- Today we're comparing the Sony A6600 and the Sony A7iii. I'm a gigantic fan of the A7iii as I've been using one pretty consistently since its release and full time as my stills camera for the past few months.
But the A6600 has most of the same features and more but costs much less.
Which of these actually would work best for the online content creator?
Let's find out!

There’s a lot to love about both of these cameras. I was surprised to find out the Becki & Chris mostly use an A6400 for their videos, including studio stuff, all of which look incredible.
Yeah these little cameras are incredibly powerful, I actually miss having one around.
The Enthusiasm Project you can get one right now from B&H with your EDU account for $918.40 not to tempt you or anything lol
The Enthusiasm Project come on man turn away from the dark side of Canon 🤣🤣🤣
Do you think it is capable of sport photography? Can you do music videos?
@@joshualucero8082 : If it has a battery, lens and memory card, darn any camera will work. If you are super concerned and loaded with cash, I think the A7Siii is what you want. It's only $3,500 for the body only.
Yes, I agree. I recently upgraded to a7iii. I chose it because I mainly uses my camera to do photography.

Sony a6600 with 16-55 f/2.8 combo is really awesome. The combo is the lightweight, better battery, and a flip-up screen helps a lot. Even my G9 body size bigger than this one. I just love this camera.
Autofocus speed when on A6600 when pairing with the 16-55 f/2.8 is also very very fast.
a6600 is awesome with flip screen capability ;)
but I dont like the audio quality. it is too 'dry'. so I use external tascam dr-10L recorder

Thank you for the helpful and informative video!
I was just reading about these two today! Thanks for the vid ( I am picking the A6600)
great video. Super clear and helped me make my decision
Just got my A6600 so loving the content, I'm not a pro so settled on going with the A6600. Now to learn how to use it better.
How’s the a6600 going? I’m going to purchase it tomorrow! So far I just shoot on a GoPro! So this will be a step up, new learning curve

Thank you for making this video. 👍
Thanks so much!

Love the video, could definitely hear how windy it was on the coast with that wind noise through the deadcat. I appreciate the review, have been going back and forth on upgrading my A77II to either the A6400 or A6600, not so worried about the IBIS as the camera will live on either a tripod or my Ronin-S, but the Z-Batteries are a very big perk for me, I have several already with my A7III and would love the ability to only need one set of batteries and charger on a shoot. Also that headphone jack would be helpful
The biggest benefit over the a6400 in my opinion is the Z battery, if you dont need it I'd go a6400.
Jesse Goll I am with you dude....I am so tempted especially with this crazy sale going on right now at B&H (plus my EDU discount lol)
You may need IBIS in low light situation. I am able to take a blur free with 1/4 shutter speed hand held.
Good stuff keep it up !
Thank you for this great vid.
now i know my choise !!!
*Dude!! keep up the good work*
Thanks so much!
I own both A7 III and A6400. Both are great cameras! BUT, after using the A7 III for a long time, I find switching to the A6400 to be awkward because of the dial placement. On the A6400, I keep changing the mode by mistake.
Lots of good info! I've been flipping back and forth about upgrading to an eos r or a sony. I'm really wanting to move from a g85 to a gh5 but I do some recording at conventions with a gimbal and need a good auto focus.
I'm in a similar position. Ready to get rid of my G85, the autofocus is dreadful. I look at the A6600 and the quality is insane, but the IBIS seems to be really awful for walking and talking!!
The 6600 in the comparo looks sharper and has less artifacting.
Would you say that the A6600 is the ultimate budget solution for guys that want to make a lot of videos then? What about the A7s II in 2020?
it will be great if the flip screen can flip to the side as an option to flip upward. Because if we put mic using hot shoe , it will cover the screen so then we need additional rig.
In regards to video features alone. I think the A6600 has an upper hand with having eye AF in video. Which the A7III does not have nor will have. And sensor size/low light is subjective. For some reason I feel like I’d want the full sensor. But having eye AF in video is a priority to me as well. Tough choice! And I have the A6400 already and I’m very satisfied. Trying to decide on a A/B-cam setup.
