  • There aren't many subway stations in New York City that have to tackle with the complex geography of the area around them, however, those that do are incredible works of art. In this video, we take a look at one of those stations, 190th Street on the (A) Line, and we find out why it is one of the deepest stations and why that makes this station one of the most interesting in the subway system.

I find it incredible that a station could be built basically 17 stories below ground in those days with the equipment that they had available

Same. While constructing methods & technology has advanced a lot since the early years of the subway & us being spoiled by the more modern designs of today, we cannot overlook just how amazing some of these original stations are.

It's also level with the Inwood section of Manhattan. I always love how the tunnel by Bennett Ave "sweats" in the summertime.

@@monica012077 That tunnel is wicked slippery when wet -- and it has a down slope heading out to the street.

I love 181st and 190th. 181st edges it out for me with the catwalk running over the tracks.

Actually, I find the prior 181st St. station on the A line more interesting from an architectural viewpoint, as there is a concourse suspended above the tracks running the entire length of the station, which makes it easier to switch between the uptown & downtown platforms, as well as a more pleasant walk to the station exit than along the platform itself.

When I moved to NYC in 1999, I lived my first 3 months in Washington Hts. and this was my station. I enjoyed the station entrance on Fort Washington Ave. by Fort Tryon Park. AT the time the elevators had attendants/operators (as did the 181st Street station) and that lended a nice friendly personal touch. Also this being the 3rd station on the way downtown I always got a seat for the ride. I've fond memories and every so often I go up there to visit Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters.

Funny that a station that used to be my home station and a station i ride by everyday, is now a mystic video. Fun fact, im on an A train leaving the station as im writing this!

Always love NYC subway stations without columns right next to the platform edge (at least for part of the station in this case), every time I’ve been to NYC it feels like those columns cause serious congestion when getting on/off trains, especially at busy stations like Grand Central.

This is my local station. My only wish is that they would clean the station up a bit and finish the work on the uptown platform side.

Your subway system videos are very entertaining and terrifically done. Would you happen to have any information about the IND going under the grand concourse? Info like how much was the concourse torn apart to build the subway underneath? Or do you have any photographs of the concourse as the IND was being built? Thank you very much

This station brings back great memories of visiting Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters when I was a kid. In those days, the old R10 and R1 operated on the A 8th Avenue Express. Great stop, and, in opinion, one of the most unique in the subway system. Paul Messina, New York City.

There used to be a sign beside the staircase going down from Ft Washington to the elevators -- the sign would light up "ELEVATOR RISING" to let you know it's time to move it. I do believe the sign is still there -- just hasn't been used in a few decades. Also I remember there was a sign on a column along the tracks facing the downtown side, some promo being run by The NY World. That's going back quite a while ago in the history of newspapers!

The thumbnail you had for the station looked like there was an old dining car on one of the platforms (though I doubt it was truly a dining car). The last time I was in Upper Manhattan, I took IND 8th Avenue Line to Dyckman-200th Street, so naturally I missed this station.

The 190th Street Station should instead serve the (C) & , as the (A) & should be rerouted to the IND Riverdale Line into The Bronx via another express jump.
These should be the stations on the IND Inwood Line:
    Ⓜ️ Inwood-215th Street
    Ⓜ️ 207th Street
    Ⓜ️ Dyckman Street
    Ⓜ️ 190th Street
    Ⓜ️ 181st Street
    Ⓜ️ 175th Street
These should be the stations on the IND Riverdale Line to Getty Square-Prospect Street:
    Ⓜ️ Getty Square-Prospect Street (express)
    Ⓜ️ Vark Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ Ludlow Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ Culver Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ Valentine Lane (local)
    Ⓜ️ 263rd Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ 259th Street (express)
    Ⓜ️ 252nd Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ 246th Street (express)
Ⓜ️ 236th Street Loop (local only)
    Ⓜ️ 235th Street (express only)
    Ⓜ️ Kappock Street (local)
    Ⓜ️ Inwood Hill Park (local)
    Ⓜ️ Dyckman Street (express)
    Ⓜ️ 168th Street (express)

Must say, the place looks very dreary. Needs brighting-up. The London Underground is also very old, some of it dates back to 1863, but I’ve never seen any part looking as miserable.
