- How do you use a multichannel audio interface with Skype and other VOIP apps when many only take one channel? Use a free app to create a mono input! See all my gear at kit.co/rayortega & listed below.

If you want to use Skype with an audio interface like a Focusrite, a mixer that sends separate channels via USB or an audio recorder that records to individual tracks but can also function as an interface like the Zoom H6, and you need more than one microphone to be "heard" by Skype (podcast co-host, interviewee, etc) then you have a problem. Skype and other VOIP apps often only accept one channel of audio. This is usually channel one on your interface or the left side of a stereo output.
To make this work, I've found a series of apps that will allow you to combine these discrete channels into a single mono input for Skype and other apps that have microphone inputs.
If you're on a mac, regardless of which app you choose, you'll need a free app called Soundflower to act as the input for all other channels. While Soundflower is no longer and app, it's an extension for mac that will show up as an input when using VOIP apps like Skype. This is what you will choose as your microphone input in those apps. The other app you'll use, to combine the channels, will output all the audio to Soundflower and thus create a single channel for VOIP.
Soundflower: github.com/mattingalls/Soundf... (read the instructions about how to install on your mac as it can require you to create permissions on your computer).
If Soundflower is not working for you, try Blackhole existential.audio/blackhole/
The app I used in this video to combine channels from the Scarlett 2i4 is available for free in the App Store: LadioCast itunes.apple.com/us/app/ladio...
Other apps you could use on a mac include:
Loopback: rogueamoeba.com/loopback/
Audio HiJack: rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
SoundSource: rogueamoeba.com/soundsource/
If you're on a PC (Windows) you can use VoiceMeeter www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/ which also includes VoiceMeeter Banana for more functionality and Virtual Audio Cables. I don't have a Windows PC at this time to test these so let me know which works best for you.

Love this content! Directing many other musician friends who are teaching during coronavirus to you. Thank you!
You saved me today. Had to do a podcast interview where I played piano and sang. SO glad I didnât have to use the built in mic to my Mac. Easy and clear instructions. Iâll share the crap out of this video! đđŒ
Aimee, thanks and glad this helped! Appreciate all the (đ©-y) shares đ
the answer that I was looking for. I really wanted to sing with my guitar over video chat like zoom, skype and etc, but I could not find a straightforward answer until your video! thank you!
You are my hero! I was trying to figure out how to use my Focusrite 2i4 and mic over Skype, and this works perfectly. Thank you!
Cool! So glad this worked and you found this video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Had my first online lesson last week, you saved me, thank you very much!! đđŒ
Normally don't leave comments but you just saved my life an hour before a live presentation on Webex (which has the same issue with only being able to read input 1 on a multi-channel interface), not many vids on this specific topic so thank you so much
Hey thanks for the feedback, glad this solved it for you, just in time!
What a lifesaver! My guitar teacher can now hear me talk and play over skype during the corona virus lockdown. Thanks so much!
By the way, the most recent version of Soundflower that I could find is here on Github: github.com/mattingalls/Soundflower/releases/download/2.0b2/Soundflower-2.0b2.dmg
Confirmed working on 2019 MBP with Mojave.
Amazing, thanks for this video Ray. About to start teaching all of my guitar lessons on Skype. So helpful! You are going to help a lot of people out over the coming weeks and months!
Thanks, Aengus. I definitely wasn't planning for a pandemic situation but glad it may help even a little! Good luck with your lessons, I just picked up the bass a year ago and I'm loving it.
@@RayOrtega That's great, well you will have lots of time to practice now haha! Enjoy it, and thanks again!
OMG! You saved me! Was trying to do a Zoom call, but my M-Audio 192 | 6 wouldn't receive input through zoom so that I could hear other callers through my monitoring headphones that were plugged into the interface. Voice Meter is INCREDIBLE.
That was a huge help. Thanks!! The combination of those two apps is exactly what I needed.
Super, glad this worked for you!
Thanks Ray. I really appreciate your advice. I belong to a non-profit organization that is interested in starting a podcast. This information has been enormously helpful.
My pleasure. My advice would be to simplify the process. Don't over think it, try to do the simplest production possible and then grow from there. I saw your comment on another video where the person showed their setup with a mixer and H6 and there were several things wrong with their advice. For starters, for what he was showing, you don't even need the mixer when you have an H6. So many people will waste money on setup on following that advice.
That WAS extremely helpful to me, thanks Ray! I was stumped when I saw that the Focusrite software didn't support Output Routing for the Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen, but you sorted me out!
Thanks, Andrew. So glad this helped!
