Rebuilding The Astoria Line

- The Astoria NW line went into service more than 100 years ago, in 1917. It's been in daily use ever since. Age and increasingly extreme weather have taken their toll. So, beginning in October 2017, we began intense and extensive work on the stations, track and supporting infrastructure to ensure another 100 years of service for Astoria. This year, the next big phase of this renewal project begins.

Why not just also build a provision to allow the line to be extended to LaGuardia Airport?
*M O N E Y*
Because that would make sense
NIMBYS
Why did they stop using the astoria express
1) It would cost a fuck-ton of money
2) It would require extended street closures to build the viaduct
3) NIMBY
It would make a lot more sense than Cuomo's AirTrain to Woodside, but hey, I'm not the one making the decisions here.
Love the Astoria line, its definitely one of my favorites in the system. Such great views of the East Side of Manhattan. Also with Astoria because a very popular neighborhood these upgrades are going to serve many people well for years to come!
@OMGitsme And what did they do to you for you to respond to them like that?
Thank you for this great video. This is the transparency and information every transport authority and company should bring to their costumers!
It is nice that Astoria Boulevard is getting elevators because it will provide ADA Accessible Access from the BMT Astoria Line to the M60 SBS Bus, which brings people between Astoria and LaGuardia Airport, in addition to serving parts of Manhattan.
Thank you Gregory for the update on your MTA station in Astoria! : )
I love how low the bar was set for a decent subway station. Fully accessible AND trucks will stop scraping the damn underside of the station. Brilliant. I love New York.
Craig F. Thompson which is building several rapid transit rail lines all at once. They have a new crosstown opening soon
I love that they had some funding to *put this video together and inform people* on CZcams and other platforms
KillPenguins AKA xtzyshuadog This is totally different funding, separate from the operating or capital budget or any budget whatsoever.
not exactly like itd cost much lol
Can probably pay an intern to do this for 100 bucks
@@petrichorbreeze No way an intern can put something this professional together with the quality of graphics that this has. I'd say this video cost at least $5,000. Even if it cost ten times that, it still is nothing as far as the actual cost of real improvements to infrastructure.
Is the 7 line getting work too since the lines stations are in similiar conditions??
__Weirdkid07__ I’m not so sure if this relates to the Astoria Line in any matter, but they already have a new CBTC system, and 74th Street-Broadway got a renovation in the early 2000s.
They can atleast have the thought of renovation from 82nd to Main Street. It's really rusty and old
@@jordymedel5156 That's were I'm thinking as well.
Woodside-61st street station needs major structure repairs. It's extremely rusty, some beams are really bent up or missing and the platform and staircases shake way to much when a train brakes. And yes it's ugly too.
Jordy Medel don’t forget 69th And 52nd
I'm not even from New York (Texas, to be more exact) but I love watching these lol. Good luck on all your projects!
They renovate all these stations but the never renovated Chambers Street!
Rah Mel Chambers street needed more funding. Also, this has nothing to do with the Astoria Line, aside for upgrades. Let’s keep comments related to the video.
TheRailLeaguer your comment is perfect man! Nice and to the point. You are the exact kind of person who should be allowed on the internet and not dumb craps like some of the people in this comment section. Some pope, pale just can’t watch a informational well put together video without complaining, it’s ridiculous.
He has a point.
Yeah, new stations would be nice, but Chambers Street is in dire need of a facelift. You can’t simply dismiss his comment because it “strayed to far from that topic”
Chambers Street is disgusting
Craig F. Thompson But either way, instead of complaining here, you should complain via twitter or the MTA website.
Sadly there’s still no Bronx queens connector
Abrahan Cruz such a fucking pain to get into the Bronx from queens by train

Yeah it sucks, you gotta take the Q44 SBS from Jamaica or Flushing.
I love these vids. Very informative. Thanks!
Great work MTA =)
Cute. Congrats to Astoria on getting updated stations.
