I hear ya, difficult not to read them though and they have to be responded to so the list clears up and I’ve made sure I’ve replied to the decent people. Other than that I can only hide their comment which is like I’m hiding something or block them, which inevitably happens anyway 😂 mind you Facebook comments a way worse, they’re not even clever comments just darn right rude, but there I can tear them a new one with out worry of FB repercussions. Great video Ben. Really informative and a proper no holds barred review. I have a mitre saw and a UJK mitre fence for the table saw. They both took time to set up. It’s useful to have both but I use the mitre saw far more than the fence on the table saw. Hope you are having a good Easter.

Hi Ben. I made a mistake. I have just measured the mitre slots and they are in fact 14.75mm. Therefore there appears to be no solution to the problem. I shall try and talk to Charnwood and let you know.
@@colincrannis8712 I just looked up online your saw and says 15-19mm mitre slot width 🤷🏻♂️ is the 15mm slot the sliding carriage and the 19mm the slots either side of the blade?
Hi Ben. It seems that Charnwood are telling porkies. I have just re-checked and the mitre slots either side of the blade and on the sliding carriage all measure 14.75mm on my digital caliper. Charnwood do sell a steel mitre bar, but it has no adjustment for slop. In a word - 'crap'. I am considering getting rid of the saw unless I can come up with a solution.

Nice one dude. Considered dropping the mitre saw at one point but, decided for rough cutting/sizing, it was essential - for all the reasons you mention. I mill (on my over router) or plunge saw my finish mitres for furniture though.👍

Great vid Ben, loved it…. Educational as always… and your right about the dewalt chop saw… no matter how often I reset it up I struggle to get 100% accuracy….. even with a new blade…. Great bit of kit though for construction…. 😁 just have check and check again when I’m doing more precise work…..

I tried the Bosch glide which is also a monster, unfortunately I haven’t tried it making furniture precise angled work, there needs to be competition against the Kapex to drive prices down looked last night and can’t believe what it costs now! 🤯

Yeah it is, wasn’t really my point dude, you can’t cut to length using it. The idea is to keep your angled cut going behind the stop block, but it doesn’t, so seems like a gimmick to me 🖖
I'm a home diy woodworker with 5 children, so buying top-notch equipment isn't in my budget. I have the Dewalt miter saw and that thing sucks. I have found that using a MDF sled on my table saw is way more accurate for crosscut. I enjoy your videos and the creative projects you have made. Keep em coming... two fingers
Yeah if not most all bar one mitre saw sucks it seems, I haven’t had anyone say xxx mitre saw they have cuts perfect mitres.

I've picked up a few Chinese woodworking tools from Banggood, not all of em are good, but there are a few little gems in amongst em. And they don't cost an arm and a leg. The thing about CZcams woodworkers that make me laugh is the guys that have huge workshops but talk about " small spaces"😅 and they spend all their time organising yet never seem to make anything..
I’ve had some right crap from them, they don’t make it to a vid not worth my time, what I have found is some say said tool is the bollocks but I then get one and it’s not fit for purpose. To be honest I think my 5m by 5m workshop is small, some think it’s huge, one things for sure there’s never enough space!
Agree with you on the chop saw , id a crosscut in the shop but always went to the chop , never made a sled as i had the luxury of a wadkin pp18 and your right about the depth of cut on a table saw with an 18" blade you get around 7 3/4" cut

I don’t have any kinds, that I know of that is. Most of the time I’m happy about that fact for just that reason. Like I say dude, they’re a luxury but at that price for all you get and quality it’s less of a luxury and more like it. Meant to say to you, to put Facebook into perspective in the last 28 days I gained 43 subscribers… it’s just not what it used to be FB. 🤦🏻♂️ in short you’re doing better than me with out the days of editing 👌

But probably cost as much if not more than this whole woodworking hobby business. Yea a must say they both seem like proper quality items and certianly something I'll think about when a get the table saw upgraded they'd be washed on the hobby saws. Am hoping to upgrade the table saw within the year just not sure what to yet. FB side I'm certainly not lighting the world up with FB spoke to few other folk who have said insta would be worth shot but again not my forty but might look at it. As long as it ticks along and gains little bit work from it I'll be happy. Gonna look at few different things for spring summer and some turning so maybe that'll generate some interest take it easy hope your doing orite. Catch up soon. 👍🏴

