Team Benji
I love that the Colombia Tour organizers listened to the podcast and decided: "We need to put an end to the discussion about who is more popular between Uran and Quintana" and created a popularity jersey just for LRCP!
Congrats benji on the lotto deal, so cool that you boys have parlayed the pod into such great opportunities
I don't understand why this channel doesn't have 6 million subscribers...
honestly vingegaard cycling around doing crits in the desert instead of the TDF might be the only way to end jumbo dominance
Love the weekly pod! :) Hoping this'll be a great success!
Edit: The "sportswashing" thing with Red Bull might be, that Dietrich Mateschitz, who owned the company, until he passed away recently, was the main contributor to the Austrian far right party and other far right causes in Europe. Also they got pretty divisive with their involvement in German football (RB Leipzig).
Thanks for the info!
Now comments about Checo make more sense
worth noting that anyone who's not extreme links is considered far rechts, these fuktup days
Congratulations Benji! Very well deserved and good choice. So happy to see the growth of both your careers in cycling.
Thumbs UP for these two guys being recognised for their knowledge of the sport!
Loving the new pod format. Getting me excited for all these random small races!
The Lara Windies reference made my day, great memories there.
Thanks guys, loving the news pod
Love these! So much to ponder after. Congrats, Benji! I think you both have much to contribute to the teams with whom you work. It should provide some interesting discussions for us!!
My 2 cents about Red Bull. The RB critic isn't so much about "sportwashing" in my opinion. It's mostly about two factors: One being their involvent in and sponsorship of (Austrian) far right populism i.e. through their TV channel "Servus TV" and also their founder Mateschitzes (private) patronage of such political tendencies. The other being their football/soccer activities, where the idea of a quote unquote "sponsor" taking over a whole team/club, changing the name, the kit etc. isn't considered as "normal" and state of the art as it is in cycling... which did not stop them from doing it anyways, which led to A LOT of (deserved) hate towards RB especially in the german speaking countries. (We love our football and will react very allercic if someone tries to destroy what we consider the real football ™). I guess both of these reasons are not very well known if someone isn't from the "german speaking world", but both reasons are VERY present in german (speaking) political and especially sports culture. I think, that explains most of the "hate" RB is getting for now entering cycling. Hope I could clarify it a bit. :)
Now entering cycling? They've been in cycling for 10-15 years........Turned the MTB World Cup into a great product....and brought new events like Hardline, Rampage, Urban DH......
@@WerdnaLiten I obviously mean entering road cycling as a major team sponsor (but that should have been clear from the context)
7:50 Seppie the smugler
Patrick, I love that you mentioned Wyoming/even know that state exists! There's more cows than people in Wyoming.
At the end of the weekly pod, it would be cool if you guys read a couple CZcams comments out loud; whether that be questions or anything you find interesting in the comments.
Chatgpt definition for monuments : In cycling, a race is considered a monument if it's one of the five oldest and most prestigious one-day races in the sport. These races are Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia.
Follow-up question: when was that established, here's the output: The concept of cycling monuments dates back to the early 20th century when these five races gained prominence in the cycling world due to their history, difficulty, and prestige. While there isn't a specific founding date for the concept, these races gradually earned their status over time through tradition, competition, and historical significance.
Colombian nationals and the Tour of Colombia is awesome. I’m so glad that tour is back. The Colombian fans are next level and I Am Here For It! 🇨🇴
Great signing by Lotto.. Well Done!
Looooving the new show.
The Saudi Arabia League could be modelled on the Indian Premier League (cricket). Ran over a select few months, with the best of the best invited to attend. Could be interesting if varied parcours is found
If a teamowner spinsor another teams riders, this would be a serious conflict of interest :x
Therefore the UCI bans it. It is pretty relevant right now, not only because of Red Bull, but also because the betting company that owns Français des Jeux bought the Swedish betting company that owns Unibet, the sponsor of pro-conti TdT-Unibet. INRNG reported on this; haven't heard from it since.
yeah they will gotta have to stop wearing this helmet or change teams
Love this. Makes Mondays so much easier to bear^^
Tier 1 - MSR, Flanders, Roubaix,Liege, Lombardy, Worlds, Olympics
Tier 2 -Strade, Fleche, Gent, Amstel ( with maybr Strade first among equals in this group)
I like your thinking but in Tier 1, the monuments stay fairly consistent… but the worlds/ Olympics parkour can vary between a sprinters track, punchers hill circuit or proper climbs. Albeit these days organisers do love a hill circuit, of varying surface quality.