Thanks for your honest feedback. Going with 6600
Great video, thank you. Did you say that if you connect an Atomos Ninja 5 to the A73 that this will overcome the 30-minute record time limit and enable you to record continuously for much longer? Do you happen to have a video on this? I'm new to also this. Thank you.
Some people (like me) would prefer the APS-C as I shoot mainly video and it’s almost identical to Super35 and gives you a similar depth of field. If I mainly did photography I would go full frame but for filmmakers APS-C at 4K 24fps is the holy grail
so basically A7III for photographers and A6600 for filmmakers?
@@LuisHong basically yes. for film, ideally a super35/APS-C sensor, no rolling shutter, 4K 60 RAW with built in ND filters would be a dream for under 2,000 USD
@@zariyah295 4K60 Raw under 2k? Can't the black magic do that lol. The 6K is 2K isn't it?
@@zariyah295 could you explain a little bit why crop sensor/super 35 is better for filmaking than full frame?
Hey ,great Vid!
I'm in the process of buying a Sony A7SIII and am wondering if I should get a 6600 (16-55/2,8) or an A7III(16-55/2,8) as a side cam.
I use it mainly for 4K video and also often shoot events in the evening or people directly in front of the camera
where I also want to have the surroundings on it.
I also do not want any difficulties to put both recordings together.
What would you (guys) recommend to me?
I sold my A7III for the a6600. I'm crazy I know... My A7III overheated all the time and it drove me nuts. That combined with the 29 minute recording limit was a deal breaker. Also needing an hdmi monitor to film myself. And when plugged in I lost face tracking and the screen blacked out! The a6600 isn't full frame but it does a fantastic job for what I need. But! The rolling shutter is terrible! There is no perfect camera. There's only the right tool for the job! Nice video dude!
I don’t think that’s crazy, the a6600 makes a lot of sense in a lot of ways 👍
That’s odd, I’ve never ever had my A7iii overheat. Not once. My A6500 does occasionally, usually outside on hot days.
@Ahmad770 So far my a6600 hasn't overheated. as a bonus it no longer breaks up the files into 4GB chunks! No recording limit, one big file, no overheating... This makes life so much easier.
@@NickGranville I've heard that the earlier revisions had the overheating issues. I got mine really early on pre-order... maybe thats why. But it was a regular occurance. Usually after filming for 20 minutes or so in 60-70F degrees I'd start to get the heat warnings.
Chase the Summit wow, that doesn’t sound good. 20 minutes isn’t long
You always have awesome videos! Way to go! And also you don’t MacBook or iPad sitting next you, which almost every single CZcamsr does, it just looks funny, it’s only for looks :)))
I do actually have an iPad sitting next to me controlling the GH5 🤣
I know that you have it to control GH5, other CZcamsrs have it sitting for everyone to see, without even once looking in to it 🤣
So stoked to finally have this video! I’ve been waiting for someone to do a comparison as this is the decision I’ve been trying to make and it’s nice to have some clarity! Thanks so much love the videos!
Were you able to make a decision?
@@zerospecs2331 I did. I ended up going with the a6600. The form factor completely sold me and the wicked fast autofocus. I have not run into anything that I couldn’t do even with the crop sensor.
Would love to see the a7r4 vs a6600 vs r5. The pros and cons and what is best for what.
Could you make a video about the a7ii vs a7iii? Or do you already have it. Because when im searching for a good video i cant find it, and when i randomly click, its a really good informative video... xD
hi dad ! do you know if the a6600 has better ibis ?
Nikon guy here with a used a6300 and 20mm pancake lens. The a6600 larger grip and high capacity battery makes it the winner.
Which camera did you use to record this video on studio?
How do you compare the Sony a6600 to the Canon m6 mark II (any video on this?)
You can't test it with a cropped sencor lens! That literally removes every benefit of shooting full frame!😂😂😂
Sam Gilfellan yep.
Sam Gilfellan the apsc cameras can get full frame conversion with speed boosters.
And the image was still sharper with the A7, just look at the trees in the background.