Thanks for this review. I checked out the Incra earlier this week, but couldn’t justify its price. I have kapex which always stays accurate.
It’s mad when you think about it, the mark up must mental and for what really is a luxury imo. The above price bracket is more palatable imo and it’s better.
I agree. There are use cases for having both for sure. There have been a handful of situations where I needed to use a miter guage to make a cut and using the one that came with my saw is infuriating. It's never accurate and I spend a ton of time trying to get it to cut accurately . I'd love to have a nice miter guage but like you said, the ones worth having have a hefty price tag on them. But could I get rid of my miter saw? No way
What mitre saw do you have? Are the long mitre cuts bang on?
@HewAndAwe the saw I have is basically cheap garbage. Can't make an accurate cut ever. BUT if I have a long piece of stock that I need to cut down I'm not doing it on my table saw sled. I'd love to have a nice accurate festool miter saw though. Like you said it's point and shoot. But all I'm saying is there are definitely use cases for having both

Beautiful mitre gauge. Given what I make I love my PARF table and my Festool track saw. Safer than both a table saw and mitre saw as well as great dust collection. And the PARF table is a great clamping aid. Oh the accuracy of the PARF table is phenomenal. It comes down to what you make. At my age I'm not making 300 pound tables.
I’ve never gone down that route cause there’s so much more a table saw can do that I need that a track saw can’t, one thing I’ve never looked into is cutting small bits with a track saw, but I guess you use the mitre saw? What if you need to rip a long piece but the stock you’re needing to rip it from is to thin to support the track?
For me it's pretty hard to cut crown with a mitre gauge.
I was coming at this in the furniture making realm of things rather than 2nd fix/carpentry 👌
Fully agree Ben having both is really good and each have there uses. I also like my circular saw to break stuff down in the first place. I wouldn't just have a mitre gauge on the table saw and no mitre saw. I tried it when some scumbag stole my previous one. I've now got a cheaper one which is OK for rough cuts and building work. When I'm feeling flush with the £££ I'll buy a Festool but it's not a priority for me at the moment.

Agree. I have a pretty crap mitre saw but is still useful. I just have a very basic crosscut sled plus a decent tracksaw and can't believe some of the crazy whistle and bell sleds people suggest. Picked up the mitre guage via your link.I was getting by with my modified supplied junk. Link goes straight to the Banggood site. Hopefully that works for you as it isn't obvious going through through the process. Will comment back when it turns up.

Arrived in 8 days. Like you, I chuckled lifting it out of the box. Beautifully built and all the functions you might need are there with fantastic accuracy. Dialed in straight out of the box.

I only had to order the fence which was already in the country, was quite a surprise, I walked out of my flat nearly tripped over it and was like wtf is that, I haven’t bought anything… and then like if that’s what I think it is I have to wait a week plus to open it on camera ffs, like ya mom telling you you can’t open your Christmas presents every day till I could 🤦🏻♂️
I live in the New Forest. I was lucky. Deliveries only come when an eclipse coincides with the Aurora Borealis.
Feedback on the mitre guage - Excellent. I use it for most cuts. With this, the fence and a small basic crosscut sled I can make the vast majority of possible cuts. Using it on my saw is like polishing a t**d but it is a joy. One other plus is that I am tight for storage space. I can swing this to 70 degrees plus and make it slim in enough to fit in a tight spot. Then back to 90 degrees for most cuts and it's bang on every time.
Good points! I'm thinking that if I get rid of my table saw and get a festool MFT table together with the track saw and also get a Festool Kapex I might be good. I have a rather smalll speca so getting rid of the table saw would save me some valuable space. Thanks for the great video!
Have you checked the prices lately, bloody hell, I looked and a lot of what I have that’s now second hand I can sell for than what I paid for it years ago, the Kapex 1500 quid, I payed 1k for it, it’s all gone bonkers!!!
@@HewAndAwe I know. It's crazy. I do have the track and track saw though together with a few other Festool tools so it would make a very nice combination. Expensive, yes, but optimized for my needs, yes?
@danielrisberg2112 festool kinda have you buy the balls with just one small design the plug it cable, when I discovered that I was in heaven, even changed all my none festool tools with their adapters (which sadly are discontinued) bliss not tripping up on cables!!!

