📺 Watch us cycle around Flanders: czcams.com/video/C-DSlcNVius/video.html
saw it this morning and it is TOP NOTCH ! loved the mix of cycling technical data, chat among friends, mentions of past races, the views, the food and what else
Loved this video 👍
In the post race interviews a bunch of riders said they had warned about the run in to Kanarieberg. It is not the gap in the middle of the road that is the problem, but that it is a very wide, downhill road that abruptly funnels into the narrow Kanarieberg, so you have to be in the front. So it basically turns into a very nervous downhill bunch sprint preparation at 70 to 80km/h, the thing that the Tour of Poland was (is?) infamous for.
Also: congratulations to Marianne Vos on her 250th win!
Agree in a full peloton, but here it was a seriously reduced group with less nervosity. It was a mistake. That level of chaos was manageable.
In Liege Bastogne Liege they go downhill for 5 km's leading up to La Redoute and it is just a steep as this one is and the road is just as wide.
When they arrive at the foot of La Redoute the road also narrows dramatically.
It is just the same and in the Tour of Flanders you have many downhills that are almost identical and many of them are leading up to the next hill. So there is always this fight for position down these stretches. In a reduced bunch, it shouldn't be a big issue but unfortunately, crashes and the impact they have on riders, are part of cycling.
Furthermore, these races have a special character and battling for position when the road is going to narrow is an essential part of them. We can ban all wide downhills that lead up to narrow uphills but than we can better stop organising Flemish cobble races.
And you don't even need a downhill for the situation to be dangerous. When they go to the Forest of Wallers in Paris Roubaix, it is a bunchsprint and fight for position as well on wide routes before it narrows to enter the forest.
It is also very dangerous and very often before they arrive on the cobbles of Arenberg, there are some crashes in the stretches leading up to it.
These thing can happen and now we are talking a lot about it because it took out a lot of favorites for De Ronde. If this would have happened in the chasing group with some domestiques, it would be just a footnote, now it is the main story of Dwars Door Vlaanderen. For the domestiques that would have been involved in such an imaginary crash, it would have been just as painful as for the guys that crashed now, but it wouldn't have created all this fuzz. It would have been just another two broken collarbones and some broken ribs to add to the list of cycling injuries. By the end of the year, a lot of riders will have been out with exactly these injuries and very few riders will reach the end of their career without having ever broken a collarbone and a few ribs.
Respect for all the time and attention given to the women’s race too
LRCP is way better than the vast majority of sporting coverage when it comes to analysis of women's cycling. Team previews, race results, they always go into detail.
Agreed - if you haven’t yet, I’d highly recommend watching the women’s Dwars, especially from after the stoppage. Perhaps the most exciting race of the year so far.
The composition of sdworx team was not correct, though. Reusser and Wiebes will be there as well as Majerus. The NFB/Blaak/Gerritse addition was a mistake from some cycling website. They were only added to Dwars d Vlaanderen.
Sdworx likes doing the same year after year.
It's Bling Matthews time baby!
The current rider layout of this race means that I have to watch and pull with my heart, so I am pulling for Bini and Magnus Sheffield. With MvDP being the prohibitive favorite, all of the other teams should be approaching the race with the idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". It is the entire peloton vs. Alpecin/MvDP.
For the women's race, I am a huge fan of Lotte, however, it is great to see Voss reminding the peloton that her being referred to as the GOAT is not just an honorary title. In my heart, I really want Puck Pieterse to get her breakthrough win on the road at this race.
Like most people in Flanders who love cycling, I feel down today and I am not at all looking forward anymore to the tour of Flanders.