This helped me out a great deal. I am subscribing in case you do any other videos that help me out. I had never heard of the software you mentioned in your description. Thank you very much Ray.
Thanks, Resto, appreciate the sub and compliments!
Thanks so much for this video Ray, it's been a real help. It's been getting tougher and tougher to hold on to students over the past few weeks. I'm hoping that the ability to give Skype lessons with above-average sound quality (using good mics through an interface) will allow me to keep more of them and maybe even attract a few new students. Fingers crossed! Thanks again.
Glad this helped! Good luck to you, stay safe and healthy!
This is so awesome man! Thanks for this, posted a little over two years ago, but still helping people! Thank you
Thanks, Robert!
This was of great help, thanks!
Just 2 things to note:
1) Soundflower doesn't seem to work on OS X Catalina. BlackHole works as an alternative.
2) In Ladiocast you can just use one input (the interface), and select both channels directly as L and R. No need to have a second duplicate input.
THANK YOU! Definitely the best video out there for this! After 3 hours of Youtubing, you saved my sanity.
I've been looking for a solution for a while! I already knew about Voicemeter Banana, but I didn't understand that common applications didn't use channel 2, only channel 1. Now I understand what's happening and I can make better use of my interface... Thank you very much for sharing this information!
Thank you, this was extremely helpful. I'm a guitar teacher from Belgium, trying to keep lessons going during the lockdown. Couldn't figure out why Skype is only seeing the first input of my interface. I used a mixer to combine sources for a few days, but this made the process so much simpler. I'll pass on the word to all my fellow teachers ! How could you know, over one year ago, when you posted this video, that it was gonna help a lot of people to keep their job during this strange time. That is kind of beautiful.
On the video side, I tried to improve my video quality by using a DSLR (T5i) instead of the macbook's webcam. I had to use two softwares, Camera Live and CamTwist, to be able to use it with Skype. Unfortunately the video quality is really low and unusable. Strangely it's great when I use the EOS Utility software from Canon, but as soon as I use it with Skype, the quality drops. I have a good internet connection (wired with an ethernet cable). I gave up, thinking my camera is probably too old to do the job, but maybe you know something about this issue? I'm gonna browse your channel to see if you already covered this subject !
Thank you again for sharing this tip, you are my hero today. Hope everything is good for you, stay safe !
Hi, Bruno, glad you found this video and yes seeing it surge in views due to COVID has been both a surprise and pleasure...not exactly what I was planning for lol! Really happy that it helps in any little way and glad to hear you're staying inside. I'm on lockdown here too, one week in.
As for the video, it could just be Skype. I do have some vids on here which you may have found about using your Canon DSLR as a webcam and with some of the stuff you found. One suggestion would be to try something other than Skype. Look at StreamYard.com, they have a free plan and I'm really enjoying it.
@@RayOrtega Hey Ray, thank you for the reply. I found the solution for the video ! I had to set the video resolution and the frame rate manually in CamTwist's preference menu, that's it ! This made me think: tutorial videos on the internet are like the GPS in your car, easy steps but you might forget to think outside of those steps and follow them blindly.
Keep up the good work and stay safe !
OMG!!! The solution I was searching for... Best CZcams Channel ever!!!
That's great! It's one thing to make the video, it's another for people to actually find it when they are trying to solve this issue. Glad the title worked!
wow. Thank you. NO ONE else ever said that Skype only uses channel 1! Saved me!
I used Blackhole instead of Soundflower (also on a Mac) but had missed a vital piece of information to make this work until I watched your video. Thanks!
Yes this is the second time I've heard about Blackhole. I haven't tried it yet but it seems to be the solution if Soundflower isn't working. Thanks for the feedback.
Extremely helpful! Needed audio from my microphone and bass plugged into the audio interface for online lessons on Skype. Thank you!
Glad this helped! I'm also a bass player so that's an extra bonus! ;)
Thank you!!!! Drummer here teaching lessons over Skype during the corona virus. This helped me get my drum mics and a talk back mic into Skype. Thanks!!!!!
Hey that's really cool, keep up the good work and stay well!
J.A. Mena are you using a Ethernet connection to your internet? That will help the most with the quality, but the latency will never be good enough to play together in time with your student.
Iâve been modifying my teaching techniques away from playing together and doing more call and response. Iâm also looking for the types of lessons that fit best, so spending time on the psychology of drumming and âhow to thinkâ about things.
Good luck!
Michael Enriquez did you use Sound Flower and Ladiocast too? On your MAC?
Christian Canalita yes I used an Spindflower and laddiocast on my old ass MacBook
Exactly what IÂŽve searched for! God bless you!