@@sefp You cannot speedboost mirrorless glass. There's no E-mount speedboosters too. And speedboosters don't give a full 1.0x crop. Usually it's 1.1 or 1.2.
in the test he did, the lens doesn't matter in this case
A6600 and A7iii can both give you ISO 50, I love that setting for Ships, Trains and Trucks. The results of ISO 50 are great on both the A6600 and A7iii.
For the vlog setup, the a6600 was definitely the more pleasant feed. Seems sharper to me.
very informative in the video test a6600 looking sharp, skin tone on a7iii looks a bit yellowish. however i am still leaning towards a7iii
the A6600 video looks sharper, maybe because the A7 III used the wrong kit lens?
He used a crop lens on a full frame sensor. That’s is why.
in the test he did, the lens doesn't matter in this case
Thanks a lot. I’m ready to make that jump from phone recording. This is very informative.
Nice! Hope the video was worth watching! 👍
My millennial son says better to buy a Samsung note phone evey 4 years that is always in your pocket vs a sony camera w 4 lenses for $4 to $6k that depreciates to almost $1k in 5 years
file1man do you agree with him?
@@KobraToldYa I've invested heavily in moving from a canon 80d to a sony a7r3. However, I suggest you purchase an osmo mobile 3 phone gimbal, $120, and use it with a samsung note9, note 10, or the upcoming Samsung s20+ with likely 3 lenses, including likely a zoom lense. Or a $1100 sony rx100vii, which is pocket size and approaches my a7r3 experience but you cant change its zoom lense. Wish i was aware of and had tried my note 9 with the osmo mobile 3 phone gimbal before I invested so much. If you have a good, recent phone, try the osmo 3 gimbal first for $120 at b&h
@@file1man lol "millenial son" XD.
Thank you brother ❤️❤️❤️
Good comparison as always!
Thanks Paul!
Sony has great image quality. Frankly, most cameras these days have good to great image quality. Sony's only downfall right now is that 8-bit codec. And lack of Panasonic-level of IBIS and flippy screen. If Sony were to toss out an a7iv with a flippy screen, 10-bit codec, and Panasonic-like IBIS... I think they'd corner the entire content-creator market. I am learning, no matter what, it's generally better to record to the Ninja V (if you have one or a similar product) because SD cards are great, but SSD is better.
And thanks for the punch-throwing lesson!
Thought I read that my sony a7r3 cant do a clean 4k hdmi out to a ninja external recorder. Only does 1080p. So if I get a ninja 5 connected by hdmi, in 4k, will the ninja display the video being recorded and can I use the ninja screen to control camera settings?
With a display port out for even higher bandwitch speeds !
The big thing for me is the codec. I really love the Sony ecosystem (which is what I came from), but the ceiling is relatively low in post, especially where color is concerned. I'll stick with my beloved GH5 for now, but I'm wondering if we'll ever see a GH6... 😥
For car photography which is the better option between those two and the 6400 &A7ii
Good review but I have the a6400 and the 4k24 rolling shutter is horrible compared to the a7iii. That is a huge difference
Notification squad! It’s been forever since I’ve been able to say that!
And its been forever since I've been able to say thanks for that!
Thanks. But it would be great if you put a link to download video files of tests.
Thanks so much for this super useful video. I'm going to get the a6600 for static vlogging in a small room and REALLY want the blurry depth background.
I'm doing my head in trying to work out what lens to get (I'm a complete camera noob). Any suggestions on compatible lens that will give me blurry background would be sooo welcomed!
I’d love to know this answer too. This was a year ago. Did you figure it out?
Do a comparison between gh5 and Sony 6600 soon!!!
3:30 you talked about SLog. Could you please elaborate that banding thing in comparison with other brand? Sony is the camera of my prospect particularly the A7R3. Also, just in case you have a weebill s, could you please assess if the A6600 would work well in that gimbal used with 24-70mm lens. Thanks a lot.
Sony mirrorless cams are only 8 bit, except the new a7s3. 8 bit video contains too little information to use S-log properly. Log profiles flatten everything from contrast to saturation (not a scientific explanation, but that's how it kinda works). That allows the camera to capture more shadows and highlights, and you just restore it back in editing.
