Which is faster? The (F) Train Vs. The (G) Train
The (G) Train is the only subway line (besides the shuttles) that does not enter Manhattan. This makes it a pretty good choice for Brooklyn/Queens Travel. In this video, we put it to the test and see which is faster, the (F) Train that goes through Manhattan to get between Brooklyn and Queens, and the (G), which goes straight through.

    To address the multiple comments saying you should've done this while the F was still on 53 St, I wonder what the times would've been if the wait times at Rockefeller Center were subtracted. At least for the southbound trip, because 18:40 shows a clear winner for the northbound trip. Yet the F via 53rd isn't the default, so it's good that you didn't stop the timer, because that's what most people will face within our lifetimes lol.

    Considering that the F train runs to Jamaica and the G train runs to Court Square, it depends on how long service is on the line and how it would impact delays and any service changes. However the F train is a reliable line that runs fast between Coney Island and Broadway-Lafayette St, but although the M train has less trains running during the Midday hours. The G however is a reliable train because it doesn’t reach Manhattan, but depends on how long you wait.. for example from Hoyt Street to Metropolitan Avenue is about a 25 minute ride, but service are upgrading their signal system making trains run faster than they usually are back in 2022 and 2023. To answer this question, I hardly doubt that these two lines via the Culver Line are fast trains. Mostly in Manhattan, more F trains run during the Midday hours to either Kings Hwy or Coney Island. Although they should make the G train run more frequently instead of whatever trains have scheduled for the AM/PM or Midday trains. As of the F train that shares the M between Broadway-Lafayette Street and Rockefeller, it causes more train congestion and delays

    Ret. C/R. In the day, running time given the F was 1 hr, 26 min. Rule of thumb was half hour 179 st. to Queens Plaza, half hour more to Jay St, the rest to Stillwell. I say cutting off the G from Queens Plaza is a bourgeois attempt to stop the hoi polloi from riding what is now the personal vehicle of the newly gentrified Court Sq.-Brklyn waterfront - Fulton St. corridor. Let the poor suffer the longer ride, like you did

    It seems unreasonable to compare a route specifically designed to connect Brooklyn with Queens to a patch-up of two lines designed to connect each of those boroughs with Manhattan. And this would have been true even when the F and G both ran between, say, Bergen Street and Queens Plaza. The F didn't even go to Brooklyn between the 1954 Culver connection and the 1967 Chrystie Street connection. Its return to the Culver line was made inevitable by the installation of the express track's between 34th and West 4th. The IND route designations, at least until the MTA swapoed the north ends of the B and C, rigidly conformed to the trunk and north-end radial lines of a service, but the south ends were often reassigned. As an extrene example, the D train at various times during my lifetime terminated in Manhattan, ran to Coney Island via the Culver line, ran to Coney Islsnd via the Brighton Line, and now runs to Coney Island via the West End Line. The GG/G has always been a Brooklyn-Queens crosstown, although its endpoints have shufted south a bit.

    The Story I'm about to tell was over 35 years ago when there was no 2nd Ave line & the E & F train went through the 53rd St tube. I got on the F train at Parsons Blvd in Queens heading to 4th Ave in Brooklyn meaning going through the city. When I got to Queens Plaza, The G was across the platform heading into Brooklyn. (G train Used to begin in Forest Hills) I took the train to Bergen St to change back to F train. I was drinking two beers, I had a bag of Trophy's roasted nuts I was eating. I also remembered the car number. I got off at Bergen St. When the following F train came after the G left, I was surprised to find the same car with my plastic bag of two empty Becks bottles & my peanuts. So back then, it really didn't make a difference...

  • @silverskyscraper1179
    @silverskyscraper1179 Před 15 hodinami

    This is not something special to talk about. It is obvious that the G train would get to Court Square first. There are less stops, far less people getting on and off and the “G” makes no across the platform connect. Oh and did I mention it has to share tracks with the “M” in Manhattan….. anyway one of the problems with the F is the “G” train blocking its way a lot. Especially around Church ave in both directions.

    Better test would have been a test of running times between 74th / Roosevelt IND platform and Bergen Street. You need four riders at the same time. There are two races for each rider. The overall clock starts as soon as one if the four trains arrives at Roosevelt. The individual clock starts when each rider's train shows up. The overall race ts essentially a foot race. The individual race will reveal the quickest way, depending on which train shows up first. Rider 1 takes the first F train to Bergen St direct. No changes. Rider 2 takes the first M train to 23rd St ely and changes for G train to Bergen St. Rider 3 takes first E train to 23rd St - Ely and changes for G train to Bergen St. Rider 4 takes first M train and changes to F train at any 6th Avenue local stop. They have an option to change to any 6th Ave express train, should one be waiting across the platform at Rocky, Bryant, or 34th St / Herald Sq, and change to an F at Broadway-Laffayette. They might catch / pass an F train between 34th and Broadway-Laffayette. First to Bergen wins. The results will vary each time this race is run, but it is a more representative test of how effective the G-train is as a throughput to service further out in Queens, and how much time is lost going through Manhattan conpared to changing and waiting for transfers. These should be considered in any analysis. The shortest time from one's train arriving at Roosevelt and arrival at Bergen will reveal the shortest duration, but may not be the quickest way depending on what shows up first.

    Idk F Train that train is fast dude

  • @mzxeternal
    @mzxeternal Před 16 hodinami

    The G is definitely faster under ideal circumstances, but with a huge "but". If you're coming from the Queens Blvd corridor, just the seriously long walk alone for that transfer and the wait for the G at times at Court Square can erase the time savings pretty quickly. I used to work in Red Hook and would connect to QBL at Roosevelt Ave. The only time in my experience the G was viable wast the evening rush or night Queensbound, where it seemed to be more reliable. Going Southbound from Court Square there were times mid-day you could lose 20 minutes alone making the connection and waiting for the next departing train. In practice, you were better off staying on an F train coming from QBL than gambling on that transfer. If the F comes first at Roosevelt, take it and don't even gamble on an E/G transfer. The G was an underrated gem when it served QBL as well if you wanted to go to Brooklyn, but cutting it at Court Square made it far less useful. From deeper reaches of Queens, nothing beats LIRR Atlantic branch, which really should be made a Rapid Transit route given its depreciation as a LIRR terminal, and would have added utility if they reopened the abandoned but still existing Woodhaven Blvd stop. Great Video as always!

      They could do it in the peak direction in rush hour, but I think it would be pretty unpopular along McDonald Avenue. Most riders still want Manhattan. There was a time when half the F trains did that, but that didn't make too many people other than transit fans happy. The NX was fun too, but who rode it? During the 1964 Worlds Fair someone got the bright idea to run a G express on what was then the GG route, going nonstop from Hoyt-Schermerhorn to Forest Hills. I think I was the only passenger on the eight-car train. It didn't last long.