Thank you ray ... you're phenomenal. From your videos over the years, I've learned how to record audio into my Canon 70D ... as well as numerous other twerks that no one else answered on youtube (I've watched many of your videos ... many times). This is going to be another one of those videos as I have a closet full of xlr mics, just ordered a focusrite so I could use two channels with Skype and Zoom, and then found out the programs only accept one input. ... Again ... thanks.
So glad this worked for you! There are some apps that will recognize the two channels like Zencastr.com I believe but not all do so this is a decent hack when needed. And thanks so much for all the kind words!
Well produced video! you can clearly see how much effort you put into it :)
Thanks! I really appreciate it, each vid is definitely a lot of work but I love making them and helping others get answers to the same questions I have.
This is what i was looking for!! Thank you so much! đ More power!
i was looking for a solution for my problem for many hours and thanks to you i found it!!! I was traying to but my DAW as input in skype so my students can hear a mix of my microphone and instrument with eq compressor etc but skype was automaticly muteing my input signal in soundflower... but now, thanks to ladiocast everything is working fine!!!
That's great news! Really happy this helped, thanks for sharing!
This worked for me on my Mac using the two-channel version of Soundhole in conjunction with LasioCast. I had to fiddle with the settings within Skype a little but I think the test was successful and hopefully it will work for my guitar lesson next Thursday.
Thank you so much for this video! Helped out a lot for my lessons over skype!
Thank you Ray! This is exactly was I was looking for :D
Glad this helped, Mariano.
Thank you so so much, I've been looking for this in order to teach my singing lessons via Zoom. Fingers crossed it'll work
Thanks I hope it's been working for you! If not check out the pinned comment that gives an alternative
Nice Man!! Your video came just in time. Bravo!
Thanks for the video it realy help me a lot !!! Been searching for info about this.
Thanks, Toze
Thanks Ray! Have been banging my head over this - it seems that the fancier your studio setup, the more problems you run into with Zoom and Skype. I have an M1 Silicon Mac Pro, which Soundflower doesn't support, but I can confirm that Blackhole + LadioCast works! Hooray!
Thanks for the feedback, Emily, glad this was helpful!
@@RayOrtega had some issues with the local sound on my computer being heard. My fix in the end (lessons over Skype requiring an audio interface with instrument line in and mic in , plus music backing tracks) was to route the backing track from my Mac headphone jack into the audio interface channel 3&4, then route those via LadioCast to BlackHole. It worked!
@@Factotum6814 Glad to hear you got it sorted, congrats!
That was super helpful! Got a Focusrite 18/20 and wanted to use ZenCastr. Was having a hell of a time trying to figure out why I wasn't getting a signal. Problem solved thanks to you!
Awesome! Zencastr is great, it should take inputs one and I think two but after that it's this method. Enjoy and thanks for watching and commenting!
@@RayOrtega Will do! My only problem with ZenCastr right now is audio drag. Have you experienced this or know how to stop it from happening?
@@mattgiovanisci Do you mean the audio files go out of sync? If so it appears to be a tricky issue and only SquadCast.fm has solved it so far. Or are you talking about something else?
This is a referral link btw if you want to check them out squadcast.fm/?salescamp=PGMtgm7oGHuShp4P42AbFvQg They're the first ones I've seen to solve the biggest issues that these double-ender systems have such as progressive upload and sync.
@@RayOrtega Dude, another win! Thanks for all the help, this is exactly what I was looking for :-)
Nice! I was wondering how to work around this. Good find!
This just saved me a ton of time. Thanks for this!
Bro can you do the video tutorial for windows please. đđ»
Thank you so much, I was struggling to find a solution!!!
thank you so much you are a life saver! since the corona i will be having online vocal lessons over skype and you just made my day and probably my teachers as well so she can hear me over studio mic and not over webcam xD TY! (oh the problem was, i wanted to plug in guitar into second channel)
thank you so very much for your sharing, just what I needed, well done
Thanks..worked perfectly using my new ssl2
We've got the Saffire Pro 40, and after trying this and another option, involving a cheap 4-channel mixer we also have, we ended up just sending the Saffire's headphone out to the mic input jack on the PC (haven't tried the blue line input jack, but that's next). Done. There's maybe 3/4 of a second delay/lag, but definitely something we can live with, and it sounds way better than just the mic on the webcam. We're running 5 drum mics, 1 overhead condenser, and another one for the drummer's voice through the Saffire and the Skype user on the other end can hear it all and the levels are mixed and controlled by the interface. Also, we disabled Skype's automatic handling of the audio and set the level ourselves to about 7.
