  • Is the Sony A6100 the best crop-sensor, mirrorless to start with? With so many other A-series cams, which one should you buy? I take a look at the A6100 and explain why you might want this camera over the other Sony options. See all my gear including what was used to make this video via kit.co/rayortega

    In my opinion, the A6100 is the newest entry level camera for video makers who want to film with Sony cameras. It has all the best features I'm looking for in a camera for vlogging, CZcams, family or travel video: compact size, flip screen, microphone input with a good preamp for clean audio, and decent low light capabilities.
    The older entry level Sony Alpha cameras (A5100 and A6000) were great cameras for video but they lacked a microphone input (A5100) or a flip screen (A6000) as well, they were prone to overheating and didn't shoot 4K. All of these factors are why I would spend more to get the A6100.
    Compared to the A6300, discontinued but can be bought used, the A6100 lacks picture profiles (SLOG2 etc) and doesn't have a metal body but does have a touchscreen for touch to focus, better autofocus in video, cheaper price and a flip screen.
    The A6500 has in body image stabilization (IBIS) which the A6100 lacks but has no real advantage besides also having picture profiles. If I was considering the A6500 I would go up to the A6600 instead and get all the recent upgrades including a flip screen together with IBIS.
    Overall, the A6100 is a solid entry level camera for shooting video and you could build an entire CZcams channel without the need to upgrade for several years. I don't imagine many people who are looking to get into video would be disappointed with the purchase of the A6100.

      @RayOrtega  Pƙed 4 lety

      Thanks, Chris! The 6600 looks great, I have loved my 6500 and the 6600 just improves on that. The only real issue with Sony these days is rolling shutter (jello cam) it's pretty bad so you have to be very aware of it when filming but also the 6600 puts you close, price wise, to getting into full frame with the also awesome podhelp.me/Sonya7IIIkitBH (affiliate link) but of course it's still a decent step up in price, just something to realize. However I'm sill also waiting for the elusive A7IIIS. But while that cam will likely be all the things I'd want, it will also likely be beyond what I'd want to pay. It never seems like a good time to buy but the 6600 is still really awesome especially when considering budget. I don't think it really lacks anything I'd want.

    IBIS in the a6500 is useless for video. -It's for helping photographers not blur their work with micro-movements. It does *nothing* to help stop camera bounce when vlogging while walking. This was a bummer when I discovered it, (after buying one. Phooey. I wish I'd paid closer attention to the minutia before ordering, but the fact escaped me. I thought IBIS was IBIS was IBIS. But.., nope).

      @@fidelecheverria6772 It's impossible to know cause every environment is different but people on here, other reviewers, are running theirs for well over an hour in 4K and it's doing fine. One of the keys in this newer a series (a6100, 6400, 6600) is the upgraded processor which allows the camera to run more efficiently and this is the reason you get better battery life even from the same battery and longer times before the heating warning. Not to mention there is no time limit like the 6500 etc. Sony's probably wouldn't be my first choice for times when I need to let the camera run that long. These newer ones can do it but I've seen people get even more consistent results from Panasonic which hasn't had a limit for awhile and of course that kind of use case is really better suited to a proper video camera which would have a bigger body cause it's built for that kind of use. These tiny cams get hot cause there's so much packed together.

    My budget is 700$. Is sacrificing the 55-210 lens worth the upgrade from A6000 to A6100?

      For video yes worth the upgrade. I can't say much about photo since I don't use it much but there are likely some good comparisons here on CZcams to check out.