Can wait to see you two do the Flandrien challenge - I’m honestly hoping for snow or at least light drizzle
Thanks for the weekly pod
Hey, we have hard core road cyclists in Wyoming: more elevation than Andorra and more wind than Flanders, plus swerving around bulls and moose.
A race around the desert for a wad of money....or a Grand Tour. Or a 1 week tour. Or the classics? Will there be a seriously greater interest outside of the yearly calender? Cycling is made interesting by the environment of the race not only the big money. (tho some may be drawn by the money) I think us older folk will be more drawn to "Tradition". KSA would need to create something unique and interesting to draw the fans.
They can't buy history.
I think that cycling is an Sport where the races are bigger than the athletes for the most part.
People don't watch the Tour or Monuments because they can see certain riders, because they want to see the Tour / Monuments with great riders obviously increasing the interest.
Love the new weekly update pod! I'd been hoping you guys would do this.
Great show guys
i would disagree on the point that ex-winners of a monument when that race wasnt a monument are actually monument winners, it doesnt work backwards and the race was less prestigious befor the monument change
For the Flandrian challenge have a good think about your tire choice. You're trying to finish and not destroy yourselves so do not run a tire lower than 32mm. I'd even consider up to a 38mm slick if your bike can handle it. It will make for a much safer and comfortable experience.
Patrick looking lean azzzzz. Let's go Lanterne.
If it’s a week in which you don’t cover a race (not sure if this will happen during the season) could you do 2 podcasts with one being special topics or interviews, etc…? ❤🙏
Probably asking too much. But digging the new show and want more!
Eolo is an Italian internet provider by satellite. Now you know!
Strada is the ONE monument that I will NOT miss.
Strade should be an official monument. It has reached that level of prestige in my opinion. It is a cut above other one-day races.
Rugby is pretty popular in Belgium Benji. There'ys 56 clubs with over 12k affiliates. Not sure if that's enough for top 10 though.
Antoine Dupont is said to be on 600k a year, but I'm sure he makes a lot more that through endorsements
It is no match for cycling in continental Europe. By far. 56 clubs? Cute.
I had a lot of trouble finding out how many club cycling licenses Belgium has, but I found a number for the clubs. If you count only those participating in official competitions, there's about the same number as rugby clubs. So even if they have on average 2-3 times the number of members (which might be a stretch), it's still not massively more than rugby players.
I'm all for change in the pro cycling industry/culture. Can't wait to see a new company come in and shake up the traditions. As long as it has the riders health and safety at the forefront
Loving the weekly shows - was wondering if you'd care to comment in a future show on the potential takeover of Unibet by FDJ and how that might affect TDT-Unibet as highlighted by inrng recently. Also how the ban on betting companies advertising in certain territories might have an impact. I know it's all speculation at this point but everyone loves a bit of speculation! :)
Loved the cricket reference
Hi guys! After the Red Bull purchase of the Bora Team, do you think they will get better in the more specific part of the sport such as Time Trial? For example, Red bull owns a Wind Tunnel for the F1 team, could this be benefitial for the cycling team having these kind of technology for them to use?
last year i spent 9 hours in the rain for the flanders challenge so get ready for it, also most likely youll have to walk the koppenberg lol
love the podcast, but disagree with you both regarding not having an impact on Pidcock and Van Aert sponsorship. I can't see Visma and Inneos happy with their star riders advertising a main competitor on their helmets.
These are the best
1:19:40 Cobble descents in the rain really scream for the extreme weather protocol
Agreed.
Yates clutching the sprint with the alula home court 50 watts bonus of course
Good morning Patrick and Benji- can’t wait for spring classics- still need to figure out my GCN /VPN replacement here in America..😢
tiz cycling 🏴☠️
Did I hear correctly, 8watts per kilogram for 15min for Tao Geoghegan Hart somewhere? Hmmm🤔🤔
didn't a single golfer get offered $200M? (John Raam). Seems $250M for all cycling teams looks a little light.
Bora = whole team wearing Red Bull Helmets would probably be the best branding move in the short term + logo on Bus, Truck(s), Cars, etc
my guess is they unveil the new kits at the tour
Won't happen......only RB athletes wear them. Look at Leipzig, Salzburg, etc hardly any of them are RB athletes.....
