Keep it Simple? Lets Build a Model Railway Part 3 - Control Systems, Arduino & DCC - Dad Rail
Its the 3rd instalment in our lets build a model railway series. Do we really need to keep things simple. Sometimes when we are talking about hobbies there is no right or wrong way to do things. If we want to overengineer the layout we totally can!
Lets look at layout control using the NCE mini panel and Arduinos to control the trains, points and signals!

One slight inaccuracy is that in real life the Scotrail HSTs don't have slam doors, but I'm not gonna complain because slam doors are better
There's some very weird place names in Scotland that sound nothing like they look, Kirkcaldy is one of them, it's pronounced kircoddy. One of the worst is Milngavie which is summat like mulguy, go figure 😂😂
And names like Menzies, pronounced Ming-es and Dalziel, pronounced Dee-el. I think it's due to the Anglicisation of Gaelic and old Scots and it becoming a bit muddled in the process. Names tend to be pronounced more phonetically as generations pass on. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone under the age of 80 who still pronounces Anstruther as Enster.
I wish rivet would add an HST Scot’s rail in their upcoming update.
If it's hashes out like the route, expect it to be missing carriages
Just watching playback. So apologies if this gets mentioned later in stream. It’s Mark-inch. And also you are making up station names 😀..Edinburgh Gateway not Parkway
do u know any website that helps with the initail online tests

How many animals do you run over a week?
We don’t hit animals very often thankfully. In 3rd rail areas the biggest problems we have sadly are badgers coming into contact with the conductor rail.
hey welcome back dad rail
Thank you

Hello
Hey
On these 90mph sections, how fast do the passenger trains go? 65-70mph?
90 is easily achievable for the electrostars and 700s on the route. Ive have only driven passenger on this route between Redhill and East Croydon, but after crosssing from slow to fast at Stoats Nest, you could easily achieve 90 before slowing for the 60 at South Croydon.
Are there going to be any more rules videos as you said in your intro video there will be about 50 videos and I'm sure there's many more rules
I’m a Signaller and these videos help to give me a driver’s perspective of the GSMR system. Thank you!
Lofty goals. Good luck!
Actually the original (video based) train simulator appeared in 1995 from Ongakukan on the PC and Mac well before MS trainsim. They later ported it to the Playstation consoles in varying forms. Not sure if videos of these are out there.
I’ve got vague memories of playing it, although it ran terribly!
@@DadRail lol...i bet.
The class 37 sounds way better than this 🤣😁
Not much can top a 37 if we are being honest!
@@DadRail totally agree with you mate can’t beat them 💯👌
Yes to the phone. No to the keys. You've inadvertently placed your colleage at risk, lone working etc etc. The public chosing to ignire insteuctions to wait at their own risk. But.. I get your logic.
There is always going to be some level of risk in anything we do, I guess it’s subjective and all we can do is judge each situation on it’s merits. What’s not clear in the video, although the staff member I left was the only member of platform staff, there were still train crew and ticket office staff around. Lone working was also commonplace when somebody went for there break. Thinking back that’s pretty poor management to allow that!
For the first LLL game, it was a 150, so probably in GWR livery and in Devon, working the Paignton - Exmouth Branch
Can I ask what the Red Kink in the line on the map just before Radford Road Bridge means ? I concur with all that has been said about this video & all the videos that you have produced absolutely brilliant work
Hi John, thanks for the kind worlds. The red kink is simply where I changed the track alignment on the map. The map is a bit tight for space so sometimes I have to shift the tracks depending on what junctions etc are approaching.
I'm from the school of simple is best, (it can also be cheaper!!), also trains don't exist in a vacuum. I like to consider my layouts to be a) part of a system, b) have a reason for being, c) have some history. You don't have to be able to get from everywhere, to everywhere; real world rail companies generally did what they needed to do as efficiently as possible. Back in the steam days you may find various freight yards along the line with either up OR down access, and arranged for trailing drops, so you didn't have to run around all of the time. It's even a good idea to look for stations that roughly map to your plan, and examine their detail through the ages, what was built, how it was updated, and what it looks like today (and where the goods yard used to be before the Tesco's car park replaced it!). In my research I've found that real world rail yards don't always allow for 100% go everywhere, do everything moves, but they do offer the moves that the company needed to do, because of the traffic and where it came from. Also from the simple school, if you cover the board with track, there's less room for scenery (which tells the story of why the trains are here). Questions I'm asking about your layout design: Why does platform#1 exist? Could it be a fenced off spur for the aggregate yard? (and possibly eliminate the headshunt, a crossover and a point motor!) Why 3 tracks from the east side? with 2 you could simplify the entrance to the fiddle yard, and further cut costs on all those points and motors. Do the sidings accessed from Platform#4 need mainline access, are they storage for trains which terminated here and that are out of service during non-peak times? Do they need to be that long?? Is the spur heading off to the middle of the board a branchline? Why not make it one, give it a fiddle yard hidden under some scenery. Where is the Tesco's Car Park going to be? 😁 Other points: Bidirectional tracks in the main fiddle yard are excellent idea (not so great for steam era), since you can run all of your multiple units from these tracks in either direction. 3 way points and cross overs can be points of frustrating failure, if you can do without (have the space), I'd give some consideration to something simpler.
Can only agree fully with other comments - great commentary, informative but unobtrusive and the line diagram sets the scene perfectly. Thank you.
I applaud your enthusiasm, confidence and I am sure that so many have started out this way. However I don't want to dampen you at all but let's see whether reality kicks in. Love me hobby but it can be sooooooo frustrating at times. Best of luck, waiting for your next video's
♥ first & second generation stuff, so also looking forward to Simtrack's Peak Forest pack. Lovely route, but the service lengths are too long for me, preferring 30-45mins. Interesting to see the way that you brake, I use vacuum and I struggle.
As an afterthought... I promised you the best-ever cab view, and there it was. Wide, wrap-around with minimal obstruction by the thin frames, and high as well. Probably the best in the world, ever!
16:43 Thank you, Richard, for the shout-out! I really appreciate this! It was good to see you, mate! 😊 #railwayfamily

