  • How do you get rid of hiss in your audio without destroying the speech? iZotope DeNoise is my favorite solution || linked below. See all my gear at kit.co/rayortega

    When you record audio for your podcast or video production, there is almost always some kind of noise floor. In many cases, you may not want any of this noise, often referred to as hiss, to be heard in your audio.
    There are free solutions in Audacity, Audition (which has become almost as good as DeNoise) and other apps with noise reduction plugins but nothing has done a better job for me as iZotope's DeNoise podhelp.me/izRXEl7BH and it doesn't have to be expensive. I picked up the RX Elements pack for $10 on a super sale (keep watch for these which I always tweet via / podcasthelper . But even the regular price is a good deal for what you get... a noise reduction plugin that usually works like magic for me.
    I can remove heavy amounts of background noise (refrigerators, fans, street noise, etc.) with almost no degradation of the dialog. At worse, the recorded audio can become "muddy" stripping out some of the higher frequencies however I this can be corrected for with an EQ (shown in the video).
    To use DeNoise to it's fullest, select your noise floor, activate the "Adaptive Mode," loop that section of audio so it can play while you listen with headphones to the reduction in noise as you increase the Noise Reduction slider until the noise is low enough of eliminated.
    Deselect Adaptive mode and your noise sample and apply to the entire file. That's it. Enjoy your audio that sounds like it was recorded in a studio..well if you have a decent mic and room treatment 😀

    Great demo man! I actually use this in my vocal recording chain for my home studio. I keep it on adaptive just because my AC turns on sometimes during sessions but I change the algorithm from surgical to gentle to keep the original performance in tact better. • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před rokem +1

      Thanks. The battle I always fight is usually with myself. When we edit the audio, we hear it as it was recorded and so yes, we hear a difference in the denoised option however if you've never heard the audio (the audience), in most cases, they would never know. So it really is a balance between our own bias and perfection and just publishing a good product. We hear many productions that have been processed and think wow how did they do that and the answer is they did what we'd do but we just never heard the original;) So don't fight yourself too hard.

      Thanks and yes, a gate has a different purpose and in this case you want the noise gone. With a gate the noise is suppressed only when someone on that channel is not talking. That is good for very low level noise that isn't noticeable when speaking. So sometimes a combo is really effective. Remove some of the louder noise then gate the rest. Stay well.

    I would have been interested in seeing a comparison of the free built in noise reduction of Audacity (or Audition in your case) vs this plug in. I have a tough time seeing the added benefit (over the built in functionality) for the tune of $100+ dollars vs. what I'm getting free with Audacity. The adaptive piece is pretty trick but if the noise you're trying to remove is from the same consistent source (a fan in your example) I don't see the need for this adaptive feature. Thank you though for taking the time showing us this tip.

      Originally I recorded this video to include the Noise Reduction in Audition however the video was way too long. So I'm breaking that into its own video to include Audacity. And while I think Audacity does a decent job it doesn't really come close IMO to iZotope. First off plugins in Audacity are horrible cause you can't see what they are actually doing, just makes the work much more finicky. But beyond UI, you'll get the artifacts of noise reduction much sooner than you'll get them with DeNoise and it's not as good at scrubbing the noise under dialog. But yes, it's a good place to start. And with this plugin, you wait until they have at least one of the two sales that I share every year...$10! It's a no brainer. I waited;)
      As for Noise Reduction in Audition, that is where things got interesting. It's always been pretty good, maybe a little better than Audacity but never got to the level of DeNoise IMO. However, as I recorded that piece I mentioned, I noticed it had taken a big leap in quality with the new 2019 release and word is they licensed some tech that rivals iZotope but they didn't really announce it. So now, I think it's almost as good if not equal and when I make that video I will check that out further and make a determination but again at $10, you can't go wrong with the RX pack you get which also includes tools you can't get in Audition or Audacity and while you wait for the sale, those two tools will work fine. Thanks for watching.

    Would love your advice on this, I have a metal heart valve implant that makes a metallic click sound with every heart beat and it is VERY prominent on audio recording - I used to be an actor but I stopped because this would show on all my audition tapes. Do you think that this could be easily removed with a professional audio team during post production editing?