I have a Kapex 60. It’s out. You can’t adjust the left and right 45 stops. You can adjust 0 and when things bang on, only right side 45 is, left goes over 45. Festool collected it, replaced the base (as the casting is the 45 stop). When it came back, all 3 angles were out as they’d got it somewhere near for all but what good is that? Told them and they weren’t interested. Just stopped replying. They also chewed up the torx head screws and gashed the workpiece support. Replaced no issue but not the point. I still haven’t sorted it, will need to shim it with beer can or something.
There’s a trick to this, you need some gauges, you know the thickness gauges the ones you have everything from 0.01mm upwards take them apart… at one side of the plate that has the positive stops on it, looses that up, you’ll notice there’s a big gap between the plate and the saw, you need something to put in that gap something that’ll take most of that space up so you’re left with about 0.75mm or less. Then use the feeler gauge strips to find zero of the saw, fix in place, drive those torx screws home and done, me I leave those shims in, just in case I have to go back to it… I don’t really care if a tool looks pretty just as long as it does what it should. Hope that makes sense?? 🖖

I have the Jessum miter gauge and love it for what I do. I have a Dewalt Miter saw and just am not as comfortable to make precise repeatable cuts with my miter saw as I am with my gauge on the table saw. Personal choice, but appreciate your review. That, and I try whenever possible to not buy Chinese as really don't look good in that Chinese military uniform, so I opted for the Jessum.

@@HewAndAwe I have an old 3 HP Delta Unisaw. It is going on 45 years old now, but cuts pretty well. Hate that it tilts into the fence for bevel cuts, cranks hard as hell to raise and lower the blade, but it's all I got and haven't wanted to spend $3K plus to replace it.

Hi Ben. I have a Charnwood W629 table saw, which has 16.5mm mitre slots. I cannot see the rationale for this as I am unable to buy after-market accessories. If anyone knows of a solution, I would love to hear about it. Coupled with the appalling dust collection means I am very disappointed with the saw. I would also say I have relegated my Sip mitre saw to the shed as it really isn't very accurate. Keep up the good work.

Oh yeah, table saw set up: what the guy was saying in my comments was kind of what you showed. Your mitre slot is a fixed datum on a table saw so, you set your blade to that so they both track in parallel. When you set up your mitre gauge, because the slot is the fixed datum, you also set it to that. Though, once blade and slit are in parallel, it doesn't matter too much which you set to. However, on my saw - as it's one I built myself - the saw itself (an upside down Mafell KSP 85) is the fixed datum. I can't adjust it. Instead, is set my mitre slot to the blade. Hence why I set my fences to the blade also. The guy in my comments could get his head round it. Whatever. My set up cuts square af 😉👍
Thanks for that dude, I don’t understand how it’s physically possible to set the gauge to the mitre slot that the gauge is already in inc bar, it’s not like there’s a wall to register off of if that makes sense?
@@HewAndAwe You have to push the front of the mitre bar down a little. Should give you a couple mm to reference off. Like I say though, if you've made sure your slot and blade are parallel, it doesn't much matter which you reference off.
@BischBaschBosch thanks dude, I’m seeing why I was confused now, I wasn’t just some chap making hot air to confuse the whole thing making out there’s some special way that’s better 🤷🏻♂️ No worries, appreciate you taking the time to settle that one, I spent ages online trying to work out wtf was he on about. I still think he’s wrong as setting the fence to the blade isn’t as simple as setting it to the mitre slot. I’ll stick to what I know works 😂

First you have the normal prefix that begins with an h and ends with a colon and two slashes.
Then "archive"
Then a dot
Then "li"
Then a slash
Then "52imY"
@@HewAndAwe As your video shows at 12:48, it can be hard to align to a blade. Even new blades aren't always perfectly flat. Best procedure there is to mark an "X" near a tooth, raise the blade as high as it'll go, rotate the blade so the "X" is just above the table near you, and zero the dial gauge in your slot on the "X". Then rotate the blade so the "X" is just above the table far from you and see the difference via the dial gauge to the new position of the "X". If it's 0 you're good to go, otherwise you need to align your blade and miter slow.
I find the easiest way to setup a miter gauge is to take a typical woodworking square that has a thicker handle than blade. With the miter gauge removed from its slot, rest the handle against the miter bar and then with the adustment loose, rotate the fence until it contacts the square's blade. Tighten and you're done. Make sure you use the side of the miter bar that doesn't have the size adjustment do-hickies.
Another way to align a miter gauge is with a commercial device called the "MiterSet" (search for it on shopify) or making something similar in your shop.

