Sigma 16mm 1.4 Review [Sony e mount] - Is it too good to be true?

- ★ The Sigma 16mm 1.4 Review for Sony E mount ★ Is this the lens that every owner of the a6500, a6300, and a6000 should own? Or is it too good to be true?
16mm on the Sony APS-C is a fantastic focal range, just wide enough without being ultrawide. Then, keep in mind that f1.4 aperture and you have to know that this lens is going to make a splash. Think it's too good to be true?

*What is your favorite lens? WHY?* 🧐
Dunna Did It
It would be this one if there was one for nikon
Mateo - maybe time to switch to Sony lol 😂
i bought this lens before i went to osaka. ive always use my 17 to 50mm f2.8 lens for travel videos, but this lens change the whole game, specially on making some brolls!.plus, its super cheap for what it can do.
You’re totally right! Bang for buck this thing is incredible! Which 17-50??
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is my all around lens for my Canon.
Really liked this video, I shoot on an a7iii with a 24-105 G OSS as my main camera but I really need a wide angle for my secondary a6500, I think u sold me
That’s great to hear! Let me know if you have any questions about it and feel free to use the affiliate link in the description! 😁
Love your shoe reviews Seth!
Im sold too Seth.
Oh Hi Seth, I watch your videos too! :D
You sold me this lens. I had it in my basket and wanted to watch some reviews before clicking buy. I watched about half of this video, saw the portraits of your partner and went and bought it straight away. Thanks dunna!
Haha nice! I’m super glad to help Rhys! Portraits are a bit different with this one but they definitely can be done and look stunning when done right! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Seriously so thankful for your review. This is the best review of this lens that I've seen! Thank you sir!! Just bought it using your link!
Wow! Thanks so much! I’m so glad it was helpful!
Got to say, thanks a ton for adding the unedited photos. Lot of pov videos just show the edited ones. This really helps.
I've bought this lens recently and have been using it for some time with a6400. It sure is great lens. Video looks good even with 4k you can tell the difference. The only problem I have is that it distorts edges with 1.4-1.8. Strangly it shows only with photo, video is ok. Its just a minor issue and its not a problem for me. I like the quite, fast and relible autofocus.
I'm glad I watched your video.
There is a setting in the camera that might correct the distortion automatically. But definitely if you’re editing photos in Lightroom, there is a lens profile to correct that!
Just bought one yesterday based on your recommendation. Absolutely blown away with it so far!!
That’s fantastic to hear Brandon! Glad you’re loving it!
wow, answered all my questions and more. I don't think I've ever seen such a complete review. Great work!
This is a perfect review! Mixed with the questions people asked it answered every question I had!
3:13 that unedited photo though :D
Thanks!
Was that a mistake!? I thought you put it there to see who’s paying attention :P
Great video man, really appreciate the real-life test scenarios. Just getting into this stuff but primarily doing architecture and wide cityscape views, so I'll definitely be considering this one.
Thanks so much! Glad the video was helpful for you.
That's one of the two lenses I have for the EF-M Mount! Absolutely love it and it stays on my camera the majority of the time.
Thankyou for this review man! This is the first time i have seen one of your videos, but if they are all this in-depth, high quality and high energy, this will definitely be my go-to channel for reviews (and many more people hopefully). I watch a ton of Jared Polin for comparisons, but will for sure come here for more reviews.
Wow thanks so much! I hope you enjoy some of my other reviews too! I’m always open to hearing suggestions as well!
Yet again amazing video. Watching from france. Keep it up man! I'm glad someone is also using it for "portrait" pics :)
Thanks so much Steeve! Greetings from Canada! Yeah, you definitely have some things to keep in mind but I’ve really liked all the portraits that I’ve taken with this lens!
I just picked up an a6400 and I've been wanting a low aperture wide-angle lens and this seems perfect! Glad to know it has solid AF as well. Wish it had some stabilization though.
Yeah I totally hear you, luckily at this wide it should still be not too bad.
Thanks a lot, it helped me decide for this lens as my b-day gift 😍 now I'm 100% sure that's the best choice
It's the best Sigma 16mm 1.4 review on CZcams! Very informative, concise and helpful.
Wow! Thank you!!
Hey Dunna !
Totally agree with you ! Since i've got mine, i've shoot 90% of the time with it !
During my trip to Vancouver it was always on my a6500, just a perfect combo !
See you soon Man !
Also i've just released a new video on my channel, a "What's in my bag" for my trip to Canada if you want ideas on what you could get next to improve your kit maybe ?