Great narrating and track map. Thanks for sharing.
😢 you no fuck all on tsw sim4 or ain't train sim I got all free fuck so train som so fuck you boy hihi bye go two he'll batch
Excellent thank you. I normally use flight simulator (a lot...) and trying to learn TSW4 is comparatively difficult mainly because of the (effectively) absence of adequate documentation. When I buy a plane in FS I typically get a PDF manual with cockpit layout diagrams, checklists, standard ops procedures and a tutorial step-by-step flight. TSW4? found a "manual" for the type 66 on DTG site but zero explanations. Messing around in the training centre, multiple times ended up being unable to get any air pressure in the system. Watching this has given me more to check so I will try but DTG are really missing a trick with the sad lack of training for noobs. I bet lots of the games they sell get run less than 5 times then abandoned as people are disillusioned. OK they get the sale but the money must be in the DLC and they will get none of that. Oh and why can I not bind controls other than a game controller to the sim? I have countless hardware throttles and switches recognised in FS natively and through scripting modules - my airbus throttle with detents would be great for reverser etc.... Sorry, not intended to rant but some context for why this level of content is good and *vital* if users are to grow. Cheers
I have an idea of track plan and am currently deciding on how its all going to fit together electrically. One of my older layouts there was so much wiring with point moters, but now it seems so much easier. What you say about being able to play trains, has led me to deciding to use the cobalt signal levers, with a mimic panel of point position on a board. While I see a few videos about them they only ever use 3 wires, yet they have about 9 in total and i aqm not sure how all this stuff wires up to use the extra funtions when sliding the switch, (extra parts needed as such). I am interested about your board lighting up with leds along a set route so interested how you do all of that, anyway will look forward to seeing your testing area.
Not exactly packed out, is it?
Comment for the algorithm.
You're an all-time railway legend, Mr Evans
You are too kind :-)
Great video thanks for posting. I/we have used Purley, and Purley Oaks, as a base for exploring London; with my dog. as well as Epsom. It was always a lovely drive down to Purley, then train and Tube into London; then train back to the Travelodge in the evening/s. And even in Winter, it always seemed to be mild and sunny. [My German Shepherd dog was always very well behaved, and served as my 'Help dog]; and always attracted the attention and strokes haha. On Sundays, we had a nice drive have.
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. Wish I had gone
It was a good show. Hopefully it grows. It’s really great to see the modelling disciplines coming together
How VERY ANNOYING!!! aswell as B. frustrating to spend 1, 000 + hrs designing such a huge layout like this & many hours putting it together.& then finding the RUDDY thing doesn't B.work. 😠😠😠😠😠😡😡😡👎👎
It was working intermittently. From what I could gather the team operating it were really disappointed.
They never learnt any lessons from GETS when virtually no trains ran on the Saturday there either. Great scenics but if there isnt anything running when its just a diorama! I was there yesterday and was disappointed by the lack of running on MT3
Very Excited About this Signalling System. It sounds Absolutely incredible, innovative and outright cool. Can't wait to watch this layout be built up along with the signalling system and hopefully I will one day get to see (and possibly signal/operate it) tuning in from Perth, Australia - Ashur 😁👍
I’m 99%sure it will work. It an idea I’ve had for ages so I’m pleased to finally be able to put it into action
Thanks for sharing enjoy the shops guys
Looks like there’s a strike on!
Great views DadRail
I absolutely love these videos! Please keep them coming!
If this was anywhere near realistic you’d spend most of your time stuffing bits of speed notices into that side window to stop it rattling!
Same as the class 73s! A rolled up diagram or tops list works wonders.
