    Today I’m going to compare the Sony a6100, a6400 and a6600. These represent the newest models from Sony’s APS-C lineup. At first glance, they look virtually identical - but once you dive in you find some important and sometimes surprising differences. So which one of them should you buy?
    Ranging in price from $598 to $1198, these three models share elements like the sensor and processor, but we’re going to take a look at the strengths and weakness of the #A6100, #A6400 and #A6600 for both photography and video and help you pick the right one for you.
    I’m going to talk about camera body type, frame rate and resolution, autofocus, image stabilization, audio features, and ergonomics.
    I will also look at battery life, timelapse, viewfinder, ISO performance and the built-in flash.
    Finally I’ll tell you which option I think is best for different uses.

    What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the Sony A6100, a6400 and a6600 was helpful. I tried to include enough images and video to show you what the cameras can produce. I’m curious to hear which model you think would work well for you.
    Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

    I've literally spent 2 weeks watching numerous tech reviews so I can feel confident on my first vlogging camera purchase (I'm pretty sure you've all been there) looking for unbiased opinions, the reality and facts, and genuine helpful information as opposed to tech reviews that just made me more confused and felt pressured into purchasing what they were promoting. I found more value in this video than I did with many other channels put together. I can finally make my purchase in confidence. Thank you very much and I greatly appreciate your help.

    Thank you for the review, very helpful. I upgraded to an A6600 from a A5000. Since I wanted IBIS and bigger battery, and rarely use the flash, it was a good choice. I also love the larger grip. I wish they had done the display like on the A7C though.

    Even though this is a 3 year old video, I still find it to be extremely helpful in making my decision on my first camera. I graduated from highschool today and plan on buying one of these cameras with money ive gotten, and your amazingly well done videos are helping me narrow my decision. I think I’m gonna go with the a6400 due to it being only a couple hundred more and offered many more features that would be helpful in a long-term camera for a beginner like me. Many thanks!

    Was thinking of upgrading from my old APSC to FF and awaiting the next 2 camera announcements from Sony but recently went on a trip that made me re-appreciate the crop system for my style of photos (run and gun while traveling). Now I’m between the a6400 vs 6600. Flash vs IBIS. Honestly I rarely use the flash so I may pick up the 6600 this fall.

    Thanks for the video! I ended up getting an A6000 as my first camera a few weeks ago, but was tempted to upgrade in hindsight. I'm not particularly good at getting crisp focused images through the EVF though.
    Have you done any comparisons between the A6000 and the A6100 image-quality wise? Your shots look stunning, and the A6000 has been quite fun to shoot with overall, just need to figure out how to focus a bit more reliably.
    I'd prolly jump to the A6400 if the viewfinder is significantly better, unless there's another way to verify focus that you'd recommend/if I'm not supposed to be using the viewfinder to check focus..

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  Před 4 lety +2

      You're very welcome. After you take a shot, check the focus in the LCD by zooming in on the preview. Depending on what you're shooting, you'll want to use different AF modes.

    Thank you for this video and as well for the very informative content.
    I have owned the Sony A6400 for almost a year now and have taken it travelling with the SEL1650mm kit lens. (This was traveling pre-pandemic).
    Over the past few months, I have since paired the A6400 with a few lenses - some with and some without OSS. I have also seen various reviews of the A6600. Looking back, I would still choose the A6400. One of the main considerations for me would have been IBIS, but it appears that Sony's IBIS on the A6600 may not be "good enough" to warrant the cost difference. Purchasing a lens with OSS (albeit the selection would be limited to Sony lenses) and using a handful of techniques might offset the absence of IBIS on the A6400.
    I would like to point out that I do not own nor have ever used the Sony A6600. The comment regarding its IBIS is merely a general perception based on others' reviews or sample video clips.
    With the screen - I've gotten used to it. In some ways, having it flip up is better than having it side-mounted. For front-facing photos/videos, with the screen flipped up, at least your eyes are directed more towards the lens (even if you may be looking at the screen). If the screen is side-mounted, since there's a tendency to look at the screen, then the front-facing photo/video will capture your eyes looking sideways.
    With respect to durability - I managed to drop the A6400 on concrete while in Melbourne Park in Australia. It was a 3.5-foot drop. The main point of impact was the back part of the hand grip (where the battery door is). The battery door swung open as it hit the ground and the metal plate inside it popped lose. I thought for sure the camera would be damaged for sure. You can imagine what I felt at that moment as my wife and I ponder at the unfortunate event that just transpired.
    But lo and behold, other than a crack underneath the Preview and Trash Can buttons, the camera worked! Even the kit lens was unaffected. I was unable to close the battery door at first but after playing around with that metal plate, I was able to insert it back and have the battery door close properly. There was no other physical damage - even the grip itself left no evidence of the drop. We were amazed! Had I been using a larger and heavier lens, the outcome might be different though.
    Of the Sony A6000 line, the A6400 probably offers the best balance in features, functionality, and cost.
    Not too long before this post, Fuji released the X-S10. This may be more of a competitor to the A6400 in the APS-C market.