That’s awesome! It really is a killer combination isn’t it. And for gimbal work... wooo! I wish I had my gimbal out when I was making this video now. I would have loved to show that setup too.
Oh yes, i didn't know you have a gimbal !
I speak only for myself, but i believe in handeld, haha. I really like the way it feels in the video ( of course if you not shake as a sick guy, but if you know how to be steady enough, and with the stabilization in the a6500, it's just perfect for my kind of cinematic vlog style videos..)
After my two last video speaking in front of a table inside my flat, i've realized that this is not what i like to do..
So, i guess everyone has his/her own way to tell stories, mine is outside with my camera in my hand, haha ! See you soon Man ! keep working on your vidéos, they are really great to watch !
Haha yes I have the zhiyun crane v2 although it rarely gets used! I really only try to pull it out if I have a specific purpose for it. Other than that, I’m with you! Ibis in the a6500 and a few little hacks to keep things smooth. And I’m good to go! I totally get what you mean about the sit down videos. I think I enjoy doing both! Sometimes I don’t want the trouble of running around and it’s nice to just talk in one place. But sometimes it’s nice to adventure a bit!Cheers man! Thanks for the chat! I’ll see you in the next one!
Yeah, definitly, every Monday !
Just received my copy of this lens today and boy it is good. Extremely sharp even wide open, step it down a couple of notches and its even sharper. Just took several city scapes tonight at sunset and they all came out pin sharp. Very impressed. Not sure if the 30mm is as sharp as the 16mm but I am tempted to find out.
In my tests the 30 is a bit sharper 😉
Thanks Dunna
I bought this lens and all the thanks to you and your perfect description of it.
keep it up buddy
Great to hear! I hope you love it!
Love the speed ramp dude...
Good review as im about to get this lens real soon...
Thank you so much!! I hope you enjoy the lens! Feel free to use the link in the description if you want to help me out a bit 😉
I have the A6000 plus the Sigma and I'm very happy with it, it's fantastic for low light situations but sometimes too shallow depth of field if you take a picture of a group at the Christmas dinner table. If you do need to use flash then one minor drawback is that it blocks out the lower left part of the photo so you have to manually tilt the flash a little bit.
Yeah that’s definitely true, the on camera flash only really fully works with tiny lenses. The 16mm is not a large lens in the grand scheme of things but it still gets in the way. I only think I’ve ever used the on camera flash once on any of my Sony cameras though so it definitely hasn’t been an issue for me. Sorry it’s causing trouble for you!
to be fair, you should be tilting the flash no matter the lens. gives you nice, bounced light.
After watching this video I ended up buying this lens. This is what I needed to push me over the edge and get this lens. Thanks a bunch man. Dig your videos.
That’s great! Glad I could help! Let me know what you think when you get it!
Great video man - very informative
Yo man, watched a lot of reviews about this lens on CZcams, found your video the most convincing review for me. Thanks a lot.
Wow thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Sony photographers be like, "teal and orange!"
Lol the cult of teal and orange knows no bounds. No brand or medium can hold us.
Architecture shots he said... oh my...
Exactly
teal and orange.😂
True, the ugly orange :). Want to dislike them so much.
Just subscribed. You include in 2018 info for a6000 which so many people still have and use. You did not stay on specs but even tested and showed stabilization on a real world scenario. A little hyper energy at some points, maybe it's the high tempo of the music. But overall a great useful insight. Thank you
Hey! Thanks so much for the support and the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the video!
subbed half way through the video . Great work dude!
Nice! Thanks for the support!
I have this lens for the GH5 and it's one of my favs. It's a beaut! 👍
I’ve heard a handful of m43 users say they love it too! Good to know it translates well across the different mounts!
@@dunnadidit would you choose this or the Panasonic 15mm 1.7?
I'm gonna have to leave that question to Gerald. I've never used anything panasonic haha.
@@CloutBot I'd go with the Sigma, personally, but the Panny does focus a hair faster.
I have a Gh5 also looking to get a new lens for video purposes mainly couldnt decide which wide lens to go with
One of the best reviews on any lens that I've seen
Wow thank you so much!
Good review! I have a a6000 and looking to get my first lens and I think I am convinced!
Nice! I hope you love it! There’s an affiliate link in the description if you feel like supporting the channel when you’re ready to pick it up 😁
Wow! Amazing editing! 😍
Thanks for the video! Really helped me.
