Why Does My Microphone Only Go To One Side of my Camera's Audio? (FIX)

- How do you make your microphone go to both sides of your audio track in your camera? Here's how to fix it before and after any recording. Gear used linked below & all my gear at kit.co/rayortega
If you have a microphone that is only sending audio to one side of the stereo track in your video camera (DLSR, mirrorless, etc.) then you probably have a mono microphone. That is, a microphone, most likely a lavalier/lapel (lav.) mic., that is mono and when you plug it into a microphone input on a camera which records a stereo track, then you only get audio to the left side of the audio track.
To fix this, you can buy a cheap adapter that will send audio to both the left and right side (dual mono) or if you have already recorded the audio and need to fix it in your video editor, then here's how to do that in both Premiere Pro and FCPX.
In Premiere Pro, you can use the effect, "fill right with left" on your audio track and this will send the audio that was recorded only on the left channel to the right channel making your audio dual mono which means it will come out of both speakers or both sides of your headphones when played back.
The better way to do this in Premiere Pro is to right-click on the audio track - audio channels - select Left in the right channel box. I prefer this method because it's faster but also because now your waveform that shows in your timeline will display waveforms on both the left and right of your audio track.
In FCPX, select the audio track to be fixed, navigate to the audio settings and change the track from stereo to dual mono. That's it.
One cool feature having a stereo track to record to, is the ability to buy a stereo splitter and insert two microphones allowing you to record two tracks of audio, one on the left and one on the right. In post production you can break this stereo track apart into two mono tracks and now you have to separate tracks of audio which can be individually processed.

Thank you so much for the information! I got the rode wireless mic and was having this problem. đ
Glad to hear this was helpful, thanks for letting me know!
My external mic that I plugged into my camera has the two rings but only recorded one channel. I used your quick fix and voila...I have audio coming out of both speakers. Thanks, you are a LIFESAVER!!!
That's great to hear, Randy, thanks for letting me know!
Mine has two rings too and records on the left channel. Is this a problem with the mic itself?
@@ShoPauMoto I'm wondering about this too same question! Would appreciate if anybody has any idea
@@lyili3428 hi i purchased a different mic wich has the same two rings but now the audio works L and R. I'm guessing the first mic I putchased was really mono
Perfect. Had this problem coming out of GoPro 7 into my headset - editing the channels in volume properties did the trick! Thank you.
đ
Within 2 mins, I needed 2 solutions,I googled them both and they both brought me to you with amazing quick answers, I donât think I have. Ever subcribed to a channel so fast! Thank you!!!
Amazing feedback, thanks!
You just saved me so much! I recorded an entire video only to hear that only the left stereo was recorded. GAME CHANGER!! đ„
Thank you so much for solving the issue!
Wow! Iâve been having this issues with my recordings; didnât know what to do. Thanks for this video. It was helpful
Brilliant. Thank you. My Comica records one side louder than the other. With your trick, I can use the best sounding side. Thanks.
Dual mono in Final Cut Pro! You are a lifesaver. I use a Rode NTG Mic and ordered another TRRS cable thinking that is the problem. Looks like the problem still exists there and editing it will fix it. Thank you for the lesson!
Glad this helped!
You couldn't have done any better on this video. Quick and easy remedy that did exactly what I needed. Thank you very, very much!!!!!
Thanks for watching and for the compliments, glad this helped!
This is a great video, Ray! Iâm disappointed that someone gave it a thumbs down. You covered everything that needs to be said about the topic and even showed how to fix the problem in multiple editing programs.
Thanks! Thumbs down is inevitable, I didn't even notice cause it's basically a given. Likely they didn't even watch. Par for the course here sadly. The good news is that CZcams likes all interactions even the 'bad' stuff so what the person thought they were achieving, they likely weren't;) Appreciate the kind comments and the view!
thank you very much Ray it helped i have been looking for this answer for a very long time đđđ
Very clear and concise. Thank you so much!
Thanks
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! I thought my final project was ruined! The audio was only playing on the right side I clicked the "Fill Left with Right" filter and now the audio is in full! Thank you so much!!!