However, 8 bit video only has 255 colours per rgb channel. When you flatten it so harshly, a lot of information is lost forever, and when you try to restore in post by adding contrast/saturation and grading, there's magenta/pink artifacts cos there's no data to fill in. Conversely, 10bit has 1024 colours per channel. 8 bit captures 16.7million colours. 10bit captures 1.07 billion. That's more than 60x the colour information. Only 8 bit codecs (like in the Canon cinema cams) that has been engineered for log should be used with log. You are better off using Cine or HLG with 8 bit. If you want to shoot log, 10 bit and above is a must.
Wow, the 6600 looked great! Ergonomically, I like the A7III....and GH5😂
Nice video. Why do you prefer the GH5 for video?
Hey! Loved it! May get the a6600 but can u confirm is the a6600 weather sealed
Its is weather sealed, just like the a6400
What lens were you using around 4:29? Was it the kit lens still?
Will my old lenses from my a6600 still work on the a7C and will it still have an advantage to have full frame if my lenses aren't?
Is that a Members Only jacket? Didn't think they would ever make back.
Hi! I'm looking forward to buying my first camera for both photos and videos. I like the A6600, but I somehow don't like missing out on 4K 60. How important is 4K 60 in your opinion? I'm also missing the USB type C port. I mean it's 2020.
Do you think the A6600 is the right option as a first real camera?
I was wondering this too
@@keturahmaree5710 me too.
Hi there, did you use to do jiujitsu with Dez?
I have been trying both of these cameras & am having trouble deciding. Which of these would you recommend if you were going to use it for travel photos? I predominately shoot stills; landscapes, cityscapes, people, wildlife. I occasionally shoot video. I do not currently do any Vlogging. I want something that would work in the widest variety of light situations. I’d like to also be able to travel with one lens that would work for photos at a variety of distances.
A6600 with 16-55
It's nice down here in Florida ÷). Another video that we needed.
Another reason is the apc lenses. You can find excellent sigma f1.4 lenses for crop sensor which are relative cheap. In full frame these kind of lenses are extremely expensive
Anastasis Demirtzoglou Except any of those sigma are really 1.4.
Their T-stop is about 1.8/1.9, and that changes a lot of things for video.
What are you using to shoot your CZcams video camera + lens?
What if you do photos only, I’m assuming you’d choose the a7iii over the a6600?
yes. more dynamic range
I don’t get it... when did you stop using your EOS R? 🤔
I think I heard Everyday Dad say the a6400 doesn't not have eye focus, which it does. Checked on BH website and Sony's website.
Super vidéo.Thank
which lenses did he use in this video . more so at the @ 9.12 mark ? thanks!
Would the Sony a 6600 be good for Astro photography?
"We all know REAL Pros only use full frame."
That intro killed it, I closed the video after.
Kidding, I finished the video. Haha
Ha, in fairness that is really not true at all. You can take pro images with crop sensors no problem, I've been working professionally for 5yrs exclusively using APC
OC Photography I was just making fun of the intro. I’ve included a crop sensor in my work kit as well.
If there was no time limit on the A7III it would be a whole grade better.
I had the a7iii but now have the a7riii. The 6600 seems to do a better job with stabilization. Maybe because it’s lighter 😏. I always noticed the rx100vii has much better stabilization vs a7iii or r.
Yeah the stabilization isn't great on either but its better than nothing I guess.
The EOS-R has a stabilization that doesn't drain any battery. It uses calories from your meal.
All of Sonys cameras sadly have pretty bad Ibis compared to other companies like Panasonic or Olympus... They really need to improve there
Great vid
Thanks!
Which camera is good for street photography between these two?
On the vlogging test the 6600 had much more background bokeh. Why not use the same settings?

I know 6600 is a wonderful beast but because of that that one and only difference I’d go for A7M3
What is best for photography ( car photography )
That 6600 is CRISPY 🔥🔥✨
Start bumping up the ISO and your decision will be much clearer. The a6600 is impressive for what it is, but to me a "general purpose" camera will be used often enough in low light for that to be a consideration....not to mention the whole shallow depth of field thing. For content creating, I agree 100% that the 6600 kills the A7iii, if for no other reason than that stupid record limit has been lifted.
