      I went with the 16mm for my gym recording. Because of the short distance between me and the cam, I needed the 16mm :-) But: Just ordered the 30mm for more leeway.

    I have been using the sigma 56 for over 2 years now and its hands down my favourite lens for sony apsc. It is a little tight sometimes, but it still allows me to capture moments in time that draw the eye into the frame and make someone feel the picture. The subject seperation and sharpness it offers is just not matched by any apsc lens.

    • @agoniavr
      @agoniavr Před 2 lety +3

      I had the 30mm 1.4 and wanted to use it as my only lens for my A6000 but I returned it and will try the 56mm 1.4 next for the same reason. The 30mm can do everything and can actually be used as your only lens, but I had the feeling that it didn't had character.
      Seeing Stuart's pictures with it it's clear that I have to improve my photography and you can get way better results that what I had so far, but also seeing his 56mm shots the look makes you truly feel you're getting into the photo.
      Can't explain myself better but it just feels better to my eye. I'd still like to own the whole trio one day but for now I want to stick to one lens and improve with that and, doing solely portraits, I feel the subject separation you're talking about is exactly what draws me to this lens more than the 30mm :)

    Nice video. Recently bought the zv-e10. Came with the kit lens and Sony 50mm-210mm zoom lens. Both are decent but not the best for indoors where the environment isn't well lit or low light as the images come out noisy. Your FOV comparison video with the Sigma trio is also very helpful. I recently got the 16 and 56, just days after my a6100. I got the 16 mainly for guitar-videos. While it does take awesome pictures I simply craved the 56, as I knew it would fit my style of photography perfectly. Because of it’s size it makes a cute and small setup with the a6100, yet packing a serious punch. For street photography it’s amazing so if that’s your style, just get it and you won’t regret it!

      @@enmachs Optically, it’s the better lens. If you like to include more of the surroundings the 23mm is perfect as it’s a 35mm FF-equivalent, typical for street photography and environmental portraits. With both of these, you can pretty much do anything.

    The 16mm has a hard competitor at least for the Canon M50: the Canon 22mm 2.0 that is tiny, lighter, cheaper and excellent too. I own the 56mm and I am impressed by the quality of the images, but used to take photos with a 22mm or a 15-45mm I need to change the way I work as I need to increase the speed and grab the camera specially firmly or I can get a blurry image more times than I would like. So for me the 56mm is challenging, but satisfying.

    My low budget setup plan would be to use the kit lens if ever I want to try vlogging since I don't really feel that its worth spending for the extra sharpness for a shakier video and save my money for a good prime in the area of 23-30mm in which this sigma 30 is a great candidate for.

    I have this trio for both Sony and MFT. Great on both formats, but because the focal length equivalents are different, the way they are used is also different. On MFT they are 32mm, 60mm, and 112mm. The 30 is my least favorite because it is too heavy. The 56 is my favorite. A fantastic portrait lens on both formats.

    56mm is my favourite but if you have none, start with the 30mm. You can get some wider shots and also portraits with DOF. 16mm is 24mm in FF land - quite wide and 56mm is very tight and a perfect 85mm equivalent.

I go for the 56mm because i want to have a compact lens for motorcycle photography and i think that it is the best. Later i will buy the 35mm Sony because of the OSS for Videos. If the Sigma 30mm would have stabilization i would take only that lens, but this is not the case. The 56mm will be a blast and will be perfekt next to my 18-105 Allrounder😊👍

    I'm currently looking to get my first real camera and your point on the 16mm looking to close to a smartphone angle is exactly what I thought. If I want decently sharp wide angle photos, a smartphone can do that. Now of course, with a little bit of skill, you can make better photos on a camera with a 16mm lens, but the larger focal lengths are where the looks are created that you cannot get on a smartphone. And BIG THANK YOU for that comparison shot at 9:07, watched a lot of videos about lenses by now and this one shows the difference off the best.

    • @marc_likes_stuff
      @marc_likes_stuff Před 4 měsíci

      a smartphone can nail a lot of what a 16mm can do, if you just want basic landscapes. however, if you want your shallow DOF in a distant region, with heavy bokeh in the foreground, or you want the pic focused on an object that is literally inches from your eyes, that is where the 16mm shines. but he's right in that the 30mm is extremely versatile. don't have your 16mm? just step back a bit. don't have your 56mm, just get a bit closer. fantastic lens.

Pity that sigma still don't have 23 f 1.4. Updated from my old a6000 to a6600. Yes it's expensive, yes IBIS is more likely uselesss. But battery life is outstanding. I would totally get the 30 for my Olympus but unfortunately the micro four thirds version isn't weather sealed. For some reason the L and the X mount versions are the only ones that are weather sealed. The 50 is weather sealed for all mounts.

    My holy trinity of primes would be 35, 85, and 135mm. 35 is the widest befor leading lines and distortion, 85 can render better than a 50 and the 135 for the ultimate separation.

    If on Full frame:
    Get 30mm for Landscapes/Cityscapes/ vlogging.
    16mm for super wide.
    Apsc:
    16mm for Landscapes / vlogging etc..Will be equivalent of 24mm

      I wouldn’t use APSC lenses on a fill frame camera. The vignette is bad or you have to shoot cropped and you lose megapixels.

    Bought the sigma 10-18 for my first lens for a6700 for my recent trip to Dubai. Perfect lens for all the architecture pics. The 30 and 56mm seem like nice additions but I think I want a bit more flexible zoom range to make it easier to travel. Tamron 18-300mm might fit the bill. Not as sharp unfortunately.

    This video made me choose 30mm first, then 56mm, then maybe later 16mm because vlogging isn't my thing yet. Hopefully the 30mm is good enough for travel photos. I would have to just stand far away.

    The Beauty about these lenses, are you can get all three for the same price as one prime (insert brand here) pro lens… Ex: as a µ4/3 user, the Lumix G Leica 12mm/1.4 cost over twelve hundred… Optically, they are also just a good…

    Really great video, Stuart!
    I have the 30mm lens and love it. I mostly take snaps of my family, especially my two year old son. Now that he's so mobile and never stops moving, I was thinking of getting a zoom lens but now I'm tempted to get the 56mm instead. As I say, the 30mm is great but I find I have to get too close to him and chase him round to get them nice portraits. I'm thinking the 56 will offer a bit more separation and candid style pics.
    Would be grateful to know your thoughts.
    Shooting on a canon m50 BTW.
    Thanks!
    Ben

    Saying my preferred lens doesn't reall make sense cause each lens got its on application. Of course the 30mm (45 in full frame) is the most useful but if for instance you need a panoramic with or witout a subject in the middle or to film a public in a small theater or in class room and have everybody inside the frame or simply want to shoot interior the 16 mm is the best option is not as good as a wide angle but still better than a 30mm. The 56 is less versatile but is the best lens. I filmed myself and without colour grading no one of my full frame users friends could believe was shot with a cropped sensor. Maybe in that particolar video I was lucky with my choice of lighting but without any doubt is an amazing lens with an exceptional depth of field. If u have the space Nd u can go back that extra metre or 2 the 56mm is better than the 56 but is just so much easier if u use only one camera wit one lens to keep the 30 mm on.

    • @DarioSinger
      @DarioSinger Před 7 dny

      You were no lucky. Maybe good, but not lucky. 3 years ago I used my a6400 with a Sigma 56mm on a tripod to shoot a video of myself singing "Jingle bells" and pros using full ftame couldn't believe that was shot on crop sensor.
