This is not a new thing in this sport, it is as old as at least the time of Eddy Merckx. The reason this happens is because those guys race again against each other next day, next week, next month, next year. All the usual human emotions apply: Greed, fear, envy, distrust, betrayal etc. So things get negotiated all the time. Bonds are created, bonds are betrayed, people complain about other people being jerks etc. It is just like real life. I can imagine that this could be new and challenging for Tadej. Being the favourite wonder boy for years and now all of a sudden he gets criticised. I am a big advocate for using mental coaches in this sport, especially for the young guys.

@@edwin.jansen I believe it is wise to avoid creating too much anger or envy in the peloton.
Riders are incredibly vulnerable to a bad move from a competitor and mutual respect helps in maintaining riding etiquette and thus preventing crashes.

  • @davidjames3080

I agree it gets a bit boring when the GC is settled after stage 2. But that's not Pog's fault and to be fair, most of the stages have been pretty decent to watch even knowing the GC is sewn up. If I was him and I was the strongest rider in the race by miles, I would be trying to win every stage I could. There's no guarantee that he will be the strongest next year, or even if he'll ever ride the Giro again - it only takes one bad accident, he could suffer similar to Vingegaard next season, who knows. Make hay while the sun shines I say.

I remember a video you did a while back about "unwritten rules" of cycling and discussing hoe many contradictory situations have occurred and times when people have been celebrated for breaking the "rules". It's a holdover from a time when these sports were more amateur and had less of a ruthless obsession with winning. Ultimately it probably pays to have a few friends in the peloton.

I might feel it was ruining watching the race if UAE were sky-training it and making every stage the same but pogacar is such a fun rider to watch- you can never guess what he'll do (and I think he sometimes doesn't know until he's on the road and feel the opportunity in his legs!) It's gutting that people have been pressuring him to be a less aggressive rider! please! He's so much more fun to watch than the more 'sensible' riders 😭
Also, weren't people having a go at UAE for being too weak saying they wouldn't be able to support pog? Like you can't have it both ways- if they were sincere before saying pog won't have enough support in the big mountains then they should be saying pog needs every second

Pogi is the strongest/best rider in this race. The goal is to win the GC. Not chasing stage wins. Puts too much stress on his teammates. He is lucky that he can go off-book and still win many one day races and accumulate stage wins, but this type of riding (last two TdF) will not produce TdF GC winning results where the competition is better. His teammates are not at the same level. Stick to the plan.

  • @alanthomas3236

I see things differently. Firstly, there is a long history of GC teams letting stage wins go to non-GC teams in order to share the spoils (eg, the reason Armstrong/Hinault were in the news for saying “pas de cadeux” in 2004 was precisely because it was unusual & therefore noteworthy). And secondly, the reality is that pro road cycling is advertising first, entertainment second, pure sport third (vs. say track cycling where i think that order is reversed). If team X is coming at the Giro from a “best rider always wins” (sport) perspective while team Y is more from a “we all need exposure” perspective (advertising) I think it is natural that some conflict might occur if UAE try to take every stage. I certainly don’t see it as whining, i just see it as having different perspectives and needs.
