      I'll just remember that 1:04:23 for 22-23 mm internal rim width, no less than 28 mm...
      I like 28 mm, and on my 19c rims my current 28 mm tyres are really 30 mm wide, so I was afraid that the rim was too wide, but if that's OK for hookless, I should be safe with clinched!

    Great interview with Alex and excellent content as always. There will be the inevitable lawsuit after a major injury or death resulting from the road bike hookless tire blowoff. I’m shocked by the incomprehensible stupidity of using a hookless system at road bike tire pressures. Alex did not mention the additional issue of tire pressure gauge inaccuracy. A gauge reading 68 psi could actually be over 73 psi.

    As I know that @lanternerouge is a NBA podcast fan as well, just an additional thought: I think the weekly show lends itself perfectly to introduce segments of the Bill Simmons/Zach Lowe variety, i.e. Trade Value- or mid-season MVP rankings and that sort of gimmick (obv adapted to cycling).

    Re: hooks vs hookless and the comparison to cars: cars run pressures similar to MTB, trucks similar to road bikes. Truck tires use air pressure to maintain the shape of the tire, and the load is carried by the sidewall. Bikes use tires to contain air, and the load is carried by the air pressure.

    If it's of use to ye in future pods, here's the how the World Tour wins ranking (incl. GCs) stands after T-A and P-N, that's 35 in total :
    Visma-LAB - 8
    UAE - 5
    Bora-hansgrohe, Soudal-Quickstep - 4
    Lidl-Trek - 3
    Bahrain, Israel-PremierTech, Lotto Dstny - 2
    Alpecin, Decathlon, DSM, Groupama, Tudor - 1
    That leaves Arkea, Astana, Cofidis, Ineos, Intermarché and Jayco as top tier teams still waiting on their first WT win (with Tudor the only Pro Team to get one).
    I'm sure someone recorded Patrick and Benji's guesses for the season, but I can't seem to find it.

    Lotto messed the setup. The fact they aren´t speaking on it and keep riding says volume.
    Hookless has been winning competitions for years now and most road racing tires are all compatible. UAE, Jayco, etc etc... Wheel giants are switching (Corima) as this is the future with. PT mentioned important factors like: lower price and weight, higher quality yield and stronger impact resistance BUT, let´s not forget the very marginal aero benefit of having a tire seating flush on the rim bed without the lightbulb profile.

    I have joined Join 👍 thanks for bringing it to my attention. Never tried a training plan before, what sold it to me was the flexibility as my shift work is awkward for most 9-5 training plans.
    Did my first training ride today, was supposed to be 2hrs but had to reduce to 1hr due to unforeseen problem and Join adjusted the workout to make it a bit more uptempo so that’s cool.
    Bit disappointed it hasn’t synced with Garmin, it synced with Strava just fine.
    Today I watched the opening Tirreno TT whilst training. Need to figure out how to do my rides in Zwift in the future, hopefully then they will transfer through to Garmin.

    This happened to Negasi Haylu Abreha in 2023, it was close to the finish but I can’t recall which race. I believe his front wheel hit a pot hole which burped the wheel, leading it to deflating rapidly and blowing off the rim. I once rode a gran fondo and just before the start I happened to stand next to a bike which front wheel also blew off the rim. It was a former CCC TCR with cadex wheels.. the guy who owned the bike was as surprised as we were but it was probably due to the temperature that day. the sealant never washed off my jersey 😂 I don’t think hookless belongs to the cycling world.
    For amateur riders - just get a nice alloy wheel. Keep it simple.

  • @robertwhyte3435
    @robertwhyte3435 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I think 25 mil internal is probably future proof but I think you should absolutely be running at least a 30 mil tire and at the low end of the range for system weight and road conditions. Also, if we used something to install the tires that was liquid but then got hard, not sticky, at the rim interface like thread locker, then put the sealant in so the sealant isn't lubing the interface. I'd ride hookless but I'd be c a r e f u l.

    Interesting chat about Uno X. I listened to a podcast with their general manager, Jens Haugland, in January and then a week or two later they announced a new GM was taking over as of Feb 1. I found it strange since he seemed so hyped about the team and made no mention of the upcoming change. Wonder if that has anything to do with their performance so far.

    Disappointing that ETRTO Strict agreement has not been reached with ALL Wheel & Tire Mfg for Hookless requirements.
    Hookless Maze = Wheel External Width + Wheel Internal Width + Compatible Tire + Compatible Tire Width + Compatible Tire Max Inflation Limit + 🤞+ 🙏. Adding a Tire Liner like Lotto Dstny had on De Gendt's ROAD wheel is a wild card 🙄
    Scary part is that bikes were being sold with a Hookless Wheel setup and some riders were unaware of the requirements to manage the setup.
    So there have been many examples of tires coming off either at speed or not moving at all.
    More awareness now + Tire / Wheel manufacturers are adding more prominent Warnings & Compatibility Notices on their websites & actual products. Yet incidents continue.
    I'll stick with Hooked rims for the extra safety margin & peace of mind. 😎

    59:55 can someone explain why only the "top 5%" are alienated by hookless rims? As in, do casual riders not suffer grom the problems of hookless? Is it only the pros who use the combination of narrow tyres and high pressures that creates this problem?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque Před 3 měsíci +3

      The narrower tyres and higher pressure they want to run on smooth asphalt exacerbates the problem. Don’t forget, these failures are pretty damn rare. Think about how many bikes are out there with hookless rims on. Every single stock TCR adv Pro thats been sold since 2018 for example. According to my local bike shop most people don’t even know if theyre riding hookless or hooked! If you’re watching this podcast you’re probably in that 5% of people who care. Of course that was a thin air approximation, sarcastic etc, but you get my gist i hope.

  • @kevinberwick1567
    @kevinberwick1567 Před 3 měsíci

    I'm with Benji on the UCI handing out 2 year ban on that Women's team for not being able to field 5 riders, it's 100% outrageous, yeah they should not have tried to deceive the rules, however, if this was more flexible, they probably wouldn't have felt they needed to. The UCI continues to come up with so many negatives that aren't helping the sport, instead they should be looking for more positive ways to progress the sport, they're always coming up with such trivial and negativity, instead they need to be far more supportive and I can think of many more productive things they could be doing in that sense. Firstly, Australia has only two World Tour races and we all know there's a huge investment, time, money and resources goes into small events let alone a WT event and they get all the teams out here for the Tour Down Under because it's mandatory, yet one week later after all of the costs of coming to the other side of the world, our 2nd WT event being Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race is not considered a compulsory WT event, now I don't know what others think about this but this is Outrageously stupid in my opinion and the UCI needs to make changes to this, if I was a sponsor being sold this race as a WT level event, I'd be feeling quiet ripped off personally. This is just yet another example of the outrageous incompetent decision making being done at the UCI, don't get me wrong, I'm sure they do good work and I don't get pleasure out of calling anyone out, I'd much prefer to be complimentary but they just don't seem to care about focusing on the right stuff, 2 speed bumps in the final 100 meters of a women's race recently, with the last one only 30m from the finish line, so many more important things to be done.

    Maybe I'm crazy, but haven't hookless rims been around forever? They've been on my old Fuji since the 90s. Did we all forget, or is this story more about professional riding and tubeless setups?

    • @DR_1_1
      @DR_1_1 Před 3 měsíci

      First we didn't all have Fuji's in the 90's, also rims were often narrower at this time, then it's really mostly about tubeless, with tubes pressure goes in all direction, not only toward the exterior of the rim, so it should not be an issue - with the correct tube size (700 tube on a 650 rim might cause the same issue I suppose)...
