Remove Background Noise from Audio (How to Get Rid of Hiss!)

- How do you remove hiss in your audio that comes from recording in places that are less than perfect audio and video productions? Try this noise removal plugin from Accusonus podhelp.me/AccusonusNoiseRemover. For the last year, this has been my favorite way of polishing audio to sound like it was recorded in a noiseless studio.
Because the places that most content creators (podcasters, CZcamsrs, etc.) record audio can have background noise from outside, HVAC, computer or hard drive fans, etc., the final production will usually benefit from some amount of noise removal.
The one problem is that noise removal plugins often turn your audio into something worse than where it started. However, over the last year, I've used the Accusonus Noise Removal plugin to clean up my audio productions with the most transparent results I've heard to date. It can clean up a considerable amount of background noise floor (hiss) without making your voice sound like it's underwater or robotic.
Accusonus gave me a license to use their plugins about a year ago and I waited all that time to talk about them in a video so that I could use them in my productions. I've been very happy with the results which seem to be even better than my previous favorite from iZotope which is still also really good.
One advantage of the iZoptope RX pack is you get standalone software for processing your audio so that you don't need a DAW. The Accusonus plugin will require you to have a DAW that allows you to use VST plugins but even free DAWs allow for this so it's not that much of a barrier and if you are post producing your audio you are likely using something that will allow you to use this plugin.
But don't just buy based on what I have to say, you have to try it for yourself and see if it works for your needs! You can get a fully functioning trial here:

Looks like the business is ending, or as they call it “sunsetting”.
Oh, shoot! Thanks for the heads-up, looks like you're right. That's a real bummer! Fortunately I mention my other favorite noise removal tool, iZotope. There's another, not so known fact, that Accusonus licensed this software to Adobe so Adobe is using, at least some, of their tech in their noise removal tools and I've noticed it's gotten really good. I don't know if this affects this but that's another alternative. The Accusonus tool is so good that hopefully it will keep working for a long time beyond the company existing. We'll see!
@@RayOrtega So, where can we find comparable success within Adobe Audition if they've licensed it? I've tried everything (except what actually works ha ha!) to remove cassette hiss (if that's what it is) including up-to-date Audition and buying Izotope RX9 Standard, which for all the hoopla, it's devastating it doesn't just wipe something seemingly so simple right down to silence without effecting the voices.
@@jasonlscarabin It's just the native noise removal tool inside Audition. Sadly though if iZotope is not doing what you need, you're unlikely to get much better results. Noise removal is a such a hard thing because you are tossing out frequencies and if the tape hiss is too broadband in it's frequency response, it just might affect the voice too much. It's also kind of an art so you have to mess with it a bunch sometimes and many times have to find a compromise. It's more forgiving in dialog only situations than music vocals.
Thanks for the advice…i rewatched not because I needed to hear the information again but your voice sounds extremely soothing 🙂 awesome ❤️
Very cool! This is really helpful tips. Thank you! :)
Ray....I think I've been looking for you for a long long time now lol. Post production has been a bit of a nightmare lately. Strange noise from my blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k and I believe you just showed me the light at the end of the tunnel. I can't wait to try it out, thank you thank you.
Wonderful! Welcome ;) I hope this helps with the issues you're having, let me know! ps "COVID Order" was pretty funny, keep it up.
@@RayOrtega oh man! Thanks for checking it out lol.
THIS PRODUCT WAS A GREAT FIND!!!
I have no vested interest or affiliation in this product or the or the guy in this video, but I can honestly say, the guy in this video, "He Speakem' truth". Plus you get a 14 day trial to check it out, although you have to give your credit card info and cancel before 14 days and there is always that risk you can forget to cancel. But after 10 minutes of trying this plugin on some problem sections of my vocals, I know I'll be purchasing.
What's most important, is whatever this plugin is doing in the background, my voice is not being altered or stripped down in any [noticeable] way. Voice sounds the same, less the background noise.
Such a great find for me!!! What a Studio engineer I'm becoming!!!
Thanks, Doug. I really is that good, something I use in each production if it noise is minimal it's just that nice polish and good points about the trial. Thanks for watching.
@@RayOrtega Yeah thank you. I have several great plugins, but I must say this is the if first plugin I rate as a "must have" plugin for anyone recording amateur vocals outside of a professional studio.
This is great. Thanks Ray 💪🏼
Thanks!
Hi sir, thank you for this information, please help me I'm using BOYA mic and I'm having audio difficulties whenever I record video there's this sound at the background like it's raining , do you think i have a problem with settings on my camera or I should change the brand ? Because I plug it in to the camera yet, thank you 🙏
Thanks Ray you saved me!
How do I use my uploaded CZcams videos to remove hissing AF lens sounds in them?
