A day late catching this one, and (we) have designated Baumann. I am wondering if we've seen him in an Orioles jersey for the last time? Conflicted.. (didn't he throw a complete game no-hitter when starting at Bowie? Or am I conflating memories?) Change a-comin'....

I think I'm too harsh of a critic but I only really trust Cano and Coulombe, pitchers who can be effective even when their stuff isn't perfect. Then I put everyone else in semi-trust including Webb, Pérez, Akin, and Kimbrel as pitchers who can dominate or totally fall flat depending on how their stuff is going that day; Saurez is also at this level because of his lack of a track record, if he's still pitching like this in July then he's in my trust ranking. I had Baumann in don't trust but I'm writing this after his DFA.

Man, would Yimi Garcia look good in an Orioles uniform. Seriously doubt he gets traded within the division, however. I agree with your trust assessment. I still hope we can add two guys who miss bats. Some combination of Ryan Helsley, Hunter Harvey, Lucas Erceg, Tanner Scott would be nice

One rule change I'd like to see is dropping the 13/13 roster requirement. I think GM/managers should be allowed to construct the roster as they like. There are times it would be nice to add another (9th) relief pitcher when the BP is gassed without having to DFA someone. You would think the MLBPA would support this since it would reduce wear on pitchers and hopefully keep them healthy

Does the Os #1 in MLB .700+ slugging percentage when swinging on the first pitch mentioned at very end of pod only consider swings with contact put in play, or all first-pitch swings? If the latter, that is absolutely sick.

If you are a fan of pitchers duels in baseball, this weekend series is for you. Hopefully the bats wake up for the O's, but that Seattle rotation is nasty. Last year if memory serves i do not think a single game between the two broke 3 runs. This gonna be a tough, but winnable series.

I was surprised to hear on 105.7 The Fan yesterday morning that Mullins still has minor league options. He's 8 for 68 with two XBHs since the walk-off against Twins last month so it would be in everyone's interest to send him down for a couple weeks. Also I wonder if O's might be interested in trading for Harrison Bader of Mets. He's a good OF with a little pop in his bat and was very good with Yanks in the post season two years ago, 5 homers in 9 games.

I appreciate your honest and intelligent analysis that always somehow comes out optimistic. I go up and down with the various games. So I have to give Brandon Hyde a lot of credit, though I don't always agree with him. He stays level-headed and very focused on winning.

I'm sorry to hear you're giving up on Brain Baker. I'm still hanging in there. Of course, I'm a friend of him and his family. I think he will get it together soon . Don't give up,buddy.

Good point about context being important. We have to remember that we are not operating with all the information, why it's good to read/hear the manager post game because he sometimes offers clarity and then it makes sense. I will add that I think Hyde has done a great job, but every once in a while I scratch my head on some of the decisions, particularly bullpen usage, and I think he weighs the left/right matchups a little too heavily sometimes.

Bullpen has been good so far this year. I just really hope they add two arms before the deadline that have swing and miss stuff. That's the one place where the BP is a little light. The current roster has a lot of pitch to contact guys, probably why they are hoping to get Baumann going; he's pitched better lately and I wouldn't be surprised if Akin is optioned when Rodriguez comes back.

Stowers faced a bunch of LHP in spring training and he hit them well. In his very small sample size in the majors, he homered in very 1st at bat off of lefty. Let's call it what it is, Hyde is dedicated to old school thinking when it comes to matchups. He's more concerned about handedness than stats or ability. Period.

Adley saved what would have been an awful loss. Striking out a ton and hardly drawing walks is not a formula that will do much damage in October. They struck out 20 times and drew 5 walks in the two games against Jays who haven't exactly been good this season. OTOH Yanks have totally shut down Twins who had been the hottest team in AL, winning 17 out of 20 before the Yanks series Tuesday. I watched the game last night and Yanks only struck out 3 times in 6.1 innings against Pablo Lopez who's one of the best pitchers in AL and won the game 4-0. They also beat Twins 5-1 on Tuesday night. O's struck out 9 times against Kikuchi in 4.1 innings.

I wouldn't mind if westburg leads off and gunnar hits 3 or 4 the rest of the year. I like Gunnar hitting after Westburg and Adley for more RISP opportunities

If Akin has options he's going down for GRod. They're not going to DFA Baumann if we have someone with options. Injuries are too common and pitching is too much of a premium

Towards the end of this game, i gave it serious thought that the birds would have a better chance to score if i went up for a pinch hit. I would probably say Gunnar is the better overall player, but Adley is more valuable

Mailbag question here: What do you think is the long-term future of Jorge Mateo on the Orioles? I remember most of last season he was playing pretty poorly and most of us were thinking he was going to get traded. I've always liked Mateo though, and I've never wanted him to leave the team even if he was playing poorly. I'm curious though once Jackson Holliday comes back, will Mateo become more of a bench player? Will Holliday's return eventually edge him out of the team completely? His base running is insane and he just has a good presence on the team, I'd hate to see him go!

I think that’s the beauty of the bullpen, you can make a career and get to stay in the game you love with one dominating pitch. I like to think of them as the kickers/punters of baseball 😅
