  • Is the Sigma 16mm f1.4 my new favorite Sony APSC lens? Yes. Surprising how much I enjoyed this lens, see it in my vlogging Kit kit.co/rayortega/sony-a6500-v...

    I asked B&H for a review unit of the Sigma 16mm f1.4 for Sony APSC mirrorless cams and attached it to my a6500 and set off for work in Atlanta, Georgia. I had seen good things online about this lens and anytime I tried to vlog with my 28mm, I knew I needed a much wider option. So I gave it a shot and was completely surprised with how this lens was even better than my native Sony lens.
    It's definitely wide enough at 16mm which is 24mm equivalent on a crop sensor camera like the a6500, a6300, a6000. I never had to worry about keeping myself in frame which is a tough thing to do when you don't have a flip screen. But not a problem, this lens is plenty wide.
    Combine that with the f1.4 and there was no situation that I could not tackle with this lens. The quality of the image coming out even wide open at 1.4 was stunning. Super clean in low light and I think it's pretty much the perfect combination to go with my a6500, it allows me to get every bit of quality out my camera.
    And there was no compromise with using a third party option (Sigma). I dare to say it worked better than my native Sony lens when working in continuous auto focus. It held steady focus at 1.4 and I didn't see any focusing breathing where the out of focus background pulses.
    The lens does make a small noise while in AF but in most vlogging situations even with a microphone on top of the camera, it's not loud enough to ruin your audio.
    The Sony a6500 is the perfect camera in the Sony line for this lens because the 16mm doesn't have image stabilization. With the 6500 you get a stabilized sensor and therefor enough stabilization when handholding this lens.
    It's a tad bigger that I would ideally want to carry everywhere but I'm just being picky and I'm spoiled by my smaller, lighter 28mm F2 and this isn't a real criticism, just me finding something negative to say cause this lens is almost perfect in my opinion.
    Of course I had to return the review unit but I'm definitely buying this lens, I just enjoyed it too much and all the video I shot with it ended up looking so good that I have to have this in my kit. I'd definitely recommend this lens if you're looking for a wide angle option for video on your Sony APSC camera.

      Ray let me ask you. I'm thinking to get the sigma 30mm lens to achieve great medium shots. But eventually I'll want to vlog a bit. Maybe I'll be out of frame but I'll use a gimbal, maybe this extends the distance between me and the sony. What do you thinks? Should I buy de 16mm option instead? Or I'll be ok with the 30mm? Thanks man!

    Ray,
    Great video and review. I was wondering if you had any issues with any jittery footage with this lens or similar lenses on a camera body without IBIS like the A6300? I rely on OSS a lot and I am wondering if it will end up being an issue if I use this lens with a A6300 body and a Zhiyun Crane gimbal. Thank you again for the great review.

      @RayOrtega  Před 5 lety

      I just checked through all my night b-roll and sadly I did not note the profile which makes me mad cause it turned out so good! But what I was able to decipher is that it was not SLOG2 which I usually shoot in. That is not recommended, in general, for low light so I switch to a profile with more contrast. I think I may have tweaked some of the settings as well but not sure when I did that. But I think any of the non SLOG profiles would do a good job.

    Hi Ray, I just got the 16mm Sigma lens so I'm checking out reviews. Very good one here. I was wondering, on some of your shots, the colors look pretty flat. I'm curious, was that a choice you made or was the Picture profile off? I notice when using my A7III I have different Picture Profiles for different types of shots and I was wondering what your take was on that after viewing your footage here.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 5 lety

      Hi, Glen, do you have some specific shots you are referring to? I can tell you that I often use Slog2 which of course is very flat. I also will sometimes bring up the black level in post which gives a flatish like look. Mostly I'm always just playing with the color grade. I wish I had a more consistent look but I can't stop myself from constant tweaking in order to learn.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks, it's about nailing focus when you record and shooting at the right frame rate (high as your cam allows in it's highest resolution (1080p) and using the proper shutter for that frame rate. Then proper post processing, see how I do it czcams.com/video/PT1tR2Y-y7E/video.html

      @hardjuan2587 Před 5 lety

      @@RayOrtega i know the essentials for shooting and edting slowmo, it's just that your a6500 footage looks super sharp compared to other videos that i've watched (With the sigma lens and all). I always thought that shooting wide shots in 1080 with this camera wasn´t an option due to the massive difference in quality compared to the 4k, (way too soft) but you make it look like 2k and looks like nothing i've seen before.
      Besides your editing process, is there any additonal sharpening tool that you use in post? what about in camera sharpness levels?
      Any tips when exporting?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! Sadly the camera, at least with the firmware it had at the time, did not tell me what ISO it was using when in Auto. I mentioned that I limited the ISO so that it could not go any higher than 6400 so whatever it is, it's that or less. It's been a long time since I filmed this but I suspect I limited it at 6400 specially because I found that I could get decently clean video in low light with that ISO. Watching it again, it seems high to me but that is one of the cool things about this camera and I think using a flat picture profile like Slog2. @@maxpyne310 I think the Olympus (maybe) and Panasonic definitely look like they do better IBIS than Sony. That said, walking is still walking and I wasn't going to walk the streets at a snails pace with knees bent lol. This is just use in the real world which is more a comment for Abdul than yourself cause yes there is better IBIS

    Don't forget to mention is has no image stabilization so people like me want to vomit watching your walking footage. Not your fault. I'm happy my A6500 has in body stabilization. I never shoot moving video without my Zhiyun crane anyway. Thanks for the review.

      Correct, in this case the 6500 is doing the stabilization and I mention that near the end of the video (6:05) but no, if you're walking, IS won't help enough in most cases and while a gimbal is great, it's not quite as practical as just having the cam in your hand or on your body. I will get a gimbal at some point but I'm less likely to have it in quick, day shooting vlog scenarios. That said, I'm sure I will when I test it out;) Thanks for watching!

      perhaps you should watch the entire video before leaving a comment.

    16 is almost 24mm full frame equivalent

      Correct, on a crop sensor like the a6500 it will be 24mm field of view.
