What Is The Enhanced Station Initiative - Should We Return To It?

- You may have noticed a small number of stations in the NYC Subway System that look rather different than the others. Stations that may have been built in the same era as the others, however, look much more modern. Those stations were involved in a program named the Enhanced Station Initiatice a few years back, and in this video, I'll explain the history of the program, and talk we'll discuss the possibility of the MTA returning to it in the future.

The ESI is STRONGER than most people think. It could be the key for people to stop trashing the subway! this is way better than re-NEW-vation
I agree its better than Re-NEW-Vation, as far as the total number of things that's being done, however, I feel like Re-NEW-Vation has more of an effect, as more stations are being refurbished with the program.
@@MysticTransit They should Start with the Decaying stations first
I still think the ESI program is a better option, since they do truly renew components, and at the same time fixing the station, while reNewvations focuses only on repainting, retiling, lighting replacements and drainage replacement
ESI stations look great, but the fact that they didn't always fix huge structural problems with station layouts made it a bit silly.
One example that comes to mind is Prospect Avenue R - the southbound R still only has 1 staircase exit, leading to a 2-3 minute backup of people exiting as each train arrives, making it impossible to enter the station to begin with.
Thanks!
Thanks for the super thanks! I hope you enjoyed the video!
@@MysticTransit I did and Anytime!
I remember when they closed down the E103th street station on the (6) line because of renovations and the trains skipped the downtown side, when they finished uptown side 103rd street station would be skipped so it can also be fixed as well
I feel like Bowery and Chambers St on the J/Z definently has something way more wrong than what is seen as a passenger because there is no way this station hasn't been thoroughly cleaned out years ago, even with it being a J/Z station which these lines get half of its route shut down almost every weekend
and considering its a 4 track station, it could be potentially used for the SAS if it goes into the FiDi
You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth About Both The Bowery & Chambers Street Stations👏👏👏👏👏!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, those are some of the worst looking stations in the system. They desperately need a renovation.
I'd vote to bring the program back, but do only one station at a time.
That will spread out the cost to taxpayers.
And closing a bunch of stations at once will invariably inconvenience people who use more than one closed station.
I do agree on two things ESI was way better, but it was more expensive, time consuming to get it done, and yes Bowery Street & Chambers Street (J) & (Z) Staton should be on top list as a station closure for a major overall.
I agree on closing Bowery but not so much Chambers simply because of the available transfer to the IRT trains. Even though there’s Fulton Street one stop away with the same transfer plus others, this would reduce some congestion in Fulton.
@calvinkendrick851 fair point on both, but with the new strategy on "ReNewVation" it's better since they have a 53 hour hour expedition window to complete the project if I'm correct?
I feel like there needs to be a way to bring stations like Chambers St and Bowery on the J to the 21st Century, as that station desperately needs a renovation that it deserves.
Personally I would like to see the ESI brought back, as the results of these renovations are much more visible to riders. The next stations that should receive a full facelift (plus ADA-accessibility) under this plan are:
The Bronx:
1. 3rd Avenue - 138th Street(IRT Pelham Line)
2. Pelham Parkway(IRT Dyre Avenue Line)
3. Intervale Avenue(IRT White Plains Road Line)
4. Norwood - 205th Street(IND Concourse Line)
5. Fordham Road(IND Concourse Line)
Queens:
1. Parsons Boulevard(IND Queens Boulevard Line)
2. 169th Street(IND Queens Boulevard Line)
3. 75th Avenue(IND Queens Boulevard Line)
Manhattan:
1. 175th Street(IND 8th Avenue Line)**
2. 168th Street(IND 8th Avenue Line)**
3. 125th Street(IND 8th Avenue Line)**
4. West 4th Street - Washington Square(IND 6th Avenue and IND 8th Avenue Lines)**
5. Chambers Street(IRT Broadway - 7th Avenue Line)*
6. Chambers Street(BMT Nassau Street Line)*
7. Bowery(BMT Nassau Street Line)
Brooklyn:
1. Broadway(IND Crosstown Line)
2. Church Avenue(IND Culver Line)**
3. Nostrand Avenue(IND Fulton Street Line)
4. 7th Avenue(IND Culver Line)*
5. 9th Street(BMT 4th Avenue Line)
6. Hoyt-Schermerhorn(IND Crosstown and Fulton Street Lines)
7. Borough Hall(IRT Eastern Parkway Line, Local Platforms)*
8. 15th Street - Prospect Park(IND Culver Line)
9. Prospect Park(BMT Brighton Line)**
10. Fort Hamilton Parkway(IND Culver Line)
*Station is already ADA-Accessible
**Station is already ADA-Accessible but is due for elevator replacements
The system’s stations are like the map in Euro Truck Simulator 2. In ETS2, the older parts of the map looked very old and outdated as the newer map expansions looked more enhanced. Because of this, the developers are working on reworking the older parts of the map to keep their appearances up to date. As for the subway stations, the newer ones look modern and are wheelchair-accessible whereas the older ones look old and run-down and lack accessibility. However, the MTA has renovated certain stations to make them look modern and match up with the newer stations. However, many renovated stations are yet to be made accessible but the MTA has been sued for this, since the law requires it for renovated stations, regardless of the cost, it may happen in the future.
Yes bring it back
3:57-4:08 had me saying “chambers street…chambers street…chambers street…CHAMBERS STREET” on the J/Z lines😭
Finally I was looking forward to this video
They need to fix the Chambers Street Station on the J line...
I think that we need to start to do complete overhauls of a lot of the subway stations soon, because they're only going to get worse over time. We really need to have started decades ago.
Absolutely needed at the same time make them accessible
Chambers St (J) needs ESI asap
