- Welcome aboard A class 66 Locomotive for a train drivers eye view cab ride along part of the Brighton Mainline.
We join our train at Haywards Heath, and ride in the cab with the driver all the way to Acton Lane Reception Sidings in London. This video takes us along the Brighton Mainline to East Croydon, with Part 2 covering the remainder of the journey. Departing Haywards Heath, our train crosses the Ouse Valley Viaduct, before heading up through Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport and Redhill.

Wonderful piece of work with track diagram. Thank you so much.
Can only agree fully with other comments - great commentary, informative but unobtrusive and the line diagram sets the scene perfectly. Thank you.
Impressive work with trackdiagram and information during the way. Thanks for sharing.
Good chance I might have signalled that at some point between Haywards heath and Selhurst that day, given the choice I'd have kept it up the fast at Balcombe then straight up the Quarry line 🤣👍🏼 love the freights coming past the box just wish we had more 👍🏼
8:44 GREAT TONES THERE RICHARD
I Am proud Of Our Train Driver s
First time seeing this channel. I just want to say how much I enjoyed the graphics on the right. Never seen that before, but it made everything make sense. Very informative. Plus, my favourite locomotive on the line where I was born and grew up. Every box ticked.
It's so good to have a new one of these after such a long time -- although on the map the big beige triangle does now overlap some of the other graphics, which the original 'us' graphic did not do.
I don't like a triangle, square better !
Excellent, with a fine commentary. Thanks.
excellent production, love these 'route learners' style with all the information.
Be excited for a new cab ride video thanks for the time and effort that goes into making it.
Great video, enjoyable and informative
Great video and commentary and love the rolling route information shown on the right.
Thank you 😊
Thoroughly enjoyable 😉 I look forward to part 2
Nice video.
The Keynes in Horsted Keynes is pronounced Kaynes btw.
Nice one Richard
Thank you for a fab n informative video. My old stomping ground, Redhill, has changed a lot!
Great video thanks for posting. I/we have used Purley, and Purley Oaks, as a base for exploring London; with my dog. as well as Epsom. It was always a lovely drive down to Purley, then train and Tube into London; then train back to the Travelodge in the evening/s. And even in Winter, it always seemed to be mild and sunny. [My German Shepherd dog was always very well behaved, and served as my 'Help dog]; and always attracted the attention and strokes haha. On Sundays, we had a nice drive have.
Really really nice video!
Great Video!
Nice job Guys 🆒😁
Just can't forgiving Beeching for all the cuts he did
@@marengtech313 Yes but we are still feeling the effects. So many raillines closed that could be useful to people.
Nice!
The bluebell railway has already begun planning for the restoration of the line from Horsted Keynes to Copyhold. Given how effective they were with the East Grinstead extension, it may only be ten or fifteen years before it's running again!
Insightful commentary and track graphics, it must have taken a lot of effort, thanks Richard & Loco 66 🙌
What's a route refreshing train ? A dedicated train for driver route refreshing ? So I guess doing an unusual path ?
I used to live on the Berks & Hants so the Mendip stone trains were my staple, so it will be interesting to see Acton yard in the second part.
I like this format of video with the rolling map on the right to accompany it.
Dad Rail, good to have you back -that was a long PNB !
29:30 - my house on the right, White bushes estate! Also East Surrey Hospital just after
Just so happens we caught the 375 heading towards redhill, because back then when we first got that dlc on tsw, there were services coming from and to hastings from London bridge and so on tsw, the 375s were diverted via Redhill from London Bridge
Thanks, I am looking forward to part 2.
What was it you said as the South-Eastern went by on the Up Fast at 53:00-ish? Oh I know, 'Not a rare sight on the BML but not an everyday occurrence.' And, just as it was disappearing here's one on the Down Fast!
You must have had friends in high places on that run! Being allowed to go ahead of the DMU into Redhill, and then overtaking another train in the platform! 😀
The panel 4 signaller "Gatwick" has sent the Reading service 165 up the fast as its come in late to get it past the the freight but panel 3 "Redhill" has decided to keep the freight moving 👍🏼 "good move" the 165 has to change ends anyway at Redhill so no point bringing the freight to a stop just to allow the 165 across infront of it, as for the other 377 at Redhill hard to see if it had reds or whites on it so may have been a reigate or Tunbridge service, or just another "good move'👍🏼
The speech to text caption generator produces some interesting results.
