I always knew I SHOULD wet m brush and thin m paints, but I was always wondering why veteran painters always had a damn rainbow on their hands! The amount I can learn abt my mixture just by doing this is amazing!

Every time I try painting, it ends up blotchy on a coat, I never see that in videos , (I saw one )
The blotchy coats would be good to see , so people not go , "oh my paint is bad"

Agreed. I first painted over 40 years ago then stopped for a long while. The quality of paints have improved so much and techniques moved on or developed a lot in the interim. The fundamental principles are the same, but it's still more like relearning than refreshing. Additionally some of the language has developed with new definitions for older methods.
Tip i received, get plastic spoons, prime the spoons, use spoons to test paints on, you get an accurate example of what you will get on the model whereas skin can react differently

I dabbled in miniature painting 40 years ago when I was in my early teens, D&D was the thing, and the only fantasy miniatures you could get were those die cast metal figures with a million pour defects! LOL. At the time I thought I'd discovered the holy grail when I figured out "dry brushing". And of course there were only oil based enamel paints from Testors in those little glass rectangular jars. I achieved some decent results back then (for the era) but I'm completely awed by the techniques and level of detail you are bringing out with acrylics! So impressed that I recently went out and bought my first set of Warhammer models to go with the bucket of inspiration you've given me! Thank you for all the high quality content!
It never hurts to watch videos like this one, because who knows? You may realize that you were doing something wrong and teach yourself the right way in the interest of improvement. Clear and concise as usual, well done!
Yeah, I'm likely guilty of pushing drying paint without realising it. TBH I haven't had lumpy minis since I was a kid and finally listened to the advice to thin my paints though, so probably OK.
My friend iv been painting since I was a kid and I had to learn with a codex hahah a friend > My friends never painted there mini's for the most part. Not me ! I played the Black Albume over and over agian painting away. CZcams helps but practise helps the most i find.

Yes. Thank you for tips. I do have one tip I'd like to share... I have been using the discarded soda boxes cut into cardstock squares to make my color pallets and do consistency tests. The back of my hand is not the right color for such things. Love your channel, thank you!

Thinning paint can be quite tricky, and over the years, I've become accustomed to thinning paint to the point where it's almost like dirty water. Only time I go thicker is when I'm blocking in large areas of base.

Like skim milk is not only unhelpful, but I think it's frequently wrong!
@@LylaMev I think this is correct for airbrushing though? although I haven't gotten my AB yet. This is what I heard though.
I often like to use thinner layers when painting by hand though, and then build it up. I think this goes back to me being overly cautious though. multiple thinner layers is better than the paint being too thick after all. I do try to get the right consistency now, and get it down first time.

Everything about this is great! Great video. One tiny issue... applying paint constantly over long periods of time, will cause absorption of the chemicals in the paints into your body... your not going to go white within a week but... something to bare in mind, each to their own...a friend got very ill from this very reason n cause!!! So do a allergy test... if you got thin skin or known issues with your blood or sensitive to chemicals in general … then reconsider this paint on to bare skin habit :P

It's funny how I have watched tons of "how to paint miniatures" videos these past two months, and even though you mentioned things I have seen in other videos, it resonated with me finally in yours.

I paused this video a few days ago to get the name brand of the Paint Puck . It came in the mail today, I got the lime green one. It’s amazing! I told them that I saw it on your channel and that they made a sale because of you!😎 thank you for all your tips & tricks. I’ve learned a lot. 🥳
also lastly, you should make your own thinning agent, it works out a lot cheaper in the long run. galeria matte medium, 50:50 mix with water (you can use distilled water if you want to be fancy) and a very small drop of washing up liquid/dish soap to help break surface tension. Just be careful when adding the soap as it can make the mixture bubbly. TBH it doesn't matter too much if you have a few bubbles though, as you're going to mix it into paint anyway.
It can also be used to mix with pigments, as a matte varnish, loads of things. I stopped buying acrylic thinning medium a while back. Got a huge tub of matte medium (500ml) for 15 pounds (so about 10 dollars) and this makes around 50 pots of medium based on the lahmian stuff from citadel (not sure how much you get from Vallejo, as never owned it. Citadel prices are way more expensive though, so imagine you're getting a better deal. The only thing I bought from Vallejo that was expensive was the "metal colours" but they're amazing, and you get a lot)
Ofc if you are happy with the Vallejo one, that's cool. I just found that making my own was a lot more satisfying.

Great video! Really useful for newer painters to know about why having a moist brush is so important! It's not only great for applying the paint off the brush, but having a bit of water in the bristles will help prevent getting paint pigment up in the ferrule as well, since water and pigment/medium won't mix unless agitated, when you load up your brush with paint and it's already moist the base of the brush already has water there, so the pigment won't take up that space!
I ruin so many brushes by getting paint in the ferrule. It's something I need to work on!
@@LylaMev omg that is my entire life! This is why I stick to synthetic brushes, so much less depressing than ruining an expensive brush. I have had good success with the Broken Toad Fugazi series tho!

I always thought that when I saw painters adding inks, that it was just to change the color or for the flow. Thanks! Now I understand inks a little better.
I’ve been building gundams for about 5 years now, and I wanted to branch out and dry something different, and miniatures peaked my interest. I used spray paints and acrylic pens for gunpla so very informative on how to actually paint since I haven’t messed with it a whole lot

I learned a lot about wet painting that I wish I'd known when I started painting. The only things I knew were wetting the brush and layering of paints.
Feel free to cringe, but for the first few years of painting, I dipped the brush fully into the paint pot. Then I started using a pallette, which helped me to get so many colors other than just the ones provided by the paint. After watching this, I'm definitely going to try thinning my paints, if not outright switching to wet pallettes.

I've been painting on and off for 30 years, and I have only in the last year worked out some of these. This is an absolutley essential video. The tip about using a wet brush is probably the number one tip here. I wish there had been internet tutorials when I started out.

Another issue related to this, is contamination on the figure you are trying to paint. It is so frustrating having gone through the cleaning process, only to find the paint, including the undercoat, simply will not stick. I've tried everything, including vinegar, but this one particular brand of miniature, seems impossible to clean effectively. Good video.

No way!!!!! I am working on my first miniature and used black ink to darken/thin out the paint and white ink to lighten/thin out the paint and thought I was sooooo clever.... Good to know that it's actually a thing though.

I bought a set of starter paints from Reaper. They come in dropper bottles like Vallejo and they already contain a flow aid mixed into the paint so you can use them directly with just a wet brush.
