  • What if you need a mix-minus to a source other USB? The Rodecaster Pro can do both. This video shows you how to use the analog outputs (cables) to send a mix-minus out of the RCP.
    The RCP and a lot newer audio interfaces have a mix-minus feature built in. That’s when you want to mix several audio sources like your microphone, someone on a remote call, additional audio clips or music and you want to send that mix somewhere else while excluding one or more of those incoming audio channels.
    The mix-minus on the RCP can be handled through the USB channel where the audio coming into the USB won’t go back out and other channels like the phone or bluetooth channel will also go into the mix but will not return the audio on that channel back to the device.
    But what if you need to do a mix-minus using one of the analog outputs essentially any output that using a TRS cable? Well I needed to do this for a live-streaming setup where everything in the RCP, my mic, a remote person on the computer, and the soundboard, needed to go out to the camera without sending the remote guests their audio back which would create an audio loop of themselves, we don’t want that.
    The RCP has a headphone output in front which I’m calling the producer position because it’s tied to the channel 1 output and some of the features in the RCP can only be heard by using this output which I assume is the case cause typically the person plugged into channel 1 is the also the person that will be controlling the mix and therefore has different needs than anyone else connected who are likely cohosts or guests. That gives us this unique ability to hear the whole mix while also removing select audio channels from everyone else’s mix.
    The first thing you want to do is go into settings - hardware - advanced - audio - channels - Enable Pre-fade listen. This changes the function of this button from a solo button to a PFL button and that’s important because this is what will allow us to minus a channel from the outgoing mix, in other words, the person coming into the mixer won’t go back out again, avoiding that audio loop.
    Now when we plug our headphones into the front input or channel 1, every channel where we enable the PFL button, we can bring down the fader all the way and still hear the audio going into that channel.
    For every other output (headphone 2, 3, 4 and even the monitors), those will only get audio from channels that have the fader turned up.
    Next step is to connect headphone output 2, 3 or 4, using a TRS cable, to whatever device you want to send an audio mix.
    In my case I’m going to a MixPre3 connected to my Sony a6500. I could direct to the 6500, the MixPre just gives me some added features such as multiple inputs, front facing controls, audio meters and attenuation if needed.
    Now my audio will be in sync with my video and both signals will be sent together out of the HDMI to my computer where I’ll use some software to connect with a other people and live stream. Of course your setup and use case may be very different. The key is that we can now create a mix-minus using the RCP and the analog outputs.
    To complete the setup on the RCP, simply bring up the faders for every channel that you want to go into the mix and leave the fader all the way down for channels you don’t want in the analog mix. For example, I will be live-streaming with other people via the computer. They are coming into the RCP via the USB channel and I am going out to them on channel one. So I want them to hear me so my fader is up and I don’t want them to hear themselves so the USB channel fader is all the way down. I also want them to hear additional audio that I will play through the soundboard so I have that channel also turned up. Congrats we’ve created a mix-minus! A mix of the audio we want output minus the audio we don’t.

      Thanks, Diana! You're the one view I was looking for with this video! Almost nobody needs it but for that one person that does....yay!!

    You’ve got so much useful information going on your channel that I had no choice but to subscribe. One of the biggest issues I face the way I do my videos is making the audio and video line up while I’m doing my final editing.

      Thanks, again, more videos coming soon-ish;) What is your issue with syncing the audio? Does it slip out of sync over time or is it just that the workflow is a pain? How are you currently doing it? And make sure you are recording everything at the same sample rate (eg camera records at 48kbps and audio recorder or DAW is the same).

    Hey Ray! On a Yamaha MG12XU, is it possible to have a mix minus going on Aux1 knob and still send FX to that Aux1 Send output? Because the channel Aux1 knob has to be on 0 (mix minus) I can't get the FX to go out on Aux1 send output... The only way I got the FX going out of Aux1 Send to the other person was to use the Aux1 master volume knob above the FX fader but the mix minus stopped working. The other person could hear himself with the same FX I was trying to apply on my voice!
    Probably this is a good idea for a video: mix minus setup for conference/interviews over a phone but still sending your own voice with internal FX. Thanks in advance! :)

    Is there a way to create different mixes for different headphone outputs? For example, guest one is using headphone 2, and guest 2 is using headphone 3. I'd like to create a mix minus which is tailored for each guest.

    Thanks so much for this! Do you happen to know if there is any way to keep the solo buttons on by default when turning the Rodecaster on? Needing to hit those three buttons every time is really my only concern right now.

      Thanks, Shane, unfortunately no I don't know any way to keep the solo button engaged once you restart. Glad the video was helpful.

    How about using the mix minus usb to check sound with a guest before letting him to be live in a show and not hearing that in the live mix? Have you tested it?

  • @ishootla9758
    @ishootla9758 Před 2 lety

    What about the sound board? It only has the solo button. What if you're recording live (podcast) and you want to audition the level of a sound (button) without having it be recorded on the track(s).

    So is it correct to say that if you are on a phone call you should mute the mixer of your microphone and it will just pick up the audio from the phone via Bluetooth? The caller on the other end would hear every other that’s not muted? I believe having your microphone not muted would result in them hearing feedback? Thanks.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 2 lety +1

      In the case of the Rodecaster Pro, you don't have to mute anything. It's all being handled via built in mix-minus functionality which sends all the audio to the phone/bluetooth channel MINUS the phone's own audio therefore it doesn't feedback on itself. If that make sense?

    Does USB port hear the prefade settings or everything?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 3 lety +1

      USB to computer is going to be post-fader

  • @cops1987
    @cops1987 Před 2 lety

    So basically every channel will be sent out through the usb cable MINUS the "phone logo channel"? Is that correct? I can exclude the "phone logo channel" from going out the mixer through the usb cable?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 2 lety +2

      That is how the RCP works natively. Any remote audio coming into the USB will not go back out through the USB. In the setup I show in this video, you can get this to work with the analog outputs/cabling if you need a mix-minus to a non-USB device like a camera.

    • @cops1987
      @cops1987 Před 2 lety +1

      Can I select/choose which channels I want to send out the usb cable and which one to be excluded? Hypothetically, I want to send out through the usb only channel 1 and 2, and have all others channels (3,4,5,6 and 7) excluded, but still have all the 7 channels of the mixer being played through the active speakers connected to the mixer (no one excluded). Can I do that ? This is the part which I haven’t understood yet..

    • @cops1987

      Ray thanks a lot for helping me with that 👍

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 2 lety +1

      @@cops1987 not really. If you're connected via USB to a computer and setup as a stereo out not multichannel, then whatever faders are up, are going to leave the USB and you'd need to have 3,4 etc channels up in order to go out to speakers.