Hey Dunna, you are awesome bro! ❤️ I was still deciding if I need the lens or not. But since you have recommended it several times I trust you because the end results look good. I using the a6400 and this will be great addition to my lenses. Keep up the good work, thank you! 😊 👍
Nice! I’m sure you’ll love it!
Damnnn son, I have to say this is one of the most descriptive videos out there. Straight to the point, great examples and explanations. So good I’m tripping out hhaha subscribed!
Haha 😂 thanks Jaren! I’m glad my video had such an impact on you lol! Thanks for the support!
Just about to pull the trigger on getting the Sigma 16mm for my Sony a6400. Thanks for the video and congrats on 80,000!
NICE! Thanks so much!
Thank you! I have a6000 and went out to buy Sigma 16mm f1.4 after watching your video. It's amazing so thank you for your advice!
That's awesome! I hope you love it!
i am thinking the same , any update after using the lens for 11 months now ?
Those edited photos are so satisfying!
Haha thank you! I love watching them become edited. It’s like peeling off the protective plastic on new electronics!
Dunna you did it, the whole episode is Dope, the sound is on another level. I'm looking at the Canon side of cameras, can you do something on that? The T6i.
Hey Obie! Thanks so much! Little fun fact! I recorded all of the audio on this video with a lab mic taped inside my shirt, recording into an app on my phone! I think I’ll make a video about it! I don’t know a lot of the selections for the canon side of things but I know the sigma 18-35 is one of the most popular lenses of all time and it’s made for canon mount! Definitely check that one out!
Love your stuff Man! Ive had the 16mm and 30mm 1.4 for a couple weeks now and they’re both so so good!
Thanks so much! Me too! I’ve had em for 2 months or so and I love them both!
Just picked one of these up for myself! I've had success using the lens for video on my a6300 despite the lack of stabilization.
Nice! Thanks for sharing! Hopefully that’s good confirmation for people looking into it!
This video has sold me on this lens. I'm ordering it tomorrow
Nice!!
This lens is the one next on my list. I’ve been buying vintage lenses for my 6500 but I need a wide angle lens with nice aperture since I do a lot of low light. Thanks for video, it really helped and btw great photo edits.
It’s definitely a great choice! Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
this is the best review of this lens, everyone else focus on the video ability of it, but you also touched a lot on the photo side of it, with good examples. I have an a6000, and I'm into photography only, and was worried about the non image stabilization o it, but with your short and clear input there,. I'm going to get it. thanks.
Thank you so much Ramon! I’m so glad that you think that about my review! And I’m very excited for you to get the lens! If you feel like helping out the channel, there is an affiliate link for the lens in the description of the video! Thanks again for watching and let me know if you have any questions!!
I came over from your friends page you made her a Monday music intro lol 😆 awesome channel Brotha 🤙🏽
Nice! I gotta catch up with Lucy! Thanks for coming over to check it out!
Did The Studio Dunnas create the music for this video?
If so, were they fairly (or preferably generously) compensated for their work?
Unfortunately the studio Dunna’s were all booked up on this one! But when I hire them, they’re definitely well taken care of!
Just got this lens and I love it! Thank you for the video
Awesome! No problem! Hopefully you agree with what I said!
dude your reviews are awesome! keep it up!
Thanks so much Mark! That means a lot!
I am planning to buy this with my new 6500 after watching your video. Very helpful and convincing for the travel video I want to do! Love your channel
That’s awesome! It’s still one of my favorites on my a6500! Thanks for watching.
Hey man, new to your channel. Great editing and color grading!
Thanks so much Eddie! I’m glad you enjoy it!
i just got the a6400 as my first camera and this lense... i can confidently say idk wtf im doing so far :)
Yay! Thats such an exciting point to be. EVERYTHING you learn is a big deal at that point!
@@dunnadidit honestly it really is! i mostly got the camera for twitch streaming. but i figured why limit myself to just that when i have a device that seems to be well respected in the photography world.
Nice!
😭😂
Sheesh what a beginner setup tho
I already have the the Sony 50mm f1.8 and the kit lens as well. Do you recommend I get the Sigma 16mm f1.4 as well? I m a CZcamsr who shoots videos while sitting down at the desk. I have the Sony a 6300.
The 16mm would be a fantastic addition to your kit!
@@dunnadidit Thank you :)
Very informative and helpful video. You've got a really engaging style and your straightforward delivery convinces me you believe what you're saying. You've just helped me decide to buy the lens. Thanks!
Thanks so much Grant! I’m so glad you found the video helpful! If you haven’t already pulled the trigger and want to support the channel, there is a link for the lens in the description that I get a little kickback from! Cheers man! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Just bought the Sigma 16mm and 30mm for my A6500. Now thinking about completing the Trio with the 56mm!