Yes, any way you can combine a mix and send as a single track should work which is what I recommended above for a possible ipad option/hack. Glad you got what you needed!
Hi Ray. Thanks from Peckham Road Studio, London. Stay safe! Paul.
Thank you so much, this has been very helpful for my Zoom/Slack video call meeting!
Great, thanks for letting me know!
Lifesaver, thanks! This works for Microsoft Teams too. Using LadioCast on Mac with Teams :)
so what I needed to was unplug it from port 2 to port 1 LOL god dangit thank you! Easy and clear instructions!
Glad you got it worked out, thanks!
hey man, thank you!!! very helpful video...you deserve an Oscar!
Great Vid!!! So relevant right now. You have fixed Microsoft teams for me, thanks :)
Thanks!
Awesome Ray! Thank you!
This is super helpful! Thank you. Does LadioCast run in the background? And does the routing configuration persist? Or do you have to open it and set it up every time you want to use Soundflower as your input device?
thanks. All very clear!
This is great, Ray.
Thanks, Mike.
Many blessings upon you for delivering us from this strife. Seriously though Skype need to up their game
I would also suggest that you could use a mixer in front of your audio interface. That way regardless of how many inputs you require your Audio Interface would get the final mix as one signal.
Mic CH1/Guitar CH2/Bass CH3/Mic2 CH4 etc----->MIXER---(main out)--->Audio Interface CH1----(USB Output)--->PC--->Skype
A sincere thank you. Problem solved straight away.
Thank you, that was super helpful!
Glad this helped, Patrick, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks this really helped!
thank you very much for this amazing video. A specific question, im using the same hardware and software config as in your video but would like to link the sound of my logic pro to the main output so i can go live in FB or youtube using the sound of the Logic pro software for example, do you have any idea how this might work?
I just want to say @Ray Ortega Thank U đđœ very helpful
In my case with Sound Devices Mix-Pre 6 (or 3) thereâs a way to combine selected channels into one on the device itself and send it via USB to Skype and receive callerâs voice from Skype via USB input back to Mix-Pre as a separate channel. Basically, it does mix-minus out of the box. Super convenient and âfreeâ or at least less complicated and more reliable.
Yes I love the MixPre series and I will have one soon but I haven't seen where multiple inputs will be recognized by Skype. What is the setting for that? I know all the rest, how the USB goes to it's own channel and this is why you don't get loopback to Skype because Skype doesn't hear the channel 3 USB. I'll know more once I can test this for myself.
Ray Ortega I use it as 2 ins / 2 outs device for my Mac, not in multichannel mode. Once Mix-Pre is in advanced mode, I go to Settings > Outputs > St. Out Left/Right and send only inputs 1, 2, 3 to the left and right channels. Both channels are accessible from Skype. Input 4 is set up as USB 1 (you just press the knob and change input source) and I have Mix-Pre as an input and output device for OS sound. Now I can send 3 mics to Skype, receive and record Skype on channel 4 and send Skype + inputs 1, 2, 3 to headphone output where I have splitter.
@@pepelsbey Skype only picks up left side but since you are sending them left, that makes sense. And yes I've seen that ability but you lose multichannel at that point or will it still record discrete tracks to SD card? Cause it's cool that it does that but losing multichannel is not worth it IMO if you want to do post production. With the MixPre you can also select what channels go out of the analog output so one way to retain multichannel is to send all channels besides Skype and connect that to the computer so that you get the best of both worlds. Of course all of this is dependent on your workflow and if a mix works for you then recoding that is fine. This video however is about multichannel and retaining that functionality because in a lot of cases that is why people bought a multichannel device. Still love the MixPre and in fact it's the device that I put most podcasters who have a budget on but of course most can't afford it when they are starting out and they have a hard time seeing the value unfortunately.
Ray Ortega yes, Iâm sending 2 channels to Mac and recording multitracks on SD card at the same time. I believe itâs a pretty rare feature for audio interfaces like this. I used to have Zoom H5 and I was really disappointed with lack of this feature. Iâm really happy with workflow where my Mac is just a source of an audio and input a mix for callerâs convenience. All recording is happening on the device itself, including Skypeâs track. It feels much more reliable. Also I double checked my settings and Iâm sending channels 1, 2, 3 only to L in both St. Out L/R options for some reason. I donât remember why but it seems I got it right :)
@@pepelsbey Cool, I'm getting the MP3 for work and I look forward to testing all this out. Have fun!
You're a lifesaver man!
Super helpful, thanks Ray!