If they are paying 51% of Your salary / team expenses, don't they automatically become RB athletes?
Thoughts on the PIF $250m to create a 4th 3 week stage race. Pay the teams so all best riders are there and pump up the prize money. Rather than trying to start a whole anther tour ?
If you were to create 5 "mini-monuments" akin to the 7 big one weeks compared to the grand tours. What 5 races would you pick?
Strade, Fleche, Amstel, Gent-Wevelgem and Classica San Sebastian? Missing out on some representation in autumn. But I genuinely do not care for any autumn races like Quebec.
@@TibovlAgree. These races do people and Teams actually care about while the Canadian ones are and after thought for most of the Fans and riders.
Fun Fact - Gerrymander (i.e. election boundary rig) named after the guy who first did it and was once pronounced with a hard G (as in Gherkin) - so Benji was partially correct.
Elbridge Gerry (former Governor of Massachusetts).. drew the lines in his favor that looked like a salamander.. hence Gerry+mander..
CZcams blessed me a REDBULL ad as an entrance fee. Coincidence, "I think not."
Congratulations on the deal Benji. Comparing pay and value between road cycling and most other sports is Apples and oranges. No one is paying for tickets for one. Don't all leagues of sports have a team on the "brink"? It would seem inevitable that one team would have to have the smallest salary in the league. Thus they seem on the brink compared to the other teams.
Van Eetvelt is on altitude preparing for UAE, not doing Oman.
PGA has 4 "majors", w/ the TPC as an unofficial 5th. Cycling has had numerous races that deserved 6th monument status over the years. Strade is just the latest. We are a traditions based sport, and that is ok

People in Wyoming have seen cycling Patrick... TDF is very big in the US. Rugby? Not so much.
Benji is right. Cycling vs. rugby depends on the country. In the US, people have heard of the TDF. There have been Americans competitive/winning it. We don't have a national rugby team or a rugby league (AFAIK).
Yet US companies have invested hundreds of millions into the the NZ All Blacks rugby brand.
Of course there's rugby in America: you have the MRL (Major Rugby League) for rugby union and you even have the rugby league version with the USARL
Do you have to pay for that join cycling app?

QQ - is Eurosport the best/only option available in Spain to replace GCN+ ?? With English commentary.
I think there are commentary options on eurosport... but not sure. In Spanish, Italian, French and German it seems likely.
@@tacituskilgore8379 I read somewhere that the English commentary team has been signed on for 2024, so hopefully they're giving English as an option.
@@JordanHammond7, sorry mate, misread your comment. There is always an English option on eurosport. Gcn closing down honestly won't make any real difference for European viewers. Outside of Europe is more complicated.
Unless and Until ASO is FORCED to share revenue with the teams/riders for all their races cycling will always be on the brink.
Oh if youre branching out to rugby, the 250mil would be easy for you two😂
P.S: i totally see lanterne's point with strade, but i also kind of understand benji. I guess, we will have to see how the race shakes out, to see who is right
Tonelli loosing GC in Valencia by just 20 seconds, without that wrong turn in stage 1 he would've had a real good chance.
They rolled over the line celebrating after taking the foot off the gas for 100m+. Tonelli could've won with the wrong turn (albeit due to the tragic circumstances around the shortened stage).
You forgot Benji's race the Tour of Antalya.
The only way I can see a Saudi-backed breakaway league becoming a success is like when in cyclocross X²O bathrooms steps in as a co-sponsor and the winner gets a giant rubber ducky.
'Monuments' is something English-language cycling media started blabbering about 10 years ago, before that I never heard about it.
Oh, and Groenewegen has said he won't do Dauphiné anymore. His improved climbing got in the way of his explosiveness. Steven de Jongh has said the same about Ackermann in De Rode Lantaarn: he trained too much on getting over hills at UAE; at Lidl-Trek they want him to focus completely on flat sprints.
46 sec in
Strade shouldn't be a Monument, and I don't think they're trying to be regarded as such, as much as just trying to have the race being talked about as being more and more on par with the most exciting and difficult ones.
