Welcome to Hew and Awe, AKA Ben.
I'm a self taught maker, and often still learning along the way, I love to design and build my ideas, I sometimes just wing it too and see what comes out at the end of it. I'm crazy for wood and its beauty, taking the natural beauty to the next level.
So join me on that ride and see where this takes me, could be fun, you may learn something too...
Any constructive criticism is welcome! Just comment and let me know, I read and reply to all my comments.
Ta-ta for now..

Serious question, Ben. What affects your decision to use the track saw or the table saw when cutting sheet ply or MDF?
Getting a constant cut = table saw, breaking down sheet goods track saw, then table saw. Or the cut is to long or wide for the table saw, like a 4’ by 4’ pice of mdf on the table saw won’t go well. There’s only about 300mm support before the cut on a table saw too. Safety, precision in short dude. I also hate long cuts on the track saw cause u inevitably have to pause the cut to walk up to where the saw is to keep going and that leaves burn marks.
Yep. Big sheets are a pain. I've probably got room for a table saw with the panel/sliding bed attachment. I'm thinking that will be useful to assist with the long rips. Have you used one? Thoughts?
@sparkyoc6766 oh-man that’s kinda up to and what you do a lot of, me personally even if I had the space I wouldn’t get one cause they’re so big and I don’t use sheet goods much. I would t want to loose the floor space mostly, the one I used was a long time ago though near 20 yrs ago, not like the current ones that are a bit smaller. The thought of the space needed I keep coming back to, I mean you need 16’ 8’ either side of the blade to rip a 8’ by 4’ and 4’ front and back of blade. I might be wrong but that’s a lot of space either way that other tools could be using. I’d be very surprised if the cut wouldn’t still need a clean up pass when ripping a full sheet on a panel saw. I think I’d sooner have two cabinet saw as a double table saw island than a panel saw too, one for rip one for cross, actually make that 3, and one for rebates etc.
A half lap joint...🙄
You’ve missed the point fella.
One of those simple jobs that would drive me totally insane trying to work out.
Still insane seeing it work 😂
🙄
This means nothing dude, comment or don’t if all you’re gonna put is an emoji, not work the paper it’s written on.
@@HewAndAweHey, it's still viewer engagement on your part. And there's a dude who commented with emojis also, you even "liked" it.
Beautiful as always m8👍🏴 although I have domino Envy 😄😕
Cheers dude, I think the patent is up soon, so brace yourself for cheap versions. Maybe someone will make a better version, if thats possible.
@@HewAndAwe don't no if it's possible make better version but if someone can make a cheaper version id have one. Maybe one day I'll justify buying it.
@@michaelwillson6847 the time you save dude with one, it pays for itself. Trouble is the used domino’s are almost the price of new, it’s mad!!! 😔
@@HewAndAwe yea convenience does seem and sound amazing. A actually just had quick look not sure what they are brand new but FB market place has few between 350 and 600 a seen. 🤔🤔
@@michaelwillson6847 lol eBay is a different story! 😂
Everytime I see an Infill hammer, it reminds me of the Studley Tool Cabinet one. They're classy. Nice job.
They’re wonderful to use to, 4 business ends, and small enough to get you hand round the top for real controlled blows.
Recently you asked if we wanted music in your videos. Maybe I missed the next poll which presumably asked if we wanted any sound at all. Anyway, your last two shorts have not had any sound
Have the tool noise in there with Tool playing softly underneath.
Yep, they’re old video with copyright music in so had to use with out sound.
💯👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍻✌🏻🇺🇲
Cheer Robert 🍻🍻🍻
That’s what I use and feel a lot safer being able to put a little weight forward.
Exactly, those long ones I see used they’ve never had a board flip into their face (YET)
Nice job , rebuilt a few of these 🙋🏼♂️🏴👍🏻
Curious what grease did you use on the rise and fall?
@@HewAndAwe just spray with motorcycle chain grease
Uh, a sled is not a waste of time if you're a noobie, don't own any planes and don't want to, and have access to a planer and narrow jointer. Just saying.
You’ve missed h the e point 🤦🏻♂️ just saying.
Невысказанность форм в задумчивость приводит.
The music helped with that 🖖
Simple, but still beautiful, I would definitely have that in my house
Thank you! I’ve had a few pees say that but it’s never sold, wtf am I doing wrong 😑
@@HewAndAwe nothing m8 the fact you can't sell it is a joke.
Simple yea ok m8😂😂
It’s simple looking, wasn’t simple getting curved board made into a straight chair granted 😇
@@HewAndAwe certianly ain't simple m8 never in month of Sundays would a manage that.
@@michaelwillson6847 I think you underestimate yourself mate 😬
@@HewAndAwe maybe but that's a hell of a build. Maybe once a get caught up might look at sommit like it.
That's one I've never thought of, sanding while shitting 😂😳🤣
Nor me dude, thought it sold the point of how many days of sanding went into that lid 😆
That was completely different
I do try 😂
You gonna switch tch from the kapex?
Nooo… if I didn’t have the kapex I’d buy the Bosch though.
I've got one. It's epic
In softwood that’s impressive 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙏
It’s funny I find them easier than hardwood, the compression factor is in my favour.
Smashing
Best mallet I own dude, if you can get one you’ll see what I mean! 🍻🍻🍻
Just the job
If you are lucky enough to find one BUY it!!! There was someone trying to replicate them in the US but not sure that ever came to fruition.
I stand to be corrected but i doubt we have any small mills like this anywhere near Sydney. Merchants yes, but they'd all be shipping in from long distances and adding the haulage free to their expensive city rent. Good to see a small mill surviving well
Sydney is a far cry from the country side dude, here in Suffolk is country side, but yeah London (the shit hole) is the same, merchants only.