Well yeah sure supposedly you can get even larger sensors, the iso difference between aps-c and full frame... is... existent, i'd take apsc to 8000 iso and full frame to 12800 maybe 16000 iso (with 24mp sensors) at most, but really doesnt make that much of a difference that 2.8 and 1.4 glass make. I've tried them out and even one inch sensors, and honestly as long as my image quality remains with good color, sharp and contrasty im fine with some grain.
It's Sony a6600 good for events or I should go for a7 III?
Hey, I want to purchase an Apsc camera, I have 3 options, first is zv-e10 at 720 dollar or 60k INR with kit lens, second is a6600 body only at 790 dollar or 66k INR, and rhird is a6400 at 850 dollar or 75k INR with kit lens. Which one I should buy.
a6600 vs a6400
@Lee 1227 Depend on your usage, if you are going to film outdoor yeah you need battery. Indoor just plug in the charger cable.
My deal breaker is "AutoFocus" while connected to an external screen
There are some differences between the A6400 and A6600 besides the battery size... The SD card is inserted differently and is easier for me to insert and withdraw. The A6600 has an ISO 50 capability which is important when I want to use a slower shutter speed to freeze water among other reasons. The A6600 has a focus and shoot touch capability which is great for when I want to shoot several images to merge for extended DOF...
A 6600
Thanks
10:08 the A6600 looks sharper
Hello , which one is better for videography b roll technique
I think a7iii is good for photos, however video wise, i'll go for a6600
Question: if I needed to upgrade the zoom kit lens that comes with the a6600 to something better but something that still has stabilization for video, what is the best similar lens to get?
if you have enough budget you can pick 16-55 f/2.8 or if you need OSS you can pick 18-105 f4... if you want the best then 16-55 f/2.8 with a gimbal...
Thanks for the awesome video, I'm going to get a a6600 now!

If you're a vlogger / CZcamsr go with a6600 if you record video in studio / shooting of others, go with a7 iii - The a6600 is easier to carry, has a flip screen so you can see yourself. The a7 iii is big, heavier and harder to handle and does not have flip screen!

@@robertbakerii5469, T3 is an old hardware for extremely low price. Buy T3i instead. The video quality since T3i is practically same. Though, for better auto focus, I would recommend later models. Say T5i or later ones.
Sinceramente me gustaría mucho la a6600, solo necesito que baje un poco más de precio para que las opciones full frame no sean más atractivas.
The most importan is Rango dynamic
I have the a6600 love it
No Duel SD Cards on the a6600 is the only thing stopping me from buying it.
I really don't think it's as necessary as you think, sd cards seldom fail these days, ofcourse it's totally fine if you're an occasional shooter, but makes sense to buy a dual sd card camera only if you're bread and butter comes from that camera... Cheers!
Adiii I shoot weddings full time. I have had a card fail on me after filming an entire wedding. I never made the mistake to shoot an entire wedding on a single card again but it would be nice to not have to worry about missing ANY footage from the wedding day if one did fail. I typically buy new cards every year as well.
You can’t use a cropped lens on the A7III that gives the advantage to the A6600 straight away. Yes Sony e mount glass it interchangeable but an APSC lens will always work better on an APSC camera. I would have used a third party like Sigma and had a prime lens on both to test it out.
Despite that you can still see the A7III has the sharper image, the trees in the background looked much better. The A7III is much cheaper now as well and Sony will have the new A7sIII/IV coming out soon best to wait I think
yall were having the a6600 vs a7 iii argument 3 years ago I'm having it. Which would you choose rn? cuz i can save like 300/400 bucks(in my country) by going with the a6600 and then not have to worry about the rest of my budget cuz it will easily cover 3 apsc primes while with the a7 iii I'd have to go with a manual focus wide angle or something and still barely have money for tripods and the rest of the things i need(im shooting a movie)
I saw other videos that say you can use full frame or APSC lenses on either.