Hi, Eric, yes it’s the Starrett, the student 150mm square metric. If your saw has the standard 3/4” 19mm slot then it will fit 👍

@@HewAndAwe I'm sorry my post wasn't very clear, I was referring to the new fence you unboxed...not the miter slot bar. I would like to replace my old vega miter fence with the one you unboxed. I was just wondering if the fence slots are in the same location as my old vega fence. See my reply below. And yes I would like to find a metric rule for my Starrett 6" combination square, I'll check on ebay. Thank you so much for the reply back.

It’s a funny one LOTS of people will want to use the above on a site saw but the fence is just to big, even the gauge is pardon the pun cutting it fine, half of it would be hanging off the saw or being sawn in half 😂 none the less you can buy second hand Wadkin like mine that I made a vid off for less than the cost of a new site saw, a bit of work involved though, lovely project though to restore if that’s your bag. Tools of yesterday year are going for silly cheap at the moment!!! New parts are £££ though so look for the best you can get. If you ever go down that rabbit hole hit me up with what you find and I’ll say if it’s a good deal/idea 👍
@@HewAndAwe I'll have to come up with the coin for a shed first. ATM I'm in the backyard with a pop-up gazabo and the terraced house overhang. Missus is less than chuffed at the amount of "stock" under tarps and in piles on the family outdoor space. So, everything has to be mobile across the grass to the tiny crap storage shed that is ready for the skip. Life. All the good hobbies cost money. Can't turn a side hustle due to Housing Regs. Right then, fella, where shall I start. Umm, let's see. I know, how about from the beginning. It's time for Jackanory, Jackanory, Jackanory. Only people of a certain age will understand what I mean by that and remember the tune.
Let me explain to the uneducated of you out there in CZcams land what it means. Jackanory was a daily children's TV show where a celebrity would read out stories from a book. It was enjoyed by children and adults alike.
It started way back in the mid 1960s on British television and finished in the 1990s i think. It got its name from the nursery rhyme.
"I'll tell you a story about Jack-a-Nory.
And now my story's begun;
I'll tell you another one about Jack and his brother.
And now my story's done."
Despite popular belief, it had nothing to do with the entertainer Max Bygraves. He did adopt the saying, "I'm going to tell you a story," mimicking the catch frase of the Jackanory opening line. This soon became his trademark early on in his career.
If everyone is ready and comfortable, then I'll begin. When I first worked with wood aged 17 in 1979, I had but a few simple tools. Tools which apart from those handed down by my father, grandfather and his father and so on, I got from Harods hardware in Sydenham, South East London. Not to be confused with Harrods department store in Knighsbridge, London. I wonder if their tools were gold plated?
Later in years, i got the majority of my tools from Mandels home improvements in Forest Gate, London, and then later on in the 1980s from the B&Q depot in Sydenham, just off of Sydenham Park Road.
B&Q is better known in the USA as ' The Home Depot'. Let's face it, guys. Most makes were crap from the depot. Cheap n cheerful, one time use only tools mainly.
So, one day, I was watching a guy on CZcams make a set of cabinet draws. I wanted to do the things he did, so i got myself a mitre saw and a few other cheep tools from B&Q for about 150 quid. For those of you who don't know what a quid is. In old money, a quid = £1. That's rocket science for you.
He made it look easy but it wasn't. I didn't have a scooby what I was doing and wasted so much wood trying. No, really, did you? I wonder why, umm, because I'm stupid? No, it was because the saw i paid 100 quid for was crap. The angles didn't match up when i used the saw to the left or right or even when setting to the standard 45° angle.
No matter how hard I tried, i just couldn't get the cuts to line up. What an Idiot i was. It would have been better to drop that 100 quid in the coffee cup of the guy selling the Big Issue every day outside of HMV. At least then, it would have been put to better use by giving him 10 nights or more sleeping in a bed and hot meals in his belly every day.
I did my research and bought a decent saw off eBay. A Makita 305 mm compound mitre saw, which I still have. It has a smooth sliding action that has a positive click every time you set the degrees angle, and although it is now almost 15 years old, it's as good now as the day i got it.
I look after my tools and they look after me. At the time, it was considered to be quite expensive, costing me a wacking £350. It's strong and built like a brick 5hit house. Unlike the B&Q saw, which came with lots of extras and felt flimsy compared to the Makita.