Thanks! And I'll just say it now, congrats on 100K subs!
Great video! It was super helpful. Trying to use LadioCast to send QLAB Soundboard Audio AND mic input through Skype for podcasting. I understand that much. Do you have any idea how to record these three sounces in a DAW?
This is awesome just what I was looking for! What about audio from iPhone or computer? If i want to play music so the other person on the other end can hear it clearly? Thanks
OMG thank you!!! I had this problem with skype with my brand new Scarlett 2i2 3RD gen.
Glad this was helpful!
This was great help and a life saver for my drum teaching in these crazy times. Iâve now switched to Zoom for my students and like it much better. Do you know if Zoom can detect and broadcast all 8 channels of my interface or do I still need to continue using Ladiocast and soundflower? It would be great to be able to use all of my drum mics if possible but it still sounds pretty good with 1 talkback, 1 overhead, 1 kick and a phone playback channel. Thanks
Thanks a lot. That saved my wife's online lessons!!
Great tutorial ! Thanks a lot !
Thanks.
Awesome, thanks for sharing!!
A huge thank you !
Very helpful! Cheers
Thanks for recommendation, it works :)
Thanks Ray!
sweet! im gonna try this todayyyyy
thank you for this !! it really helped. but i am facing a problem here.. Ladiocast mixer is showing input source to output (soundflower) connected. but somehow when i choose Sound flower 2ch on Skype, it doesnt pick up any sound. i tried both using Audio interface and build in mic. same thing happens. any tips?

Thank you very much!!!! you helped me out!
Yay!! Thanks for letting me know!
Hey Ray, thanks for this helpful episode!!! It made my system run :)
Have you ever tried to use an backing track from your Mac as well?
I got my skype partners stuff out to my headphones via the 3,5mm jack on my Mac. This would also be the jack for my play-alongs / backingtracks if I'm using itunes for example.
Using iTunes via my headphone out I create an loop because my skype-partner can listen to himself...
Help would be appreciatet =)
Great video mate, is it possible to make this work using your DAW instead? (Logic X in my case)
Hey Ray - thanks so much for this - huge help to a newbie like me! Does Sunflower translate to a stereo sound once itâs heard on the other end of the skype call? For instance, if one of my inputs is binaural beat music intentionally recorded to be heard in a particular way - could I expect it to come out that way intact on the other end of the call (particularly if headphones are used on that end)? Or is it all heard as if it were mono on the other end of the skype call? Thanks!
hello and congratulations for the channel. I wanted to ask you how do I insert two microphones in ORTF microphone technique? how can i change the pan pot for separate left and right channel?
thanks Ray!!
Thanks. I work in Windows and use Cubase 10.5. Can you do a tutorial for the same result but for windows? Thanks.
Thanks for this! Any idea if there is a hardware solution to do the same thing? I want to be able to use multiple XLR mics, or even an external sound generator like an iPad
thank you very much!!! It worket just fine!!!!
Really helpful. Do you know how to do if I want to play tracks on the Mac? Thank you
thanks!! very helpful :)
You rule - thanks for this!
Thank you! This gets me PART of the way to where I need to be. The other part is that I would like to be able to patch my DAW into the Skype session along with the live mics, so that I can play back part of what's been recorded in the session to the listener on Skype call.
In my case I'm using a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre Thunderbolt. The output of my recorded tracks in my DAW is going into Thunderbolt 1/2, but Ladiocast does not see that. How can I route that signal in as well?
First if you are recoding Skype in your DAW make sure you are not monitoring the audio from the DAW or you will send the Skype audio back as well creating a loop. The output of the DAW can't go into the interface and then have that also work as an input to Skype. I think you'd need to try and use Soundflower to route the output of the DAW to LadioCast. You'll need to expirment since this gets all jumbled in my head lol. You could also route the output of your computer back into the Clarrett and then use that channel as the input for Ladiocast. Let me know how it works out.
Thank you, sir.
Thanks Ray! Teaching dance classes online since 4 weeks ago, and struggling with the audio through Zoom. What app would replace Soundflower on a PC, please?
Hey Ray, great tutorial! Thanks for that!
what would be the best app to applie more channels? i have a 16 channel interface and need at least 9 channels of that?
greetings
Good question, seems like some others are asking the same, I think you'd probably need to get into something premium like Loopback but also what OS are you on? Maybe VoiceMeeter on Windows. Unfortunately I haven't explored it yet.
Great Ray! You're awesome! damn skype...
Hi, thanks for great upload! But how about latency?? How do you solve this problem ?
I like your editing
Thanks!