Monuments are those classics that have constantly been on top of the calendar since their inception. Strade now is what Milano-Torino was a long time ago for example, when it was a prestigious win for a certain period of time. If in 60 years it will still be as such, maybe then we can make the argument
# bandaidthenips
I love Strade but I don't think it should be a monument. UNLESS Strade is added to "Monument tier" with 2 other races in non-Monument countries - making a nice round 8 monuments in the year. Hopefully with more weight on the latter half of the season. Add in Quebec or Montreal and bring back Züri-Metzgete
I dont think it would actual devalue the term monument if Strade and especially Quebec or Montreal would be added.
Strade atleast has something unique to it while the Canadian races are lesser versions of Classica San Sebastian or Amstel (which both are clearly below the monuments).
I do think...
Hello there!!

This whole breakaway league is bollocks. The existing races are bigger than the teams and riders. No one cares about crit races, TDU, desert races etc, only the hard-core tiny minority of fans of an already niche sport are interested. And only because of the position on the calender of those races... when there's no meaningful racing in Europe! Teams asking for revenue is going nowhere because ultimately most races don't actually generate any.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a sport that is more dangerous and train harder than professional cyclists
EOLO deals in WIFI via satellite dishes, my parents have an eolo dish on the roof
Sportwashing Saudi's at it again. Sport is worse with their malign influence.
You 'cusing Sepp of smuggling eh? What's he got stashed then?
Probably well soon find out that wout is getting bullied at Jumbo-lab and would like to move to bora
250 mil will buy cycling lock stock and barrel.
I think Pedersen lost last year by 1 second
that was skjelmose
This is not about an alternate league and finance of that. Enough is enough when are people gonna wake up to this sports washing by countries with horrendous human rights and no free press. Its bad enough they are buying all the teams, the league as well will turn me away from the sport completely.
Re the superleague, the fans said no and that stopped it happening. We got to somehow stop this.
The power of money and corruption my friend. But as Benji and Patrick said, this new grift won't probably be seen well by the existing strong players (teams aside).
Disagree about Strade for one simple reason…. Adding now will eliminate riders in the past who we compare performances with.. Merckx with Cavendish. It’s important to consider the historical importance
In US, baseball’s home run record and chase by Aaron vs Ruth was incredible, (I don’t respect steroid athletes as legitimate.
BTW, I just looked at costs to watch cycling in the US!!! It’s very high. To get most of the same races, I have to pay Flo Sports for spring classics, Max for either ASO or RSO races (can’t remember which, & Peacock for the rest. AND they are ALL cracking down on VPN. I really don’t want to hear homer commentary from Roll & Ligett. Ugh!
Rider contract and ethical dilemmas aside, I would love to have a new super league because we might get a lot more WT-level racing here in the US and build up American participation in the sport.
Eeek this is a bad take.
I'm sorry but those M-E projects are getting dumber and dumber. I'm not necessarily in favor of tradition, but trying to develop alternative projects only based on money is not great.
why are we so normal about this. so saudis just come and demolish 150 years of tradition. ok
Oh crap, red bull big in cycling. The smell of the pink p.iss they are selling is awful, not to mention their unscrupulous marketing . I mean, I can ignore a helmet or two but a whole team? Bwah.
Why pink? RB is yellowish
LOL @ the claim rugby world cup being a bigger event than the Tour de France or pro cycling in general. Rugby is only big in overseas Commonwealth. The vast majority of countries and people don't even know rugby exists.
It is big in France and some other countries in Europe as well. In France (talking about my personal experience), it is quite a big deal when there is a game - not as big as football though.
@@adshdhhhd7783 Ok, it might have been an exaggeration on my part. But in France, the TdF definitely is bigger than rubgy. Or in Germany, where I live. People here couldn't care less about rugby. Or cricket.
@@chrisko6439 Cricket might be bigger than cycling as a spectator sport based on Indian viewing alone...

Hahaha, what a shocker to see Patrick arguing pidcock‘s involvement with Red Bull is deeper than van Aert‘s. Recently, we can rely on the pod interpreting everything in a way that benefits visma‘s interests. It’s a shame - I can’t trust the analysis any more.

love the pod, but come on - the idea that you are being employed by a team that you cover is a clear conflict of interest, theres no way around it. claiming that you will remain objective only makes it worse and is insulting to your viewers. from a cynical perspective, how do we know these team owners aren't just looking for a cheap way to launder good press? at the very least, just acknowledge the agreement and let your audience decide for themselves. this idea that your coverage wont change in any way is just absurd
"at the very least, just acknowledge the agreement and let your audience decide for yourself." Isn't that exactly what they are doing by disclosing it?