Can you please do a video on how to get of taps when recording when can't rid of the taps if you tap too loud
I am new to music. How do I found how many decibels my noise floor is in my room.
I got that exact same sound on my Yamaha hs8 speakers, can you get rid of it with this method?
Is this compatible with Cubase pro? Also, where in the signal chain do you recommend putting the plug-in? I’m thinking up front?
wont skip just want to support you
Yh nice👍and can this be done on phone?🙄
awesome man , greeting from taiwan . i want to try it
hey ray,
this is so good man, my noise floor is always at -40 range after raising the audio gain to get my vocals around -3
is this normal for the noise floor to always be at that -40 range? or maybe im doing something wrong
Thanks Ray!
Thanks! There are many reasons why you might have noise but the first thing I would tell you to do is to not record so hot. Or maybe you mean when you peak normalize your vocal on post production, then you get a loud noise floor? What is your recording setup/gear? It could be your gear but more likely your environment but let me know what you're using and any other details in your recording setup. Also if you have sample audio here on CZcams, link me so I can hear the type of noise.
@@RayOrtega oh yeah, before normalizing the vocal in post, the noise floor is sitting at like -53 to -58 db and after raising the gain so that my vocals will sit at -6 range, the noise floor goes to -40 ish db
i am using a tascam dr 100 miii and the deity s mic 2 shotgun mic,
thanks man
If people Are use something similar to background noise to tick you off how would you detect it?
it didnt load with garageband.....i couldn't find the right bundle files to add to the library folder - anyone have this issue?
I have had decent results with NS1, but tend to use spectral noise removal by iZotope nowadays.
Hi Ray, What type of voice recording microphone do you personally recommend? Can you suggest any with good noise cancelling features?
I change mics all the time, right now I'm using the Shure M7X amzn.to/3pC64lJ that I just reviewed (latest video czcams.com/video/KgDbNec6lqY/video.html) but I also really like my SM7B. I wouldn't say any of them cancel noise but any dynamic cardioid is going to reject more of the background and a little reverb.
Great Video Ray. Would the Noise Remover be the same as a software based Noise Gate? I like to use a software based Noise Gate effect to get rid of my breaths in between words.
Could I use this Noise Remover plug in to achieve the same results?
Thanks, Shawn. It's definitely different than a gate which operates in the parts of your audio that don't have a vocal whereas the noise removal plugin removes a specified amount of "noise" from a section of the file or the whole thing. If you had noise in a recording and applied a gate only, the noise would still be there when you are speaking.
As for breaths, they are probably too strong to remove using noise removal because it may affect too much of the frequency that your voice sits in. Hard to say based on many factors. iZotope has a de-breath plugin that can do a decent job but it's tricky cause it may not always work over the course of a long recording like a 30 min podcast. Honestly training your breath is the best solution although I know it's not a quick fix but things like breaths, tongue clicks, lip smacks etc are really one of those things that are best worked on over time. I taught myself to be quiet instead of inserting an 'um' or slowing down which has the same effect. Takes time but worth it. Hope some of that is helpful!
Thanks for making and sharing this video.
I have more of an Audio interface White noise issue than ambient noise. What audio interface do you plug your SM7B into ? (I couldn't see in the video or the description)
Thanks. Currently I use the Rodecaster v1 with my SM7B but I pair it with a Fethead czcams.com/video/LSxXQ7SIc6g/video.html (old video but this is the preamp) which is an inline preamp for audio interfaces that don't have enough clean gain and mics like the SM7B and you can get one here: podhelp.me/fetheadBH. other people also use a Cloudlifter or you can clean your audio in post like the video above.
@@RayOrtega awesome! Thanks for the info. 😊👍
Is there a way to get my laptop fan to stop running to aggressively? Thanks,
There is software that can let you take manual control over your fan speed. Of course you have to be careful not to overheat your computer but you can look into these and see if they can help.
The product is not available anymore... what can we use now? Is there something I can use through FL Studio, I tried Edison but the noise remover seems very basic
I don't know enough about FL Studio but I also use iZotope Dialog DeNoise in the RX or Standard version which I talk about in the beginning of this video at :25 and is linked in the description
Ray, would you possible know how to fix on live streaming? We usually stream with a camcorder Canon Vixia (no problem there) but we got a Sony Alpha 6400 beautiful picture quality, poor audio 😩! Lots of hiss noice, (we have an audio mixer feeding the audio for the streaming.)
Thank you in advance, God bless you !
First step is to determine where the hiss is coming from. Plug the mixer into something else like the computer or even headphones and see if the hiss is there. If yes then remove things from the mixer one at a time to find what is causing it. If there is no hiss from the mixer then the issue is at the camera. Your line level output might be too loud for the Sony and you need an attenuator to reduce the level going on. Try taking the level on the Sony all the way down to 1 and check the meters.