Good for you citizens of Astoria, upgrades and renovation are important. 👍

I love the Astoria Line, great views, great people
It's about time the Astoria Line station will be upgraded. This will be a brand new sight for all residents who use the N and W trains daily and will benefit all customers who use the system as well. Hopefully Ditmars will get the same upgrade soon
Keep upgrading the system
NYC has a fascinating subway system
Do all the outdoor lines have heaters already? I'm all for artwork but a painting isn't gonna stop frostbite 😛
Oediv26 some heat lamps wouldn’t hurt for the platform
Yeah, it's called "wear a coat".
Nelson Ricardo haha! That’s works too!
Nelson Ricardo yea but your heavy duty coat can only do so much when there’s an emergency at another station and your train is delayed 20 minutes
@@shortyzangelz and how often does that happen? delays are usually in the middle of a line, not right next to a terminal where the line is usually outside.
Yes.....born and raised...proud of the way its going down!
Ok nice......... Now make a video about the more historic part of the "N" Line.... The Sea Beach part.
Ah yes. Good stuff always nice to see The People's Trai(N) in a video! ⚡⚡⚡
Love it!
Some parts of the city is looking like back in the 70s. I was there 2 months ago and found it quite dirty. The subways are also dirty in most parts.
@Onix Navarro They're fixing the subway mostly for the gentrified neighborhoods,
@Craig F. Thompson Lived there
good job gentleman, thank you for all that you do for your community.
What about escalators? Those elevators become glorified urinals eventually
Yes literally it stinks in there and it is blistering hot in those toilets literally 10 people and more pee in there
Ikr, perfect place to leak one out
The disabled need those elevators, and elevators barely smell, stop with the old jokes.
At least the wait will be worth it with the stations becoming accessible.
I have an essay due tomorrow and I am watching this found in my recommendation
Will the work involving raising the clearance of the station close down the roads leading to and out of the triboro/rfk bridge?
Anna Chan Only Hoyt Avenue South will need to be closed for the renovation work. Access to the RFK bridge will be retained.
I know that the Astoria Blvd station is being remade at some point this year, and that the Ditmars Blvd station will be finished by June of this year.
Some stations on the fulton st and culver lines needs renovation too
They had to prioritize Astoria Boulevard because that's where the M60 bus comes in from 125th Street IRT East Side Line from 103rd Street 1 train that's 3 blocks away from M60sbs Terminal 106th & Broadway.
Mta info can you upload a video on taking the 7 train from queensboro plaza to 34th street husdon yards and can you explore the station. 😃 By stations with water checker
I think the M60 SBS stop for Astoria Boulevard and 31st Street should stay as it is being shared with the Q19 for LaGuardia Airport bound buses. It currently got relocated to that spot, but I think it should stay there even after the Astoria Boulevard Station reopens.
Hopefully, they will put the elevator on Ditmars blvd also!
Idk why I watch this channel, I live in London
This may be an unusual request, but I came across your youtube channel. Even though your focus here is on Astoria today, I thought you may know something about what I am looking for. I am writing an historical novel with my protagonist arriving in Astoria, Queens around 1898. My current research is on transportation systems, particularly railroads in Long Island/Astoria area. Could you provide input on the difference between the history of NY&LI RR and LIRR during that time period? I was told the NY&LI RR was a different company where main depot was located between Broadway and Steinway Street, Astoria. The LIRR main depot line was located further south between Hunterpoint and Skillman Avenue.
Were the tracks on the East River Astoria dockside near Fulton Street those from NY&LI RR or LIRR? In researching, can’t seem to find much of anything about NY&LI RR. All the history seems to revolve around LIRR. Any input you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I will be glad to give attribution in acknowledgements. Look forward to hearing from you.
Gotta say, as someone who has been riding the Astoria line for as long as I can remember, I like the new improvements that are being done to the line. I’m not an Astoria resident myself but I can imagine that having your station/line closed is not fun at all. Keep up the good work. Also, can you study the feasibility on installing Elevators at 39th-Dutch Kills, 36th, 30th, and Broadway? If anything, I’d suggest doing something about terminal operations at Ditmars Boulevard, it keeps holding up trains at Astoria Boulevard and it’s kinda annoying.