Even with a rake of empty wagons that class 66 certainly lifts its skirts and goes well.
16:07 Richard, position 4 route indicator takes you to the bi-directional platform 3 before you can get to the up fast line via T276 displaying F on theatre box indicator
It does indeed. Not sure how I missed that considering this is one of the routes I actually sign 🤦♂️
4:16 nice tones
8:44 nicer 😉

excellent format, would it be possible to position the yellow train position arrow lower down the window ( maybe make speed indicator smaller and stretch window) to show more of the route ahead?
Can I ask what the Red Kink in the line on the map just before Radford Road Bridge means ?
I concur with all that has been said about this video & all the videos that you have produced absolutely brilliant work
Hi John, thanks for the kind worlds. The red kink is simply where I changed the track alignment on the map. The map is a bit tight for space so sometimes I have to shift the tracks depending on what junctions etc are approaching.
The Unguarded Third Rail Is More Dangerous Than A Guarded One
kindly put up a vid showing pov and the control lever in cab
I would love to, but unfortunalty its not something that I have been able to get permission to film. I wont do anything in the cab without the explicit permission of my employer.
@@DadRail understood... drive safe
When will they get around to four tracking the BML south like the London & Brighton South Coast Railway said they would do and also when will East Croydon get remodeling?
There is no point the rest of the network is already above capacity. You would need to remodel Gatwick, East Croydon, Windmill and cottage junctions, and Selhurst. Even then the amount of pathways on the already 4 track sections between East Croydon and London Bridge / Victoria is already at capacity. The additional capacity gained by 4 tracking south of BTJ wouldn’t be utilised.
Making better use of the Sutton and Mole Valley would be the better option
Nothing left of Salford's up yard ! Used to work Thames Haven - Salford's aviation fuel trains there back in 80's.Not sure how Gatwick fuel is provided by these days ?
@@TheMisterB2u Gatwick is piped in these days. Heathrow still has regular fuel train deliveries
We're still waiting on promises made before 1923 😂
4:51 I'm guessing the aws magnet is for traffic heading the other way, but what prevents it from activating here?
It's probably activated only when there's a train signalled onto that track in the other direction
@@AndreiTupolev my understanding is that's not possible because there is a permanent magnet involved (which makes it fail safe)
The Brighton main line is signalled for reversible running from Balcombe Tunnel junction to Preston Park. AWS magnets for signals opposing the traffic flow are suppressed so that they don’t give a warning horn in the cab. If they were not you would see a cancellation marker 200m afterwards to tell the driver that the warning was not applicable. Permanent ones which are rare are a white diagonal cross on a blue background, those for temporary speed restrictions are a black cross on a yellow background
@@philipstanbridge6535 the question really is how does the suppression work?
I believe that normal aws magnets have a permanent magnet and an electromagnet, the bi directional ones have two electro magnets so they can both be deactivated
On these 90mph sections, how fast do the passenger trains go? 65-70mph?
90 is easily achievable for the electrostars and 700s on the route. Ive have only driven passenger on this route between Redhill and East Croydon, but after crosssing from slow to fast at Stoats Nest, you could easily achieve 90 before slowing for the 60 at South Croydon.
Redhill platform ZERO. I know how Lidcombe in Sydney's inner west got it's platform zero, how did Redhill?
It was an extra platform built on the side of the station, and rather than renumber everything else they called it 0. There's another one at King's Cross
Andrei, the platform I mentioned above was the same thing. It was added to take the Olympic Park shuttle in 2000. Thanks Geoff. ✡🔱🏳🌈
That's Y Our System is Better
Disappointing. Anyone can do this journey on a public line. What would have been interesting is the freight only section of the route to Ardingly.
Yes, anyone can do this journey in the cab of a train. 🙄
I was about to make the same point. I passed to and fro on the main line umpteen times when I commuted, and very occasionally saw one of these aggregate trains lurking at the mouth of the branch. There is I think a Bluebell Railway video made to raise hopes of reopening their line to Haywards Heath and thus connect to the main line at both ends. Still possible I suppose, but unlikely.
You deserve far more subs, views & likes. Your video quality & commentary are superb . . and the track diagram alongside is 'next level' ! well done.