      @RayOrtega  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi, James. I was able to find your demo reel and in the first scene, I can definitely hear what you're talking about. It's amazing to me that the movement of the metal valve goes so fast! I ripped the file and tried to do some work on removing the sound. I was definitely able to reduce it with the tools I have and short time I worked on it so I'm sure a professional post house would be able to remove it. I was surprised that the sound seems to be fairly broadband, extending through more of the frequency range that I would of thought. I was hoping it was hoping it was a more specific frequency that I could remove. Hopefully a pro team would have even better tools to isolate it and remove. Hope that helps, good luck and let me know if you pursue acting again and this comes up!

      iZotope is fantastic and for the last year, for noise removal, I've been using the Accusonus plugin for noise podhelp.me/AccusonusNoiseRemover (affiliate link) it's even more transparent but you have less control over the settings. Both are stellar

    How do I remove hissing Autofocus lens noises in my recorded videos?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 3 lety

      That's going to be tough cause a plugin is probably not going to recognize it as background noise in the way it would 'hiss' but depending on your DAW, you can go into a spectral analyzer (like in Audition) and see the noise visually and then you may be able to remove it that way or know what frequencies you can removed with a notch filter etc.

      Do you mean for live-streaming or doing something like a Zoom call? Regardless of your use case, yes. I need to make a video showing it working in real-time.

      @@RayOrtega I am just been learning and still very new at this process since sat about recording and cleaning up audio
      Here is my main goal to record Found Sounds like scratches ,water drop and tapping on glass etc...
      and Then clean the audio sample up good enough to be useable for seamless looping backgrounds,for samplers to be play on midi keyboard etc..
      My Recording Device is my old iPhone 6 Plus not much but it all I have at this time Looking to later get a better iphone mic adapter
      and using a app called Voice Recorder Pro that has a Recording Format M4C (AAC) MP3 (MPEG)
      and the one I am going to start useing
      WAV (PCM because this one I can set the sample rate as high as 96Khz
      Bit Depth is at 24 Bits and got up to 32 Bits
      More to work with when editing audio
      My question is do You have any tips from all Your experiences to give me to create a workflow ?

    Can we use this on music files

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 3 lety

      Yes but it will probably have a more negative affect simply cause you'll be losing some of the frequencies or messing with parts of the frequency range that has music in it. Just depends on how much you need, it might help some if only a little is needed. Also working on individual tracks would be better than applying to a mix

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 2 lety +1

      It depends on the amount you apply and the background noise being removed. I don't use this for singing, this is for dialog and you can see in this video how a little does the trick but doesn't affect my dialog but when it does, it will usually remove some high-end so you also see me put that back in with EQ. It's an art and every situation will be different and you have to dial it in and adjust but this is the most transparent noise removal that I've used to date.

    that is noise? :)))), nice job indeed but the real life is more demanding on tehniques to remove the noise, i wanna send u a sample to see

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 4 lety

      Yes, hiss would be noise but you have to be careful not to confuse noise created by mics., preamps or other gear or maybe even HVAC and background sounds that would be environmental like cars, people, etc. Software like this is not necessarily intended to clean up backgrounds that have a lot of other ambience. The key is to set yourself up so that you do not have those distractions in the first place and whatever low level noise floor is left can be cleaned up with software. If you have noise that is significantly louder that what I am showing then you have to deal with that first otherwise trying to remove it in post will degrade your primary audio. Thanks for watching, if you have a sample you want me to hear, just upload it her to CZcams, make it Unlisted and send me the link.

    • @Hzuuuu
      @Hzuuuu Před 4 lety

      @@TheSakanaburu This is way too extreme. 10dB Threshold and 25dB Reduction is going to destroy the recording without a doubt. Not a good demonstration of the product considering the noise in the recording is not that loud to begin with, but the technique shown here could help anyone that needed to push it to that kind of extreme.

      @RayOrtega  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks, again as stated in the video, this was pushing it at it's hardest to demonstrate that even doing that doesn't produce bad results, you just need to EQ after however in most cases you would not push it that far and I don't suggest doing so. If it can sound very usable and full, it does a stellar job at half power or less. Thanks for watching.