Why not pocket holes?
Pocket holes don’t allow for seasonal movement 👍
@@HewAndAwethis design doesn't allow for much movement either though. The first block you attached was tight to the stringer, if the opposing block was attached the same, and the top expands across the grain(as wood does) these will either deflect the stringer or cause the joint to fail. If this is a narrow table, it won't matter, it's if this is a wide table, this will cause problems. The solution is to install them looser to allow movement across the grain.
@@TheJueston Theres a difference between NO movement and enough movement, pocket holes have none! That was the question and the reason for my answer. This isn't my first rodeo son, and you clearly don't know what you're talking about. Firstly that first block wast attached to the apron, thats what it's called, not a stringer, we're not building aircraft or ships. So how tight that block was is immaterial as it's only going to pull out or go into the mortice (as wood does) during seasonal movement. As for the movement across the grain you clearly saw that button attached to the stretcher had a larger mortice allowing for the expansion and contraction across the grain! Stick to your day-job fella.
@@HewAndAweit's weird you don't have more engagement on your videos with your thoughtful and insightful responses.
Finally got a dw733 and my power supply cuts out on start up fortunately I have an electrician friend but he’s dead busy. It’s just sitting there grinning at me until he can sort things out.
Why’s that? I didn’t have that issue with the 733. Loudest tool I’ve ever had!!!
As Austin Powers might say, groovy...
“Oh, Behave’l 😂
Lovely bit of kit mine gets its fair share of use.
Same here! Mine needs sharpening though… like all my blades 🤦🏻♂️
I hate doing dovetails in softwood.
It’s a funny one, I personally prefer softwood, using the compression factor to your advantage makes all the difference 👍

Awesome serving board Ben. It looks really good and I like the unusual design. Great work. 👍
Thank you, the usual designs bore me so…
Shorts game strong!
Cheers dude! 🍻🍻🍻
Agree. I have a pretty crap mitre saw but is still useful. I just have a very basic crosscut sled plus a decent tracksaw and can't believe some of the crazy whistle and bell sleds people suggest. Picked up the mitre guage via your link.I was getting by with my modified supplied junk. Link goes straight to the Banggood site. Hopefully that works for you as it isn't obvious going through through the process. Will comment back when it turns up.
The size they make them too 🤦🏻♂️ it’s all for clicks in the end… yeah that should be all good mate 🖖
Arrived in 8 days. Like you, I chuckled lifting it out of the box. Beautifully built and all the functions you might need are there with fantastic accuracy. Dialed in straight out of the box.
@davidsmethurst4318 ah-man! Glad you’re happy with it!!! 😊 8 days though, how comes? I only had to order the fence which was already in the country, was quite a surprise, I walked out of my flat nearly tripped over it and was like wtf is that, I haven’t bought anything… and then like if that’s what I think it is I have to wait a week plus to open it on camera ffs, like ya mom telling you you can’t open your Christmas presents every day till I could 🤦🏻♂️
I live in the New Forest. I was lucky. Deliveries only come when an eclipse coincides with the Aurora Borealis.
i was thinking the same, 1 question though; even with a jig the chisel might be place just a little bit different then the time before and thus would get a slightly diff angle. A bit to shallow and you only sharpen the heel and a bit more steep and you end up still doing a secondary bevel. How do you make sure you are consistent? I use the Lie Nielsen style set up block (stops for the angle) getting it exactly the angle seems difficult to me but do you have any problems? regards
Depends, are we talking from a regrind or getting the edge back? From a regrind I don’t take that chisel out till it’s done including honing. A touch up grind just to get the edge back I do it a lot more often and I’m making my hand sharpening better in the process so I don’t really notice what you’re saying cause yeah that absolutely does my head in, especially the wider the chisel is the more it pisses me off. Having said all that I’m really getting to the point where I’m thinking all this is bullshit, as long as it’s a square grind and razor sharp I’m happy, I’ve 5 sets or so of chisels and I keep my fine work chisels as are till the last minute too the use them.
@@HewAndAwe getting the edge back i ment. I am just a bit ocd about a skewed bevel after that. Regrind i do on the tormek because that shit just eats your stones away and those nice shaptons i wish to keep in a good state. I was just wondering what you do and if i missed some awesome tip or something. thanks for the fast reply
I have the 040 model and it is also very nice :)
That’s the little version right?
@@HewAndAwe Right, but the upgraded version with the bigger handles. The basic model is the 003
@@natalirivero467 I had to play the vid back to see ,was the first thing I noticed was the handles being splayed out and thought that’s better!
@@HewAndAwe Yeah, it has better ergonomics and I also like the way it looks :)
My screwfix cheap and nasty planner thicknesser taught me this trick, because it's the only way to get a result from using it.
Is that one of those bench top jobs?
@HewAndAwe ha yes spent a day trying to set up the planer bed, got it dialled in ,went to use it the next day never moved it must have hurt it's feeling's from the verbal abuse the day before because it was back to cutting B&Q quality the first pass.
@whatsthepoint202 setting them up them up is a nightmare, you may get lucky and it’s an hours job, you may get very unlucky and takes a couple of days as has to me once, it’s one of those jobs I really hate doing, so much so last time I used thread lock on it all - the heavy duty stuff and haven’t had to revisit that job in a few years now. The mechanicals levelling out the tables are prehistoric to say the least 😔 oh and the tables are to short on all of them!
@HewAndAwe cheers I actually never thought of using thread lock
