal with batch painting is I'll batch paint all the standard troops and save the sergeants, banner bearers or characters as a "treat" between batches
Zumikito talking about rimming always puts a smile on my face.
I go through phases of "inspiration"... usually with a new set I'm super excited and with paint as much as I can for 2-3 days straight... then it will slow down and I'll pick away at what remains.
Love the color concept and how you broke it down to a timely and do able approach, rather than doing a marathon of getting lost in too many details only you will know about!
Painting entire armys is really painful, but once done can be so satisfying.
I've always wanted to paint my veteran guardsmen kill team like they appear on the box, with the orange light being reflected off them, and this effect looks just like that! I'm so excited to try this out.
Hooray!!! This video was made for me!!!
Hasn't in fact finished a single mini, maybe in another life
my opinion is that with the damn prices they ask for plastic figures , it should come pre painted ....
A test model is absolutely vital. Whether you follow a tutorial or not. After the 1st batch of models you will likely modify the process for the next, to make it more efficient.
If I hated army painting I'd commission it out.
Personally, when painting an army, i NEVER finish them all to start off with, i get the base 3 colors on there, then come back slowly over time and work on finishing them how i want them to be finished with better shading and everything. You can spend days if not weeks on a single model, if you're playing with them, its so much nicer to see some kind of color on them. Even if its just a nice airbrush, with a few base colors that can be highlighted. It'll make you feel like you're accomplishing something.
Dude this video is a godsend. They are incredibly atmospheric!
Slick method and great advice!
Love your work. These Colorful Kraken book are going to be fantastic. My order is in!
I love those minis!
These look fantastic 👏
Your suffering shows and it makes the video very enjoyable!! Can relate
This is such a great channel, always makes me laugh, but also great painting tips
Absolutely agree that base coating is THE most draining part of the hobby
That effect looks really cool, especially with a team of minis
I was hoping to meet you at Spiel23 this weekend, since the Artis Opus guys said you were planning to come. Sadly, it didn't work out, so I have to do it this way:
Thank you very much for your amazing videos and the exact right amount of humour to make every single one loads of fun to watch. ❤
This is funny to me cause I LOVE army painting and regularly paint in batches of 10 to 15 models at a time. I think that you and many other mini painting youtubers are display painters trying to benefit from the much more numerous tabletop and casual standard painters out there.
Great advice
I don't get as much enjoyment from painting as I do from playing with an all painted army , so my batches are huge as I just start painting when the army is all assembled and I play fantasy !
Cool as always.
Batch/speed painting is all about the compromises you're willing to make to paint stuff faster, and nailing down the steps before you get stuck in. This generally requires a bunch of planning. For example, Zumikito has ONE color of brown he tints with a variety of washes. But he could have airbrushed the whole mini brown - which would probably require painting the parts to be metallic in black and some touch up afterwards, but likely would have been faster than painting 70% of the model brown with a brush. But maybe not! The only way to be sure is to do test models. A couple of hours at the start can save you dozens of hours once you get stuck in. A bottle of paint stripper can turn your failed efforts back into grey plastic in very little time, so there's no reason to not experiment.
Motivation wise, I find breaking stuff into chunks to be helpful. A batch of 20 minis is a huge batch! But you might be able to do 5 minis in a single evening. That way you're not stuck doing the same color for 3 hours in a row before moving to the next color for the next three hours.
I hope your happy knowing that some poor innocent fellow (me) finally googled that term for the rims you describe so vaguely.
Although I will admit it is good to know…
Really awesome stuff, thank you :)
Amazing
That's soft. Try what I did with 120 clanrats all at the same time, no small batches, just all in one go. Well, for some of the main colors I did some batches of everything between 6-20, but after that with all the chips, scratches, claws/teeth, and eyes (done with red contrast all over and around each eye, then painting the eye ball white, then doing a fluo orange over it all) in batches of 120 for each step is a killer.... It was hard to see the end sometimes, but MAN was it satisfying when they were all done!! :D
Anyway, great vid, they look awesome!! I kinda wanna try to do this style for 1-2 armies in the future :P
One tip I learned from batch painting the Leviathan tyranids: if you make your 'reward' a glass of wine, theres no problem in getting that messy effect.
Also I live the two tone style and tried your earlier video that was more Cursed City style.... But my biggest queation: wtf is causing all this glow from the ground?!?
I think motivation management is the most important part of army painting. For me painting more than two miniatures at once is tiring. And as you mentioned you have the satisfaction of a fully painted miniature much more often.