YEESSSSS! I have the trio and they rule!
We've seen this lens in action in the studio... Its AWESOME!
It’s my favorite lens in the studio!!
Great video mate! Really helped my decision for my a6400. I've been using the kit lens 18-135mm. It's been quite limiting for my needs. I was looking for something wider that doesn't break the bank. Or try the Sony E - 10-
18mm. Hmmm? 🤔 Either way. Thanks for this video. Still great 4 years later!
Great video man! Been looking into what lens I should get next and this video helped me so much!
Thanks a ton! Glad the video helped!
I love how you reply 2 everyone so much :)
Thanks so much for saying that! I means a lot that you noticed! I always appreciate when creators reply so I try to reply as much as possible!
4:02 ummm... nope not this way...
HAHAHAHAHA! I was wondering when someone would comment about that!
I love how you color grade your videos and process your photos!!! Mind sharing a few tips and tricks in a future video?
Thank you so much! I have a few videos on that if you dig in my channel but I’ll definitely make more too!
Thanks for the info my friend! Learned alot
No problem! My pleasure!!
Subbed... Do you have any videos of your editing techniques? Your edited images looked on point 🔥🤙🏽
Thanks so much! I have a few lightroom tutorials but I’m planning on doing more! Here’s one that is a general overview of my lightroom process(a few months ago... needs updating lol) czcams.com/video/Ar4BhGxxo8c/video.html
I watched many reviews on this lens. This was the best one!
Thank you so much Charleen! I really appreciate that!!
Thank you. I’m on the market for lenses and being able to see and learn all this information is invaluable.
Hey Jose! Glad I could help! Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks so much Alexandre! I’m really glad you enjoyed it! I really appreciate the support!
Thank you for this review!!!
No problem Kristie! Thanks for watching!
The best review about this lens... amazing 👏👏👏👏
Wow thank you so much Rodrigo! That’s so kind!!
Great review(er). Thorough and dynamic. Fell asleep during the last reviewer showing the lens statically for 15', while just talking...no photo/video examples, nothing. Great work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, love you edits. Unfortunately I only have an iPad Pro... What could I use to edit maybe?
Lightroom mobile!
This seems a great lens to use with the A6600. I have heard a few people say it doesn't AF in lowlight as well as native Sony lenses tho.
Definitely a great combo! I don’t have much trouble with af.
Dunna, thank you for your videos! Thanks to you along with recommendations from my friend I was swayed to pick up a6000! Subscribed!
That’s awesome! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
Thanks very much for your review, It helps me to make a decision
I was recently in Japan and thought about buying this lense, but I mostly use my fullframe A7 III and i have a zeiss 16-35, so i allready have this focal length covered, because of that i forgot about this lens pretty quickly. I have a a6300 as a secondary camera and after i saw this video i kind of regret not buing one especially since it is almost 100€ cheaper in Japan (so it just costs 300€ there). At the same time, i think, that i am more interested in a fast prime with this focal length not this lens especially , so i might save up some cash and eventually buy a 24mm 1.4 or similar for my a7.
(i bought an 50mm 1.1 instead for 250€ wich is a killer deal as well)
Nice! I totally understand the back and forth on decisions like that! There will always be deals and stuff if you decide to change your mind and get it though!
Very useful videos - have helped my decision making! Thank you. By the way, are you by any chance the twin brother of Mr Peter McKinnon?😜 jkjk
🤣🤣🤣
Hello, good video! Do you think the 16mm f1.4 is necessary if I have a sigma 18-35 f1.8 art in an a6500? I do not think much difference from 24mm to 27mm in full frame mode but it is in my mind if I buy a second equipment or a gimbal.
regards
Like you said, on a gimbal it’s a bit tough for the 18-35. But as far as a decent wide angle photography lens, I think the 18-35 is great. The quality is a bit better than the 16 and I didn’t mind the fact that it wasn’t quite as wide. Might be a bit redundant to have both as long as you’re ok with the size and weight of the 18-35.
Man, your editing is insane, I would love to get to your level, please upload more content related to editing
Wow thank you so much! It’s definitely on my list! Thanks man!
Are you the lost peter McKinnon brother? Hahahaha you looks like him anyways excellent video good explanation about the lens because I deciding between this one or the 10-18, is a hard choice, for you which one is better? And can you upload a video how you color grading your footage I love the CG and thanks! Keep it up dude good video !