Great video! Itâs answering some questions but Iâm still learning a lot of this stuff. I have a 4 pole lap going into a Canon T6i and Iâm still only getting left channel sound. When I pull it back as describe in another comment, it cuts the audio altogether. Do I need that adapter for that?

Hey Ray, very great informative video! The problem I have is kinda different and was wondering if you could help me. So I have a Canon 90d along with both the rode wireless go 1 and 2 which came with a TRS cable, now before both the left channel and right channel were working fine when I plugged it into the audio jack but all of a sudden, the right channel is the only one working. I tried plugging in other microphones I have such as the Rode Videomicro, Deity D4 duo with different TRS cables and the audio is still only coming out the right channel. Furthermore, I tried using split mode on the rode wireless go 2 and when I did that 1 microphone had audio coming out of the right but the other left channel wasn't working for the 2nd microphone I'm not sure if there is a problem with the headphone jack in my camera, or if its the cables. After watching this video I put in an order for the mono adapter so we'll see if that works but if you had any advice I'd be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!
Very helpful

My earlier comment might come across as a set-up but it wasn't. Truth. A question please. What editor would I use to do this. I have OBS, Openshot and Audacity? Can't seem to do it these. Thanks again.

Hi Ray, I have the reverse problem. My SONY HDR-CX450 camera has a mono microphone input! When I plug in my (steroe) TRRS mini-jack it simply won't record at all, but when I plug in my TR mini-jack it DOES record..., but only on one channel. I guess I won't be able to solve this problem while recording..., but I will only have the possibility to solve it while editing my video. Or is there a thing on the market that does make it possible while making the initial recording ??
Not sure if you can help with this. I have a Rode microphone which has the two lines meaning it should record both sides. Since ive been using it thats what has been happening however during my last few recordings it has only been coming out of the left. Now ive seen this video i can obsviously change it in Premiere Pro but i wouldnt mind not having to with with each clip. Thanks!
ok, so, I've had a Canon t5i for a while now and use a rode mic with it and I did not have this problem until recently. can I fix it without having to buy an adapter?
My plug has two lines and still I get only audio from the left?
same
@@jackprizant7704 Same issue, im using Lavalier Go mic to Sony 7RIII camera and audio record is in one channel.