The Makita came with two blades. One for ripping and the other with a fine tooth. It also came with the usual spanner and two Allen or Hex keys. Oh, and a 5 year guarantee, a decent book on how to ioperate and a parts list at the back for spares. Sweeeet. I gave the B&Q saw away to a jumble sale, which I'm sure would help someone out if only for making simple straight up and down, in and out cuts.
Then, I wanted this electric table saw advertised all over CZcams. Then i wanted a decent dust extraction system and this electric tool and that electric tool, but before I knew what had hit me, I ended up with a garage full of expensive electrical tools, most of which i hardly ever use. Hand tools, OMG. Half of them i didn't know what they were or how to use them but they looked good, impressive.
Then, I added up the total value of what this stupid bunt spent. Change the letter b for a capital C, that best describes me. I wasted so much money in those days, Idiot. The grand total for the electrical tools was a whopping £17,852.48p. The total for the hand tools was £2,780.42p. As Delboy would say, you plonker!
Did these shops on eBay see me coming, I should hope not, but then Big Brother is always watching us, right, Ben?
I was guilty of what most women do when they see things online and want it. It was time to admit that i was a right tart, a shameful shopaholic.
Like you, I watched woodworkers on CZcams constantly to learn anything and everything. I was soon to be the proud owner of the title, "Rabbit Hole King." A title given to me my mates, even my wife had a dig.
I went down so many rabbit holes that i was in danger of turning into a mole. Some of these woodworking channels were good, some were bad, but the majority gave good advice.
However, like you, there was this one guy, an American. He was in his 60s who looked dishevelled, almost homeless, looking and worked out of his double sized garage. A well-known and quite popular channel apparently called, 'The American Woodworker restorer', i think that's the full name. He specialised in the restoration of antique furniture. Anyway, what a tool.
He said, "Any wannabe woodworker who uses electrical power tools will never be good at making anything out of wood." It seemed as though in every video he went on and on about the same old 5hit. He even started slagging off this method and that method as if he were the supreme all-knowing all being woodworking champion of the universe. Bollocks, was he heck. I watched three of his 45 minute long videos. That was enough, trust me. He caused more damage to the furniture he was meant to be restoring than actually repairing it. And his skill with a chisel, what skill. It was as though the man was blind. Even after drawing a line with a pencil, when he offered up 5he chisel, the edge was 2 or 3 mm away and not even straight. OMG, hinges, they never fitted properly. Gaps around the wonkey edges and they were never flat, neither. Seriously, that man should get his eyes tested, and if that doesn't work. Then, his channel should come with a warning. A declaration that his channel is not a 'how you should do it' but how he does it!
Even when replacing missing bits of veneer, he messed that up. Nothing lined up at all. I'm better at drilling out broken dowels than he was. But that man messed up by ripping into the sourounding wood. Melting colour3d wax to fill splits and cracks that were too small for slithers of wood to be inserted. Two things. First, he didn't use the appropriate colour. Secondly, he didn't use enough as there was always a dip or cavern.
Oh, and get this people. He went on about how American antique furniture should be repaired using original methods, techniques, and materials. Ok, i get that only and totally agree, but he didn't always follow his teachings, the hypocritical fool.
We all know that the skilled men of old used hot glue, right people? So why use Gorilla and Elmer's glue to stick together the legs on a supposedly 17th centry Elizabethan chair and an Edwardian swivel chair both made in England? Both had hot glue used on them previously?
Both Gorilla and Elmer's glues are man made synthetics, right people? He had a pot of hot glue on the side behind him with a thermometer sticking out, ready to use. So why not use it? We could see the pot was still half full from when he glued 3 dowels into each end of the two stabiliser struts of a 1960s side table about 3 minutes before he started work on the real antiques. WTF! He was a complete and utter wanker. Shame his father wasn't!
The epilogue to this story is simple. I have a reasonable understanding of how to use this vast array of tools I have at my disposal. The only issue i have to deal with now, is how to perfect my skills or the lack of them. You can watch all the tuition videos in the world, but unless you can convert that visual and verbal knowledge to actually being good with your hands to make you a good woodworker, then all the tools in China will never help you!