@@RayOrtega thank you!!! I didn’t notice you replied 😅!
I’ve plugged the cámara to two different mixers one of them only had one mic 🎤. I will lower the level on the camera 📷 to see if that helps.
Thank you for replying back!!!
I see they mention Audacity on MacOS. Any idea if it works on Audacity on Windows?
I do most of the main editing these days in Mixcraft, but could run the final edit through Audacity if this works.
Will check myself later this week after returning from vacation.
Kevin they show that it works with Audacity and I see an installer for Windows on this page. See if you can get a trial so that you can make sure. podhelp.me/AccusonusNoiseRemover
This sounds great! Do you know if this or anything like this works after the fact? I have 3 episodes of a storytelling podcast with fuzz from a bad mic. I am considering writing up a narration, but it would be so much better if i could do this on what i already have recorded.
Yes. What you see in this video is my post processing recorded audio. So you can remove noise from already recorded audio.
I subscribed.
Can you do a tutorial on the free software from NCH called WavePad. I like the idea of NCH Software because it doesn't slow down my computer and seems to have alot of options, considering it's totally free. Problem is, I am such a novice, I don't understand how to use that program.
Wow🙏🏼
What's a noise floor? Also, are you using this plugin to get rid of hiss from existing recordings? Or, can it only be done as you are recording?
Can be done on any recording after the fact and a noise floor is anything that is noise in your recording that isn't your voice. Not exactly correct but that's the idea as in what is the noise floor of your room that you are recording in. Usually there is some kind of hiss like white noise to most rooms or the gear you are using will produce some level of noise, it's a combo of the two that will be your noise floor.
when you say you have loudness normalized this audio to -20 db what do you mean by that?
The audio has been averaged to a level of -20LUFS which is a standard based on how humans perceived the level of audio. You can dive deep in my two part interview about it here thepodcastersstudio.com/tps085-auphonic-and-loudness-standards-with-georg-holzmann/ and then thepodcastersstudio.com/tps086-loudness-normalization-with-georg-from-auphonic-part-2/
Hey Ray, is there anything like this available for streming audio? So instead of post production there is real time background noise reduction?
Yes, I started making a video about it some time ago and not sure what happened lol. But you can use this plugin or likely most like, in real time!
Hey Ray, love this tutorial! But my issue seems to be different. The hissing noise that Im getting is from any sound I use from my keyboard. It's not a recorded back-round hiss, but it's the hiss of the gain in the high end. What would you do??? Please help. Yes, a lot of the noise goes away if I lower the high band of the eq, but then it flattens and muffles the sound as a whole. It's horrible. Any suggestions???
Thanks, Charles. Music is tough because, as you've mentioned, the more you do to the audio, the more it reduces the frequency response and degrades the music. If you have a section where there is only that hiss sound, I would isolate it and then try to remove it surgically with these tools. Otherwise you just have to run a noise remover and try to find a balance between noise reduction and the sound of the music. Definitely try to find the source of the noise and fix that so that you don't have the issue in the future. Thanks for watching!
but i really enjoy this video su much
It’s not working why? I’ve tried, it only says sing in, not sign up.. I’m confused.. pls help. Thanks
What program is he using to enable the plugin? Sorry
Everything I use for each video is linked in the description...in this case, I'm Adobe Audition with the Accusonus plugin.
@@RayOrtega thanks for the reply have a nice day
Hi! I’m a small CZcamsr and I have some sort of buzzing noise when I record? It isn’t any background noise and I don’t know how to fix it. I’m very new to recording on CZcams. Do you mind helping me?
Link me to a video where I can hear the noise please or upload something with the noise and make it Unlisted and link me and I'll see what I can do to help.
Is there a way to do it without buying anything?
Depends on the software you are using to edit. Some, like Adobe Premiere and FCP have some decent noise removal built in.
It doesn't work and it erases my audio with Final Cut Pro :/
But the voice changes
How to get rid of that diminished Audio after applying noise removal
Voice sounds like under water
I talk about that in the video, see around 5:19 about using EQ to bring back the presence
Sadly I couldn't hear any differences, clearly at my age I'm not going to get a job as an audio engineer. :(
Did you use headphones? Makes all the difference.
@@RayOrtega Yes, it's even worst, I WAS wearing headphones :( Mind you I have a pc fan next to me on the desk. I don't doubt what you were saying, I think it's just an indication of age I'm afraid.
@@twotone3070 ha ok, well if you're processing your own audio, you can use the audio meters to help with the 'invisible' audio too, just aim for the targets I set here in the video for a noise floor. Or don't sweat it, if it sounds good to you and there are no complaints, roll with it! Just have fun and stay well;)