Hey Ray great video explains the issue i am having but i have one question i am using a wireless LAV mic and and I can not get the stereo sound I do have the adapter which works great when the mic is plugged directly into the camera but when i have the wireless receiver plugged in with the adapter it does not give me stereo...any thoughts on how to resolve this?
Any luck with this? This is the problem we are having
Following
I don't have a mono microphone. Mine has two black bars, not one, but I'm still having this problem when I plug my Rode microphone into my Canon 90D. Any help with that? Thanks
Really helpful just saved me from having to start all over
My go pro hero 7 black records only left channel even while I am using the stereo lavelier mic. What could be the issue?
I have Sennheiser mk200 mic.....if i insert it fully then it's not working....n if I remove the Jack it slightly then it works... What's the issue here
Thanks for this video! I still don't quite understand what's going on in my situation and am hoping someone can share their thoughts on it. I'm using a TRS microphone jack with a TRS 3.5 to 2.5 mm adapter (a necessity for compatibility with my Fujifilm XT30). According to this video and other guides I've seen around the web, this should mean that I'd record stereo sound, right? But I'm not recording stereo. Instead of getting the left channel only, I'm only recording the right channel. What does this mean? Also, I'm attempting to fix this in DaVinci Resolve, which doesn't seem to have any of the solutions described in this video. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
I am having the same issue đ I think maybe there is a problem with the audio jack port of the camera itself
Hi everyone, my mic comes with a TRS cable but still only channel one gets the input signal. Does it mean the cable is defective? or maybe the mic is designed for mono channel? My camera is Sony a7 ii.
I have the 2 black bars on my 3.5 jack BUT my GH5 still only records audio to the left channel, in the settings I cannot seems to find a way to change this?
Any help is appreciated!
How about with an xlr mic input?
What if you camera has two audio mic xlr inputs like canon xa20?
Hello, I have a RODE microphone, but it works on one side of the 5D MARK 3 camera, is this problem solved, thanks
Hey Ray, thanks for your video. I have a lav with a TRRS plug (for smartphones I guess, it works perfectly fine with my old iPhone that still has the 3.5mm jack), and it came with an adapter to TRS. If I plug it into my Fujifilm X-S10 that I just got, I get no audio without the adapter, and only the left channel with the adapter. But I would have expected to get both channels if it's a TRS plug. Do you have any idea what's going on?
Unfortunately, I don't have a different mic to test out whether the issue is the port of the camera. I hope it's not. I got it used but it's basically new.
Edit: If I connect the same mic with the same adapter to my Mac (via a USB audio dongle) and record it with GarageBand, I get both channels (same thing on both channels though). đ€
Edit 2: I can imagine that either the Mac or the USB dongle are detecting that there's only the left channel and use it for both sides. I tried to measure the TRRS to TRS adapter and there is no connection to the right channel at the TRS side. So if I additionally had one of those adapters that you use, I would probably have both channels on my camera as well.
Edit 3: So many edits. đ I found an old lav mic with a native TRS plug, and that one works as expected with the camera! It might even sound better than the other one I had. If you actually read all this, thanks a lot, and sorry for wasting your time. đ
Good question. It could just be the wiring, different cables do things differently so you never know. Maybe if you have a trs cable that you can send any audio into (phone audio, mp3 player, computer, etc.) you could test to see if the camera is taking a stereo/dual mono signal.
@@RayOrtega I figured that the TRRS to TRS adapter doesn't connect anything to the ring (i.e. right channel) of the TRS side. Not sure why the Mac gets both channels (it's probably either the USB dongle or the software), but the camera's port works fine, fortunately. :) Thanks!
The same is happening to my client but itâs a stereo jack I saw it. Any suggestions?
Hi, my sound only JUST started doing sound on left side. It used to be stereo whether I recorded via rode mic on top of my camera or with lapel mic. Now it only records left no matter which method I use. What happened and is this a different problem?
Pam, that's very odd that it just started and it was not an issue before. Something had to change either in your camera settings (probably not) or your software which is likely because the Rode mic would send audio to both sides of the stereo channel if it was plugged into your cam. A lapel mic could be mono and that would cause the issue but if so it shouldn't also be happening with the Rode. Go into an old project that was using the same mic and see if you can see what has changed. That said, you can use the methods I show in this video for correcting the issue in the edit.
@@RayOrtega Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am not very techie and was wondering what I did wrong after a year of doing videos - I have this weird problem. I will try your suggestions - thanks again!
Will the adapter work through gopros adapter?
Haven't tried it but if your GoPro has an 3.5mm mic. input and your mic. is mono, it seems like it might work. Should be the same idea.
I bought the adapter but it hasnât worked, when using the adapter I donât even get mono audio it shows no audio coming in on the meters. Iâm using a Sony ZV1. Any tips?
Thanks a lot iam from India đźđł it help me a lot
Here's what's strange.
I have a Lav mic from a Sennheiser Evolution 100 Series wireless microphone system and that Lav mic has a TRS connector. If I plug the mic directly into my DSLR (instead of using the wireless setup), I am still only getting the left side. The audio levels are turned up both channels, so not sure what is happening. Any ideas? Thanks.
Very good topic. I have same problem. My kit sony 6400, boya wm 6 wireless clip on. All the audio jack are double black ring. Boya transmite a stereo sound, im sure because i monitor it via stereo headphone. But when i plug to the 6400, only one bar show respond. Do you have any idea ? Thanks
Hi Leo, did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm having a similar issue with my Fujifilm XT30.
Sory my english is terrible
I tried another 3.5mm jack to my camera, and the stereo function works fine. And i tried the first 3.5mm jack to another camera, and it works too. Its strange but ithappen