Hahahaha that’s a new one! People have told me I look like him before but never asked if I was the lost brother lol.
Yeah the 10-18 looks pretty awesome, although sometimes f4 just leaves something to the imagination and doesn’t quite do it for low light. However, a lot of people really love that lens so there must be something to it! I do love my 16mm though so I’d vote for that one! I am definitely going to do some color grading videos in the future! Thanks for asking! And thanks for watching!
the sony a6000 is still a good camera. i filmed my hongkong trip with it and it is still good.
that lens is soldout in stores here in the Philippines!. i hope i can get one soon!
I totally agree! I still use mine all the time!! It felt like it took forever to get them in Canada too because they sold out immediately! But after a few months they came back!
Do you have any tips on focusing? We bought this lens to use with sony a6600 but we find it loses focus all the time while shooting video. Like maybe it's focused on me, but then we showcase a meal and suddenly it focused on something else
Dope review man...now I might pull the trigger on this bad boy
Nice! I hope you enjoy!
Great video man! Love my 35 ART on my A7iii!
Wait!! How did you get either of those so fast! Didn’t they both just come out!?
Hi! Thanks for the video.
You mentioned the lense paired with the a6400 (or other models with no IBIS) should not cause any issues when taking photos. Can you still confirm it after more than a year?
What would be the closest alternative to The Sigma 16mm but with lense stabilization?
I use this lens with my a6400 all the time. I also use it for video as long as I’m careful or have it on a tripod. I haven’t been able to find anything similar with OSS except for zoom lenses.
If you watch your shutter speed hand held it's like any other lens on the planet (no problem). It's even less of a problem because it's so wide.
Without IBIS you may just need to use a slightly shorter shutter speed. With 1/60s you should manage always, by being careful and talking several shots if needed you should manage up to 1/15 s or even longer. Also remember that if the subject is moving IS is useless on short focal lengths as you need to use short shutter speed anyway.
great video. i have sony zv-e10 with the kit lens. i am planning to upgrade the lens with more zoom capability. can you suggest which lens would be good and compatible.
Hey dude love this contest., I just bought at a7iii Sony and am always looking for good info on lenses. Keep it up!
Hey Andrew!! Thanks for watching. I’m jealous of your A7iii! If you do end up with this lens for it, just know you’ll have to be in crop mode to use it :) but Keep an eye out for sigmas new series of full frame lenses that are made for the A7iii series! See you at the Summer Solstice yoga!! 🧘♂️😁
Seems like focal length and aperture would be ideal for astrophotography. Any idea how the coma is on the lens?
From what I can tell it would be a great Astro lens. No big issues with coma that I’ve seen.
I barely noticed a difference between the stabilization on or off and with the stabilization on I noticed some warping
Yeah it definitely doesn't take out the big shakes from walking like a gimbal might. Little handheld jitters are definitely where IBIS helps.
Great review and examples dude! I've had this lens for almost a year now but your thumbnail was too enticing not to click!🙌
I think the thing I love the most about this lens is the fact that it's SO fast for such a wide lens, that you almost get a full frame aesthetic from the images, despite being on a 1.5x crop.
Absolutely! I 100% agree! It’s really a fantastic piece of glass!
What are you doing for great videos. This is my first Video from your channel.
I am from Germany and immediately subscribed to your channel after the first video. Your descriptions are so easy to understand. I'm excited. I immediately subscribed to your channel and switched on the bell. I wish you and your family a happy new year

Hello Dunna :) I was planning for the Sony 10-18mm f4,
Is this Sigma 16mm f1.4 worth buying over the above Sony lens?
Or should I go for Sony if I can?
I love my 16mm f1.4 but it all depends on what you need! Do you think you need it to go all the way to 10mm? And do you shoot in low light often?
Dunna Did It
Thank you for replying. I was planning to enter Astro photography, and night scenes. Plus I also wanted to do wide angle sharp landscapes. I already have 18-105 and wanted something wider than that.
For Astro, the 16mm would be great, you want to have a nice wide aperture so you can keep your iso down. :) I think I would go that way based on what you’re saying :)
Dunna Did It
Thank you very much. That helps a lot. I will go for this 16mm Sigma. :)
That’s awesome! If you are going to buy online and want to support the channel, feel free to use the amazon link in the description 😁

Glad to hear it!
How does it look with ClearImage Zoom? Am going to do something I never thought I'd do ... Am considering buying it again.
Haha I don’t use clear image zoom often, but when I do, I generally can’t tell the difference when reviewing footage.