Great video, lots of good tips, as I don't play I just love to do the painting. Recently challenged myself to paint a ten figure set at once (I usually just do 1-2 figures at a time) from a box , I did five for the display case and the remaining five I turned into a diorama, the miniatures were Warhammer Nighthaunt Chainrasps and I must admit it was fun to see how far I've come from just starting three years ago . I also prefer to have a podcast playing in the background then switch to music when the episode I was listening to ends, dies make the time fly.
💯 true! Knowing a paint scheme is sooo much easier. Takes out lots of guess work or trial and error.
Nothing worse then not liking how something turns out. I find its less about my airbrush and brush skill but more the paint choice that turns me off.
LORDS ARE REWARDS! That's how I approach my batch/ army painting when I paint. For example my Stormcasts - when I get a box with units and a lord, the Lord goes last.
working on the Leviathan box and I decided to make Dark Angels. Bought Lion El'Jonson as a reward model for when I'm done. Currently going back and forth on SM and 'Nids to keep myself interested.
Currently at a similar stage. But for me my units are 60% primer spray can so that makes everything faster.
Same. I did the lion 5th though 😊
That rimming joke tho!
i don't even know if they knew it was a joke, but i had a very soft chuckle out of it lol
It took 17+ hours to do All the leather belts, pouches and straps on 200 1 inch tall ww1 soldiers. I did it in 2 goes over two days. 😮
Zumikito: "I really don't enjoy army painting"
Me: "He really enjoys the magenta"
Tho i have to admit it they look very good, I really need to get myself some magenta. D:
I mostly love painting my armies… yeah, the nameless grunts (that are pretty much identical) get a bit boring, but I’ll paint a few as practice for named characters, then do a few more, ect.
I'm with you there. Seeing a full painted army beats one display figure anytime for me. It's a complete different set of skills.
skvelé video ako vždy !
I've purchased so many models with a plan to paint them.
I've painted a grand total of 1 space marine and 1 tyranid warrior so far in about a month.
But it took a long time trying to friend the right colors until I was happy with them. Hoping that the rest of the armies will go by fairly quick now that I have a "plan"
When I started 40k in 2nd Edition(!), I painted one of the starter box Goff orks in one month. I used enamel paints and well, it turned out very well, if a bit flat because what is shading?
Now I painted the Termagants from the Leviathan box... all 20 of them in one batch because I knew if I only do 10, I will never touch the other 10 because I will be sick of it. Yes, I hated myself for that decision, but what I hate more is having halfway painted minis so I pulled through.
Followed by 11 Neurogaunts, who were surprisingly fun to paint! I love these little critters!
can you do a video on painting with a limited set of colors
I’d love to only spend 2-3 hours per mini. I’m more of the 4-10 hours kind of painter. These look excellent. I may try this series out for a 12 model group. Thanks!
Well, yesterday I was finishing 6 (5 since gotta do OSL for Sergeant) Veteran Guardsmen for 5 hours and I was only doing metallic highlights, minor fixes, decals and varnishing. Would kill to be able to paint 20 models in 5 hours XD
Army painting is a soul destroyer and it is the main reason I moved away from standard-size games to skirmish games. A tip I found very useful is: you dont need to paint every single details! Concentrate on what is impactful.
A second tip is to use contrast paints (no matter of brand) as much as possible... They changed my way of painting (35 years of experience).
Painting my cadians use to be so easy until the range refresh added a whole bunch of new details to paint. Not everyone needs a backpack and that much stuff on them, lol.
Very nice 😀 I love you're comments ❤ Which metalic colors have you used?
I just finished 60 cadians… no speedpaints… bases, transfers and weathering took me 3 months
nice job :)
i still remember the Enamel video, omg did it hurt a lot... BUt yeah, in this video, you`re right, Structure is key, batches of 5-10 are perfect for small models, and if you have a bigger one, just do that one, vehicles as in tanks, can be done all together for the bases, but when the time comes for blending and shades, and texture, do them one at a time. Just finished 3 Rhinos of the Death Guard in 2 days, that means 2 sittings of 5 hours each. I wasnt fast, but i had my share of fun.
You should make a Loyalist Fulgrim for the sons of the Phoenix. Have it be Clone Grim
I did 10 assembly line style and never again. 5 max for me, and I’m doing the next squad one at a time
NGL, also a serious fan of rimming 😎
I love Rimming
I stick to squads of 5, and keep all other minis out of sight, so i can focus on what's on the table. Factory method is fastest way, especially when you've got over 100 primed minis to finish
My opinion. Painting with oils, quickpaints and inks on preshade is more quickly. At the end just do highlights and its done. on metal just use stipling. Nice result for quick painting. AND, if you do some weathering...