[T.A.G.] LaGuardia Link N Train The Fast Forward Plan will make 50 new stations accessible so that all riders are no more than two stops away from an accessible station.
TheRailLeaguer I know that, I just want to know which Astoria stations are getting it after Astoria Boulevard
Elevator at ditmars.blvf
Smart development
So is broadway station open now?
Jay Brown Yea
Me want the back aka the Astoria express
Pixelshine This will cause overcrowding on the N train. An ideal solution is to reroute the N to 96th Street and increase W train service to Astoria to replace N service.
Now do 52st-main Street 7 line renovation... the stations are held together by rusted bolts. It’s a miracle that it’s still functioning or is it not?
OK, so first, the MTA rebuilt the (F) and (G) train lines’ Culver viaduct and now this. I bet the next train line to have their viaduct rebuilt is the (J) and (Z) train lines, but who knows?
At least your doing something about the dyre av line. I don't think you've changed it that much since the old Westchester Boston and NYC railway or something like that. I would like to see renovations to all stations except gun hill road or Morris park. Those buildings date back to the 1900's if not 1800's and you can see it was an old railway by looking at the front. They are truly precious and I would hate for all of them to be taken down. Baychester ave on the other hand was probs just carved out from the wall and so is dyre av. Dyre av is really small like bruh yet still look at east 180 st with that castle for a station
The NYWB opened in May of 1912, and construction of its buildings was around 1909-1911. Grading began in 1906. I believe the 180th Street building is an official landmark, which was recently fixed up. So don't worry- it's not in any danger. The Dyre Avenue station was rebuilt in about 1962- the original was heavily damaged in a wind storm.
@@iandale3674 Morris Park's old NYW&B station is on the NRHP too. What I want to know is if the old "To Station/From Station" sign at Pelham Parkway is still going to be around, and if not, where is it now?
I'm sorry to say that I don't have any information about this...@@DTD110865
Really?! Still no LaGuardia Airport extension. People would greatly benefit from it. This is a huge missed opportunity to not just rebuild the Astoria Line but to extend to LaGuardia Airport. And maybe a new train yard deinterline it and increase capacity over there
When will y'all extend to LaGuardia airport
1:51. That is the probs that come with overground stations.
can you guys fix the underground, we really needed a Air Condition Down here from the heat of summer.
Ricky Chang What does this have to do with the Astoria Line?
@@TheRailLeaguer is a part of mta
Does this have anything to do with Amazon?
R S Not really. These upgrades were planned well before the Amazon announcement.
No, this video wasn't related.
It is worth it at the end of the day.
I think that Kingston Avenue on the A and C needs it.
R160B W Train_RBLX Kingston-Throop is one of the station planned for ESI work. However, funding for that project ran out, so the work there was pushed back to the next capital plan, which is 2020-2024.
My old borough!
Wow
Does the (W) still operate?
Noah Racuya Where the hell have you been for the last 2 years?
Glad they’re getting an upgrade, but when will the MTA fix the 7 train?? The Main Street Flushing station is absolutely deplorable and so are many other stations along the line smh
Mocha18 They just got a new CBTC system, so nothing to worry.
Also, what does this have to do with the Astoria Line?
TheRailLeaguer I don’t see any videos on here about the problems plaguing the 7 train. What good is a new system if there are still delays and overcrowding?? And it seems the MTA is very selective about who gets all the upgrades, the stations in Corona are rotting, all you see on Main Street are bums, yet we’re somehow not a priority. If you don’t live around here or take the 7 frequently then you don’t know what we have to deal with.
Mocha18 The CBTC system just needs to be calibrated to ensure that it will work in April.
