Dell XPS laptop screen replacement (this used to be easy)

  • Replacing the screen on a laptop used to be a 5 minute job, but now with all the tape and adhesive, it takes much longer and is more difficult to do without damaging other parts of the computer . I understand pc tech gets thinner and smaller but is it worth trading ease of repair? Technology doesn't always have to sacrifice longevity for function, but it seems that's the road we're going down.

I've worked on a lot of HP products and some of their newer products (at the time, not sure about now) also used adhesive for their screens. It is hard for me to overstate how horrible working with a delicate screen is when the adhesive is really strong. Even if it wasn't broken before, the screen definitely would be after it was taken out. They technically listed a way of removing the adhesive that might avoid breakage of the screen, but it didn't consistently work. I don't understand why it's so horrible using screws instead of adhesive. It works well.

All these electronics repair videos make me scared I might eventually need my laptop repaired. Last one had the screw of the frame at the base of the screen rust and snap. Screen still holds with a clamp and everything works plugged ( batterie died 5 years ago ).

It also seems like the threshold for breaking the screen is lower. I ship at least 4 of these machines back to dell for screen replacement each month. Some field guy leaves a pen on the keyboard or slams the lid down on his laptop vehicle mount. Sigh.

Ugh we get the XPS’s in left and right at work, always an issue with the screen or battery it seems like. I’ll stick to my tank of a Latitude.

had to replace the screen on my first laptop once. couldn't get the original resolution, so suddenly I had full HD. performance went DOWN because integrated graphics had to work more for the same size higher res screen.

I had a XPS as well and I loved it. Then the screen suddenly split into two different colors and the fan died 😢

I had an old acer aspire and put chrome os once started has great battery life and was fast and responsive. Without any upgrades. And I used it for school and would often get a pencil closed in the hinges and the screen did not break at all. Was not damaged.