    • @SilveiraWTraveler
      @SilveiraWTraveler Před 2 lety

      So you are saying that a6400 is a good choice?

    • @romvil
      @romvil Před 2 lety +1

      @@SilveiraWTraveler Yes. For less than the cost of the a6600 body, you can get the a6400 + 2 Sony lenses with OSS.
      For myself, I find full frame cameras much too large to take anywhere. A consideration especially when travelling.
      Since the original post however, there have been new camera releases that I would consider if I were buying a camera today:
      Sony a7c - Yes - it's full frame but with a compact body.
      Sony ZV-E10 - Recently announced - APS-C sensor and interchangeable lens - an even less expensive option than the a6400.
      Fujifilm X-S10 - I think this is the best mid-range APS-C camera out there. And this one has IBIS. I own this as well. Where it falls short - battery life and video recording limit (a6400 has no limit).

I was trying to decide between the A6400 and the A6600. I found a good deal on a very clean lightly used A6600 so that is what I ended up with. I think I would have been just about as happy with the A6400. I do like the bigger battery and since I already have an A7iii I have an extra battery and a battery charger. Great video!! I was wondering what's your opinion on (or have you done any testing on) whether is better too run your audio into your camera or run it to a computer or external recorder? (My theory is that running through the camera will give a more cohesive sound experience. I've noticed some creators' videos sound GREAT but the audio feels disconnected from the video.)

    Thanks so much for this video. I’m still on the fence. Driving myself crazy. Big part is cameras AND Lens. I want the 6600 but I also want a couple good lens that won’t break the bank but are fast and do justice to the amount of money I spend on the camera. D90, Mark 6 II. Ugg. I love your videos. Excellent teaching and presentation. Every time I watch, I go out and almost pull the trigger. I want a camera for my channel, top down recording my ipad for tutorials, and recording myself, plus photography and b-roll videos.

    I found a great deal on a used a6100 as an upgrade to my a6000. There were two things that were left out of the 6100 that it never occurred to me to check. The electronic level which I just assumed would be there, and then the IR sensor. I use and IR remote with the 6000 all the time and it was a great disappointment that it wasn't in the 6100. Maybe no one else uses it which is why it's never mentioned in any review. I get around both, but it seems to me those were odd things to leave out. Outside of that, I love the camera.

    Obsessed with your vids last few days! Would love your suggestion even after watching the full vid, lol. I wanna go with the one within my budget 6100, using it mainly for vlogging, self taped and short film clips. I’m worried about no stabilization but when I’m filming it’s almost always on a tripod. Will this been and issue? (For pic taking as well). Thanks!

A6600 is out of my budget so it would come down to the 6400 or 6100...which would you think would be best?? Or is there any other camera you might recommend with that budget?? Thanks man👍

    Thank you very much for the in depth review. I’m currently in a heavy hitting portfolio class wrapping up my graphic design degree. We’re required to use professional photography for each project. Each project involves stationery items. I’m using both drop down and straight on shot methods. I want each shot to look as sexy and professional as possible. Which of these would you recommend? Thank you

    Thank you for your videos. I got lucky and found an OB A7iii at BB for a great price. What I’ve learned is that I do not take it with me like my X100V. I LOVE the build of the A7iii but the cost of FF lenses for a non-primary camera isn’t the best call in my case. The resolution of the A7iii is better than my Fuji X100V but I have to look for it. What I’m learning is I love Sony AF for my kids but don’t think I need FF. I also don’t do much video so it seems like the 6400 is the right call. With that body I can afford better glass. What two lenses would you recommend for a walk around and a low light lens for family shots indoors? I don’t mind a zoom for walk around but would like good quality & fitting in s hoodie pocket would be awesome. Can’t express how helpful your videos are.

    Holy crap this is amazing. Instant sub from me just due to the elaborate work you've done here for us all. This is nearly perfect, although I would like to see a better idea of how the video stabilization works on the 6600 vs the 6400 and 6100. This is my primary struggle right now with deciding between cameras. Is it worth it jumping to the 6600 for the video stabilization and extra ~5 stops for images with stabilization. That being said, it would be cheaper to get a 6100 with a gimbal... hmmm... Thoughts?