Mocha18 as someone who is a train operator on the 7, I can tell you CBTC is much better than before and until it’s 100% there will be some issues from time to time. Main Street Station as well as other stations I agree need major overhauls but that sadly takes mucho dinero.
Omar Velez I hope so because the 7 has gotten so bad that I’ve opted to take the LIRR instead, much more expensive but 10 times faster and more efficient . Thanks for the update!
Do a renovation On the 6 line the stations look bad
Renovations are coming to 3Av 138 St/E149/Brook Av/Hunts Point/ and Westchester Sq around 2020 they really need to add cbtc because afternoons have long waitimes although Morning Rush hour has decent service
XP JR 22 88 They will get CBTC as part of the Fast Forward Plan. Right now, the 6 will get an extra R62A train during the morning rush and an extra R62A train during the afternoon rush to relieve overcrowding.
TheSpongebobFlow Read my comment above.
ah yes 9 months to add artwork and face lift the station amazing its almost as like building the GWB or empire state building was one in under a year and was a massive project lol
We get it. YOU LIVE IN ASTORIA

Can we please, please, please get an extension to LaGuardia Airport or connection from Astoria to Harlem or the Bronx.
At least the MTA is actually benefiting its riders
I wish that we would get a change to the Staten Island Railway's purpose from going on one side of the island to the other, to going to at least ONE other borough, preferably Manhatten for me. Come on MTA, DO IT
Nicolas Druda This has nothing to do with the Astoria Line.
Give up and move
hello MTA, if you are reading this, please put back the old ladys voice annoucing the stops. EXT like the voice on the 6 train, plz pu that on the new trains, if not thanks for listening to me, have a good day!!
Mekai Ramirez What does the 6 train announcements have to do with the Astoria Line?
Astoria was the best kept secret till 2000’s. I just wish they would have added elevator not just to the Astoria blvd it should have been at 30th seeing the hospital is only blocks a way ave and Ditmars Boulevard being the first stop .
E train is one of the best train out there
The L train and J train at Broadway junction are competitive all trains at Broadway junction are better all the E train needs is that the C train goes express or maybe the E train goes express
But the 7 is loads better
No signaling upgrade?
Wasserfeld Not yet.
Astoria Blvd is now open!!
Where is the modern Astoria blvd station, I’m just seeing red shingles..!
tomasCY They will renovate the Astoria Blvd station to make it modern, complete with new sorely-needed elevators.
TheRailLeaguer From their rendering it seems that the only doing maintenance plus elevators, not really aesthetic upgrade. On the video they also imply that Ditmars is only getting structural upgrade (green stairs w red roofs) not modernization...
tomasCY Maybe They will throw some artwork in the station, but who knows.
TheRailLeaguer We will both know in December:-)
tomasCY You’re right, but as long as the station is structurally fixed and there are elevators it’s all that matters to me, but the artwork does add a nice touch.
Crappy experience when going down on freaking long stairs to catch M60 at Astoria Ave with a suitcase...so glad that there’s something good that is going to happen. Also hope there will be escalators and elevators at Jackson Heights Station!
There are already elevators at the Jackson Heights station.
I miss it when the Q train went to astoria :( Memories........
R62A 7 Train It’s still there under the form of the W.
The Q only started going to Astoria when they killed the W. Honestly, there are too many train linea sharing the same tracks at the Midtown portion of the NQRW. It leads to a lot of congestion and when one of those trains has an issue it has a cascading impact on a lot of neighborhoods.
There should have been an elevator put at Broadway also it's a very busy shopping area. Queensboro Plaza needs one badly also that's the busiest in Long Island City.
Busy areas require escalators. Elevators are for accessibility. Guess which one has higher capacity per minute.
@Craig F. Thompson OP talks about capacity and not about accessibility as a reason for elevator. I never said there shouldn't be elevators.
Did you see new features in 1:40-1:49?
Ariel Gonzalez what are you asking?
@@Abstractt Why u wanna asking me a question? I'm commenting about new stations at the end of this year.