I love to make stuff out of wood. I try my best at making anything, and everything. Even drift wood if it has the right look. I even have a wood turning lathe which is fun and the skill using it is easy once you know how. Like my dad would always say. "Son, practice makes perfect so go practice. Just don't go blind doing it".
Ben, I came across your videos by accident, months ago while looking for ideas to help me make a bench for my garage. I wanted to build one for a long time but it had to be strong enough to take my weight, don't ask.😂
I liked the cut of your jib which is why I subscribe to your channel. Im in the middle of trying to move house right now so im having to watch the pennies. Jesus, I've had to give up my weekly visit to the pub on a Sunday. That's how bad things have got, so i understand where you are coming from. Once I get myself straight, I'll support you more, but for now, all I can do is watch your videos and leave you long and hopefully interesting entertaining comments.
Lastly, any news on finding a new workshop? I don't do social media. It's all 5hit stiring and bull5hit slinging crap and full of trolls. My family thinks I'm crazy for not using Facebook, but that's where I found most of the trolls and 5hit stiring bunts, with a C, not a b, were.

It was only when I sat back and looked at what I had spent on crap tools and then in my mind saw a figure of the amount of time they cost me, it all amounted to me thinking these peeps who say “a sharp bit of flint will see you nice” “Its not the tools its the maker” etc etc then I realised those people, for what they are, idiots.
Making a living from making furniture isn’t about spending all of gods hours tuning said crap tool, smoking a pipe on a lazy Sunday afternoon…
I saw, (pun intended) the money spent on inferior tools that cost me so much time, that time and money can be made back by having tools that get me to that point where I can finesse to perfection faster.
BUT alas, we are in the world of glue screw and Im a furniture maker era, no pride, no design, hacked together, and most defiantly no idea how to fix problems bar wood filler and paint.
It’s surprising how tribal some people get about it, they’re the same when it comes to politics if not as bad, it’s pathetic!

Was an interesting one the incra, when I watched bish bash Bosch’s vid and he confirmed everything I thought about the fence I knew I wasn’t off my head, in fact I was hoping he’d praise it and change my mind. None the less there’s no way I’m paying 400 for a mitre gauge/fence, the mark up on that must be 350 profit or the likes, for me it kinda feels reminiscent of buying a square which shouldn’t cost that much. If you think about the china version it’s 200 and that includes shipping and cost of materials, so what’s their profit- kinda puts it into perspective if I’m making any sense here 🤷🏻♂️

you complain that you couldn't afford the mitre fence but your miter saw is twenty times as expensive same of most of your tools it is apples with pears your setup is for 99 procent not affordable, i am glad you can but dont talk about what is expensive or that your mitre saw is better ofcourse if you pay a 1000 pounds on a saw
There’s a difference between affording “can’t do without tools” and affording “luxury tools” fella which I made clear in the vid. And I’m not going to make assumptions on what’s affordable to everybody, 99% was a little bit of an exaggeration! Some can afford what ever tool they want as a hobbyist some can’t, I started out with the shitist tools money can buy, as does everyone. You’re also talking of today’s prices, which are a HUGE cry from what I paid for them back when.
It's called building up your tools based on your knowledge and experience. Ben is probably one of the if not the best furniture maker in the UK and ive seen a few not just on here either before u spout that. We all start from ground up unless your born with diamond encrusted arse hole and to quote your 99% most of us are not.

@scrotiemcboogerballs4967 I believe so to dude, although a small part of it, sharing is more so but bloody pointless if it’s shared and still no one watches it, say it’s shared to a place no one is interested in that niche, or has few friends, what’s the point in that being a metric 🤦🏻♂️ What I have learnt is that the algorithm won’t work much for small channels in the sense it’ll push channels with bigger followers more so than small fry. People hurt my vids by skipping and also not watching right to the last second, yeah that’s a thing I get penalised on cause everyone clicks off when they see/hear the start of the “final thought” 🤦🏻♂️
I didn't realise that. I thought you just had to be watched for the first 30 seconds. I wonder, to boost some numbers on your channel whether it would be a good idea to make some stuff that your hobbyist could relate to making. I live the craftsmanship in your videos, but personally doing intricate precise joinery isn't for me. Is there somewhere in the middle you could go sometimes that is skilled but would be in the reach of your hobbyist maker?
