Shure MV7+ USB/XLR Podcast Microphone Review with MotivMix Demo
Should you buy the Shure MV7+? Does it sound like an SM7B, is it better than the MV7 and what's it's unique feature? View all my gear at kit.co/rayortega
The Shure MV7+ is the update to the MV7 USB podcast microphone. Shure added an extended windscreen for a better look, closer to the windscreen of the SM7B and it provides an air gap for added plosive protection. They also updated the USB port from microUSB to USBC. The touch panel was updated to include a single led light that can be customized and also actives the mute switch when using USB.
On the inside of the microphone, when using USB, you have access to many of the same digital signal processing (DSP) features like a limiter, tone and EQ controls, and compression but they added a popper stopper for more plosive rejection and the best feature, real-time denoise! This features works great and will allow you to stream or record in less than perfect environments, removing ground floor noise like heating and air conditioning as well as computer fans.
This mic. is for those who are looking for their first microphone or upgrading from a lesser mic. and want something close to an SM7B without all the additional costs.
They've also introduced the new MotivMix app that allows you to control all the DSP features of the microphone as well as record multitrack audio inside the app and use it as a virtual mixer. I walk you through all the features starting at 16:00.

    But as always it is an aggressive pushed maxed out sound. What about life like audio? No compression of loudness at all. Pure reproduction. Great demo. But boring. More of the same. Insta-content.

      @RayOrtega Před 2 dny

      Thanks for watching. What you hear in this video is pretty true to the mic. The level was only raised so that it's consumable here on youtube but definitely no limiting or heavy compression. Bringing up the audio has no effect on the native sound of the mic, if anything it also lets you hear if there are any noise floor issues. I used no EQ aka the flat option and did use noise reduction that the mic supplies because that is how I would use it and it's a built in feature of the mic.

    • @danielenstrom1873
      @danielenstrom1873 Před dnem

      @@RayOrtega Good information, then what we hear is the processing that the microphone system applies. Yes noise reduction was strong. The noise gate cuts start and end of most words. To me it also sucks the lift out of the sound as well. All nuances and textures of a voice, meaning the fidelity, are also gone. Just a note. Røde have a similar problem. Damage control on their system is to set it at -21 och -24dB and gain in the camera instead. Then it is sort of usable.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před dnem

      @@danielenstrom1873 Yes, any processing is native unless I note it, which I sometimes do my own processing later in the video as a demonstration/comparison.

    this mic need an extra anti pop filter ?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před 4 dny

      I’d say no. Of course pops depend on the person who is speaking. Every one has a different level of plosive that they produce but this version has given extra room between the windscreen and the capsule which helps more than it did on the first version. It also depends on mic placement. If your plosives are heavy you’ll want to speak into the mic off axis at more of an angle.

    Hi! Nice vid! I am a noob who learns fast. I skipped first-grade 😮. Problem is, I go straight to the end of the book because I want to solve the problem. I live in a noisy apartment. I have a U87 condenser for recording vocals. I can’t use that for CZcams content I wanted something a tad better than my iPhone and I discovered a lot of people loving dji Osmo pocket 3. It has a wireless mic that sounds pretty good. Those mics that clip on are tacky. I’m like you in tacky department. I might put a piece of black electrical tape over the Sure thing if I buy this mic. So I see a lot of good things. I was going to drop $500 on the SM7B with installed pre-amp. I play and record music and it is like a fav for dynamics . So noise is something I need to address and it looks good on camera. The thing about the MV7 is I could use it directly into the camera anywhere and if I am playing guitar at the beach with my friend singing it seems a lot more practical than the dji wireless 🛜 . But - if I fear for recording vocals in my studio I may find myself wishing I just dropped the $500 on the SMB759879 - I am getting all these numbers mixed up 🆙 So that is me. I want to solve the end before I shoot my first video. Possibly because I am prone to buyers remorse. I don’t really know anything! I might find the dji wireless will be just fine for my first 59 videos because no one will see them anyway. There goes the broken AC sitting on my top floor apartment. Had I known it was going to be like this I would have paid more attention to money when I was younger and bought a house It’s July in Los Angeles! Tell me I’m crazy 🤪

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      Can't say for sure 100% but phantom power sends power down XLR cables, not 1/4" line or instrument cables so it doesn't sound like it would be an issue. Maybe more accurately, phantom power should not be going to the 1/4" inputs on the combo inputs you see on the L12, it should only be sending phantom to the XLR input when turned on. Found a thread where someone is asking about this for their Moog so it's similar to what you are doing and might provide extra insight www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/14dmv1w/trs_cables_and_phantom_power/

    I started podcasting in late 2013 with a Rode Podcaster USB mic, upgraded in 2015 to a SM7B. Now in 2024 I am looking at the MV7 Plus just to make podcasting simple. I've never been pleased with all in one units like the Rodecaster or DLZ Creator. To my ears, nothing beats the old analog sound of a Mackie 1402 VLZ3/4 with a DBX 286S. But for simplicity sake, I may upgrade/downgrade to this USB mic.

      @@RayOrtega Thank you for responding. I will get the mic after 3 days. Do u think usb c to usb a from brands like anker will be fine? Will it affect the sound quality by any means?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      The one I linked to is Belkin which is just like all the other brands (Anker, etc). I generally like those two brands for third party parts. I don't think there will be any affect on quality, from what I know they're all just transferring 1 and 0s as opposed to what you find with analog where the signal can be affected by the cable. I'm also far from an expert so this is just my off-the-cuff assumptions and based on what I've tried.