Can't wait until 200 years after my death for the stations on the C/A line to be renovated and upgraded.
Just move
For what
And after all that closure time between 2019 and 2020, they still have to do track maintenance almost every other weekend.
it's always flooded when it rains, how does an an above ground station flood?
Astoria lines got a botched BBL, it looks good from the outside, but it's still ole MTA flop on the inside.
Thats good news
Why did they wait 102 years to upgrade the stations...?
Ny has incompetent leaders
We need elevators in Broadway station...and yes it would be difficult but possible with new stairwells that could connect with an elevator.
THEGREYGH0ST How would wheelchairs use it if there are stairs to the elevator?
@@TheRailLeaguer Broadway station already has new stairs on the uptown side only that ONLY serves as a exit (which is stupid if you ask me) that goes from the street level to uptown platform. 3 doors (1 has a automatic door button btw) lead into a small platform leading to those stairs on the right. All the MTA has to do is build a elevator from the street level to the stairs platform on the left side. Get rid if those stupid 3 doors and put a metrocard accessible door with with 2 revolving turnstiles.
They should extend the mta nyc Bus to River head,NY
Why i am seeing I live in Toronto nothing to do with it
I watch videos about the streetcars in Toronto sometimes
How about a W Lcl-Exp?
Blake McNamara Given how horribly infrequent the N, R, and W all operate, this will cause overcrowding on all three lines.
What should be done is to reroute the N from Astoria-Dirmars to 96th Street and increase W service to Astoria. All N/W passengers from Astoria are getting off at 34th Street, so there is no need for an express N service from Astoria when W service at 12 trains per hour can suffice.
Now can you actually put NTTs on the N and W
They used to run on the N and W
They should replace a lot of nyc subway stations
I don’t get why they there isn’t an extension to LGA
There’s connection with a bus
Your answer is a simple 5-letter word: NIMBY
I think lga is going to get an airtrain that’ll connect to the subway, not sure which stop tho
Craig F. Thompson M60 isn’t slow anymore
Jake M to flushing useless
seems that they care less for the stations at the flushing line but at least its having structural repairs form 102 to 72 st
joan morales The structural repairs are more important because of recent incidents of debris raining onto the street. These repairs on the Flushing and Astoria Lines are very important.
*Please fix the whole bronx, specially the 6 line.*
Gold Clouds What does the Bronx have to do with the Astoria Line, other than the renovations aspect?
Onix Navarro Don’t voice concerns on CZcams, where they rarely check them for comments. Instead, use the MTA website or Twitter, which they do check.
They are… like they’re doing more than one thing. More stations have and continue to become more accessible, with my local station (Gun Hill Road on Dyre Avenue) actually getting a renovation and accessibility
The gentrification is strong with this one... This station will get dirty and smell like piss in less than six months, you can definitely quote me on that.
Lorenzo Koenig
I think 6 months is too long, maybe 2 months
30th and 39th have been open for more than 6 months...
I hope so; then the hipsters will move out. :)
Stop with the old jokes. I feel like EVERY time you people are getting an improvement to your neighborhood, you cry gentrification.
The entire NYC system needs to be rebuilt. Let's make the hard choices and get it done sooner than spreading it out.
Where is the train automatic doorWhere is the train automatic door
All the stations should’ve been made accessible, no matter the cost, according to the ADA law. The stations aren’t newly built from scratch, but renovating them still requires accessibility upgrades. The disabled community is definitely still complaining to this day.
How about the j/z line
Already done
What would it cost to replace the entire system? With climate change I see a future NYC with mostly, if not all, elevated train lines, completely new ones with new routes. The subway will be too costly to maintain.
The only problem is that I live in a tiny town in Italy and have nothing to do with New York, why am I watching this?
No elevator at ditmars blvd
Upgraded to classic R46 and R68, why'll the junk R160 are a downgrade to the line. HA! Nice rebuild, I wish the MTA would improve their substandard Next Gen subway cars.