If you're painting for gaming this is da wai. If you go bold with the highlights they look great from a couple of feet away and since that's how you spend the most time looking at them... And you always have the option of going crazy on them for characters etc
Curious what cabinets you show with your mini's in them.
Zumikito conveniently forgetting the Squig Knights he painted to parade standard with NMM and OSL Xp
I think some is too you are recording for youtube, so that'll slow everything down as you do camera stuff.
you lucky i want to play again. but my eye sight and not having steady hands i can not paint or build mini. i started when 1ed and 2ed came out. so did not need to build but could paint somewhat.
Just batch painted a gloomspite army with 80-100 minis every goblin has free hand on the hoods , I said never again then tyranids got a vamp up lol I feel your pain , it’s a different mentality
ok I have a silly newb question. I just received a box of miniatures and have watched many painting videos. The question is: why not prime and base coat them while they are still on the sprue?
same people do that, but if you don't do anything with the plastic beforehand, you'll have to remove some moldlines and plastic attachements and along with them scratch off some paint. If you don't mind mold lines or some paint being scratched off, sure!
Do they have a tutorial in that book that’ll help me not dip my beard into my wet pallet? All jokes aside, never had a beard length this long before. How do you do it Zumikito?
Hey can anyone tell me will you be able to buy these books in June 2024 when they come out or do you have to do the pledge thingy now?
How do you paint with those frayed hairs? I mean the results speak for themselves but still!
Song @5:30?
Thos books look great might check em out.
I have 140 death korp of krieg to get done. I got distracted by some killteams and my back log filled up…
This is the most relatable thing ive seen all week
I love building and not so good at painting…going to spray paint with two colors randomly and just play. I figure if risk games have one solid color armies the least I can do is 2 colors and then maybe use a brush on weapons for that extra detail lol 😂
@Zumitkito Have you seen the new Army Painter Fanatic series? I would love to hear your input on them given you are not a fan of Army Painter and their new line looks *insane
Aaand this pops up while I'm doing a batch of 10 as my first batch.... I know what you mean. My backs killing me. But my black angels doe
First time I painted models, it was 14 Stormtroopers for legion.
Did each one individually start to finish, nothing in batches.
Despite them literally being just black and white, for some reason I primed them grey instead of white.
Man, I hated it
If you want a primer, try Rust-Oleum Ultra Matte white. I'm actually loving how it makes everything look
Building and priming are the only parts I enjoy. I absolutely HATE painting and would be perfectly happy with all prepaints... I wanna play and painting is the worst part of the hobby followed closely by people who are shitty when they think they are losing and people who dont shower.
Although this looks great, it's not a good way to paint armies fast. Airbrush and OSL will get you the result you want faster although more messy. Considering the time you spend in applying the OSL with the brush, that time might as well have been spent applying highlights and washes like any normal method. Contrast paint is also a massive boost in speed.
too bad that campaign wont offer a PDF. Its super expensive to begin with and the shipping is insane which makes it not worthwhile although they look like great books
I actually find batch painting relaxing.
You only have to figure out the colors etc. once and then it just proceeds automatically.
Whereas painting several different models at the same time is tiring.
so something I do want to state for this aswell KEEP YOUR SCHEMES SIMPLE as my god you can go very overboard very fast
😂 Flashbacks from metallics!
Ah, yes. Rimming. Who doesn't like some proper rimming... of miniature bases
can someone tell me what that white bookshelf in the beginning is called? I wanna store my minis like that!
The system is called Kallax from Ikea - you need to buy the shelf itself and glass inserts on top
Please help, I want to find mephiston red equivalent from different brand since in my area it's all gone please help!!!
I'm actually quite suprised they didn't ask you to write for the book, they seem to have asked every other youtuber
4:21
From sitting down for so long right?
Right???
Man what a fantastic tutorial and such a cool look! I'm really liking thi- Aaaaaand it requires an airbrush. Once again my poor ass/tiny room is cut out of this style. Bleh.
Bro aint nobody got time for that,we need to get faster
Is it better to do a step for every mini or finish a mini and then move on to another one?
Former for efficiency and latter to stay motivated
@@Zumikito I see. I just got into warhammer and got an army together before I painted it. And I even had a box or two primed before the rest came in
Do both, select how many different types you have and choose one of each. Paint it from start to finish then taje a batch of five and repeat each step on the five, so you have s finished batch of five in the end. Then take the bext batch and repeat
The amount of dirty jokes in this video is chefs kiss
I paint ASOIAF for the miniatures game. Average unit size is 12 models ,so usually paint 12 minis at a time. I actually enjoy the painting & playing is a little more gratifying with the units I've painted.
I've watched several of your videos and they're always fun & helpful.
Keep up the great content.
Zumikito making mistakes so I can make them too :)