    If your vocal mic gain is set that high your setup is wrong and will cause clipping.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      It could. Depends on the mic. Plug in an SM7B, which is the most popular mic, and you'll need all that gain ;) But this was just an overview, not a demo but I'll link my gain staging demo video into this video, thanks.

    hey guys I was wondering if anyone can help me fix the issue where it says I'm still using the old ShurePlus desktop app, but I have already removed the old and started using the new Motiv Mix desktop app for windows and it won't let me access the device settings in the Motiv Mix Desktop app.

      hmm interesting one. Maybe reach out to Shure and see if they have thoughts. I just got an email about them getting rid of the old apps and having MotivMix only so maybe something was stuck in that transition. I'm on a mac so I'm less familiar with Windows apps. Make sure you're firmware is up to date as well as your operating system. And maybe try plugging the mic into your phone and using the app there if you are just trying to setup the mic with the settings you want.

      I had the same issue just now. I deleted the old Shure Plus desktop app and installed the new MOTIV Mix. So far, I took @RayOrtega advice and made sure my OS system was updated. From there I closed the app and restarted my whole PC. Logged back in and started the MOTIV Mix desktop app. I found success and it's finally showing the manual settings and some additional things. Hope this helps

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      I've heard that too but I don't hear it. Sounds great on my voice but that's just one sample. The key is to listen to all the samples you can find here and decide how it sounds to you, not necessarily how the reviewer thinks it sounds. As reviewers, we test a lot of mics and gear and we get way down in the weeds and tend to hear the smallest detail that 99.9% of the audience will never hear. I think it sounds great but it's definitely subjective and the only thing you can do is decide if it's good to you. Apart from there being an actual problem with the mic, it's going to just be opinion. So far I haven't heard of any issues with the mic, just opinions;) Thanks for watching.

Somehow we got it working but I am not even sure how. Would love a video explaining how to best use this as a live PA mixer. Thanks.

      No matter that use it at home if you’re a musician you are a friend but if you’re yourself playing just your own music better at home otherwise rent a PA system and if you’re a good musician or you can sign you really don’t need right tomorrow but no I would not play out with it! Not even the L 20 These are meant for home….

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      Thanks, Patrick. Glad you got it working. I didn't spend any time with it using it as a PA and it was just a borrowed unit for the review so sadly I can't tinker with it to try that setup. It can definitely be confusing given that all the controls do multiple functions digitally. It's powerful but a steepish learning curve.

    I'm listening through Audio Technica M50s, and the two sound astonishingly similar--much more so than several other people's tests. I wonder whether if it's something about the timber of your voice? Or just having the settings dialed in to really nail it?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      You probably have it right both ways. Definitely different voices will matter and that’s why it’s great that there are so many reviews so that hopefully you can find someone who has a similar voice to your own. There isn’t too much processing here but the MV7+ was using light compression and the Denoise was on. And the SM7B had some light compression to match but mostly they were just level matched. The SM7b is darker in its sound otherwise they sound very similar on my voice.

    I have used Mackie's for more years than I care to admit. I use them for gigs and I use them for recording, and I use them as sub mixers in the signal chain! Mackie is NOT kidding when they say that they are built like a tank. When you are doing gigs - if they are not tough (and I mean tough) they are going to let you down. If they don't have enough head room - they will let you down, if they can't keep working when dropped, and yanked, they will let you down. Mackie has NEVER ever let me down. They are very quiet (no internal noise, NO scratchy pots, SOLID connections - even after YEARS of use). I have had lots of things fail on stage, cables, mics, power cables, but never a Mackie. You still want to treat your equipment well and take care of it, but gigging on stage, loading in and loading out? Things can happen (and unfortunately do). OK, I have written enough, get a Mackie, they won't let you down, and will always sound great!!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před měsícem

      Thanks for sharing your experience, Cynthia. I would agree. Only issue I ever had with one was an early model USB version and the phantom power switch has a loose connection and the USB had a hum which Mackie acknowledge and fixed in the next generation. But I have still used the same mixer for live shows and it handled everything I threw at it. Great stuff.

    hey there, i have a question. when using the app with all the settings we can change, if we close out of the app do the settings we just changed save to the microphone itself? Or do I have to have the app constantly running in order to have my applied settings work?

      The problem is its subjective. I've seen that review too and I think the USB is just as good as the MV7. I've reviewed both mics so you can also watch my other review to see how the two differ on my voice via USB. I think they both sound great. But also when you review mics you start to hear the slightest of details that nobody who will hear your voice will ever hear. I think you'll love the MV7+.

    As always, a great review. I held on to one of my older AT-2100 mics because it's just so easy to use on the fly with the USB. Were I looking for a mic that's solid enough for podcasting, online video game nights, and videos, the Shure MV7+ would be hard to pass by. I love my SM7B, but I don't use it for everything, simply because there's more set up. Both mics seem solid, and now when people ask me which mic to get, I can point them here 😀

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega Před 2 měsíci

      Agree. This is the USB mic I’d be getting if I was starting today. It’s really good. Obviously for budget reasons the ATR series mics are great. Over the years I’ve fell out of favor with recommending them as much simply cause I’ve come to realize they are very sibilant. But they’re still good mics. Q2U a little smoother so that’s my goto reco in that range.