Costs of the Station renovations and Covid are probably the two main reasons why this project wasn’t complete. I agree that Bowery and Chambers Street can use this renovations; especially Bowery. There are some 6 line stations that need it too. While some stations are known for their eyesore looks, they should also include to slightly enhance some of these stations that have a big rat problem
The Re-NEW-Vation project is a great way to make stations feel a lot better with minimal money and time. Unfortunately, I can't help but feel that this is the sort of repair work that should be done to every station every few years, not a major one tine upgrade...
Yo mystic, u should start visiting or talking about abandoned stations in nyc subway like the Bowery station
Chambers st heavily needs this
Agreed!
Chambers St on the Jamaica Line needs a renovation that brings the station to the 21st Century same with Bowery. Those Stations are literally falling apart. I also think the stations on the BMT 4th Ave line need renovations too as they are falling apart I’ve seen 45th St and it was literally showing it’s age, it would look like 53rd St, as it has the 21st Century appearance.
Anything that involves complete closure for aesthetic purposes is a no-go for me. I live in a place where transit outside of my one subway line is extremely difficult. I don’t trust them to know what’s helpful and what isn’t.
Esthetics ARE important to a subway station , but I do agree that it's a no go simply for that reason. Esthetics AND station improvements should be the goal.
I like the ESI. Because there is improving the 7 line project. 82nd-Street Jackson Heights and 111th Street which are still renovating platform. I think they are gonna have ESI.
Just finished on Baychester Ave(5 Line) Station.
You bring up a good point about combining the two programs, while the station re-new-vation program does present a more budget friendly and feasible alternative, the ESI stations are truly unrivaled in design and aesthetic. Personally, I prefer the ESI stations as they combine the traditional charm of the NY subway with a fresh modern aesthetic and functionality suitable for the 21st century. I do believe the MTA can renovate stations in the ESI style under the Re-new-vation program if they adopt simple changes such as using the ESI color scheme when repainting a station or replacing old benches with the ESI ones instead of traditional ones. Would definitely like to see the ESI design scheme make a comeback, but I feel the MTA has kinda given up on it.
I agree. ESI gives stations a modernized look & feel, something the NYC Subway system is severely lacking with the sheer age of most of the system. While I do feel like some stations are better off with the smaller Re-New-Vations, I also feel like some of the more deteriorated stations in the system (with missing tiles, leaks, etc) should get an ESI-like renovation. I have noticed something similar of the sort though, as 145/157th Streets on the (1) Line in Manhattan have both recently receieved a Re-New-Vation, and are now getting tile replacements on their walls.
Will they include Norwood 205 St station on the D line?
Let’s give it a try ;)
Renewvations is just cleaning and shining. ESI worked well in some stations like on the 4th Avenue line. On the 6th Avenue line like 57th street they did horrible
This is a genuinely good idea although i hope when they cleaned and scrubbed the stations and put them back to new they retain that look by having the stations being maintained at least once per month
honestly i'm kind of used to stations lookin fugly, that if i was at a station renovated from ESI, i wouldn't know it. i would want attention focused on other things, in particular now that i am personally affected, better late night service. and i would imagine that because i've been late to work because of patchwork being done on stations that seem fine to me on the surface, i honestly wouldn't mind a bit less of that going on.
last week there was a ton of disrupted service late night, but they had the 5 going to brooklyn late night, and it ran express. that's something, for example, i'd like to see more of. they could have run express 5s only, while they spruce up local stops, that's the kind of compromise i'd be willing to see
Absolutely, but we shouldn't be used to fucked up looking station s either. In a city like NY, we should have well run train service AND stations that are pleasing to the eye and nice to be in as subways are in other parts of the world .irje
They should bring back the late night 2 express.
I’m not sure if the MTA will even consider bringing back the enhanced station initiative knowing that Richard Davey is laser focused on nothing else but ren-ew-vations but even then yes I think it would be nice for it to make a return for the time being
If we gave it a try people would complain that their stop is skipped but If I were them I would be ok with them because it’s coming with a better outcome I would just take the bus or a something until it’s opened again
Why do I feel like chambers street could see a decent amount of cleanup just from a good hosing. Some of those photos of works in progress show the guys using sponges
I know RENOVATIONS AND REOPENING
When is the W train least used station video coming out?
They should bring it back
(7) Train
52 Street Station
69 Street Station
90 Street Station
And
103 Street Station.
BUSES ARE RUNNING OK
JOE is My FRIEND OK

Fast Track and ESI should be brought back
I always thought the ESI program was a bit of a waste, closing perfectly functional stations just to make them look nicer. The renewvation program is better imo because it addresses the biggest issues in a much quicker time
But the reNEWvation program doesn't improve station experience. Yes, it cleans it up and does improve the station, but it mostly gives it a cheap paint job. How about fixing some tiles, better lighting, farw control areas? No one wants to go to a station with cheap looking paint jobs and poorly patched up steps? I like what they did at 174th-175th St and 167th St on the Concourse line. Fordham Road should be next.
@@IlDiavolo2515it does improve station experience, just not as much as ESI. ESI just feels like closing it for too long for pretty minimal benefit when there’s nothing functionally wrong with the stations being closed

the funding and smart choices. now that NYS is going broke because of the Migrant situation...
Enhanced Station Initiative violated ADA law and common sense by not including elevators during those extended shutdowns.
I hate this programme. The Astoria stations destroyed the architectural history of that line.
