Honestly these complaints the last days piss me off so much. Completely kills the joy of cycling as a sport for me if its not a competetion but just random teams crying for stage wins. How are people begging to have gifted wins is beyond me. As Patrick says its pathet ic.

Not at all convinced Pog chose not to try and win the stage just to placate whingers - more likely he was happy to take an extra day off and then raised it afterwards just to limit the moans and/or spark this debate 🤷‍♂️ He'll be having a good giggle now if so, and I'm sure he'll keep going for wins when he wants to.

Ok, so I get the DS's asking Pog to slow down, not ride as aggressively etc. There's the Giro/TDF double to consider. However, as a fan I love seeing him just going for every stage. I will rein in my enthusiasm, though, because I want him competitive at the Tour. I don't get the greedy comments. So they want gifting? If he gifts, he's wrong, if he wins, he's greedy. I know there's always going to be haters. I hope he can brush off the negative and just be the kid who loves to race his bike. Thanks, guys

Serious question, but who in the peloton has been complaining? I thought most of the chatter was just from fans/analysts/podcasters/etc Have riders been throwing subtle shade at Pog and I missed it?

At no point did he say that any rider or team complained and I would find that hard to believe. However the press and fans have been very vocal and the diplomatic decision was his own team I believe. It’s up to him what he does but don’t sulk about it

  • @alanthomas3236

I see things differently. Firstly, there is a long history of GC teams letting stage wins go to non-GC teams in order to share the spoils (eg, the reason Armstrong/Hinault were in the news for saying “pas de cadeux” in 2004 was precisely because it was unusual & therefore noteworthy). And secondly, the reality is that pro road cycling is advertising first, entertainment second, pure sport third (vs. say track cycling where i think that order is reversed). If team X is coming at the Giro from a “best rider always wins” (sport) perspective while team Y is more from a “we all need exposure” perspective (advertising) I think it is natural that some conflict might occur if UAE try to take every stage. I certainly don’t see it as whining, i just see it as having different perspectives and needs.

everyone in the comments protecting the all beloved Pogi like a bunch of sheeps. I am sure that mountain stage 8 he won will drastically change his palmares. Poor guy rarely wins anything. VPP should have 2 giro stages by now. Also single-handedly preventing that narvaez win. Boys and girls Lance Armstrong gifted an epic mont ventoux stage to the pirate, sharing is caring. I am starting to really dislike him despite being Slovenian. He definetly aint winnig the tour like that, another bonk on one of the big hard mountain stages in the tour incoming.

It’s an absolute joke saying Pog is greedy. The people that tell him not to ride for the win are greedy, because they know they can’t win if he rides like he wants too. This is professional sports at one of the biggest events in the sport and the best athlete is told to not race?!? Absolute farce

    • @jaydicenso

The ONLY person who deserves a win is the rider who can get across the line first. I can't speak for everyone but I'd rather watch 3 weeks of the same guy winning than see "pity victories" handed out to world tour teams. If they absolutely HAD to "let someone else win", I'd love to see UAE go all in for a continental rider. Full sky-train treatment, Pog literally pushing a Bardiani rider up a climb like a creepy old guy on a group ride while the sprint teams are crying about how they "deserved the win today" in the grupetto.

I've been pretty annoyed by the whole group that have been whining about his wins from the very beginning of the whining. It is quite ridiculous from both inside the peloton as well as outside the peloton. And because democracy/bullying won the day and he wasn't able to take more time yesterday on stage 10, if he loses next week because of a bad day or his team somehow doesn't make it through next week because of sickness or crashes, they will rue the day they made that decision. They should have been racking up as much time as they could knowing the following two days were sprint stages. And on another note, if they make these concessions now, and lose the Giro as well as the Tour it will be a complete disaster. The best place to be is at the front period.

How about racing conservative is the smart thing to do? Maybe he didnt feelt great on stage 10 so he didnt have the legs to take an big gap anyway? Maybe hes even a little sick? Maybe he wants to save some energy from his Team which isnt completely stacked to begin with? He already has 3 minutes. So there is already an significant margin. If you want to make history you have to adjust your strategy. It doesnt matter if the wins the Giro by 5 or 10 minutes, but it does how tired/fresh he comes out of the Giro.