Or Roubaix cause everyone knows Mvdp will win 80 percent of the time
I think most people who love cycling feel the same way, wherever they are 😢
I'm in the US and I feel the same. Just so sad for Wout 💔
Yesterday was such a sad day. I love cycling. Im danish so of course i cheer for the danish raiders, but mostly i just love to watch cycling, which i have been doing since mid 80' s and the last 5 years or so, something has happened in cycling that makes it so much more exiting to watch. Almost every race is a blast of aggresivness and opportunistic racing that it makes my heart sing with joy and we live in a time with so many big talents. I fell so bleesed and of course love Mads P and Jonas a little bit more than the others, but just really love to see them all ride. MvDP, Pogi, Wout, Remco, roglic and alot of new talents coming. It is exiting times to be a cycling fan. So when something like that happens like yesterday, i get really sad. Wout season destroyed, styrven, Lidl Trek looked so strong, i actually thought they could give alpecin a real fight. SOOOO Sad. We want the best riders at the big races and we want the best man to win on the day, even though it is not ones farvorite. Well thats my opinion. Please all race organicers. TAKE CARE of the raiders and their health. Racing today is so aggressive, competitive and entertaining, that you can easily make the parkours more SAFE without it getting boring. PLEASE
My one wish for RVV Women’s edition is to see Puck Pieterse, Shirin Van Androoij and Fem Van Empel duking it out in the final of this race. Their battles on in cyclocross have been legendary
I think next year will be all theirs. They are still super young and don't have the stamina of the older riders yet. That was evident in Dwars Door. Shirin couldn't work with Voss at the end and tried calling Longo up for the win. Puck sat on Kopecky's wheel in the final kilometers, only taking a turn when it seemed like Kopecky wasn't closing or maintaining the gap, just hoping to recover enough to win the sprint for 3rd.
Anyone who isn't a pure sprinter should be worried in 2025 IMO.
Yesssss cant wait thanks for the pods
Wout broke his collarbone, 7 ribs, and his sternum, he's not going to make the Giro
fucking hell man, insane bad luck, when most others have come out of the crash relativly unscaved
He'll be lucky to make the Tour
@@davidspagnolo4870 At this point it is not about making it to a race. With so many fractures we can only hope he can make a comeback at all within the year.
@@robertskochinstitut6653he’ll be at the giro, he will be on the turbo within 14 days
Goe bezig mannen!
What i understand from flanders classic is that this decent is still in the parcours for sunday. The difference is that they take out kanarieberg. To make it not as nervous with everyone positioning for Kanarieberg
Wout ugly crying with his cries piercing through the ambulance siren, all the car noises and people talkin will be stuck in my head for a long time. Ive been a fan since 2014 and he has cried a total 3 times since, 2016 CX National Champs, 2022 TDF stage 20, and 2018 Roubaix when his friend died. It makes you think when u see a person ugly crying you thought could never cry like that. Idk though maybe im just too soft
nah even as mvdp fanboy that hit hard, the man has sacrifized his winter, cx worlds for the classics and now falls two times in 2 race days and cant even participate the races he trained the last 6 months for. Hope the big guy wins Something big later this year though
yeah, was genuinely traumatized hearing wout wailing like a wounded animal. so painful on so many levels for him but also for his devoted fans - not only of his athletics but his character. f@ck
I think the ugly crying at first was stuyven, then when you see wout getting on the stretcher is when he started crying...
I understand. I felt so bad when Cav broke his collarbone at TDF last year after coming so close to getting the record and thought it was over for him. I think being the same age as him hit me even harder because realising those guys of that era are coming to the end of their career makes you feel old.. Wout will be back just as strong, he is one of the all time greats.
@ellipticalsoul feel? We are old. Hoping Cav gets it. But he is no Merckz. In boxing terms it is like comparing say Tyson and Ali. Both the greatest in their own way. That being said I didn't like how Giro win. Felt dirty. Another guy, soon to retire, on the podium from another team leads him out to victory by multiple bike lengths. A
Pro wrestling has some plot twists but come on. But boy I do hope he takes the first sprint stage.
Devestated for Wout, Stuyven and Girmay. Cycling can be so cruel. Cheering for Kueng and Mohorič on Sunday. Moho is also always unlucky in Ronde.
Speaking about weird team statements, Arkea put a statement on Instagram that Démare is out of the cobbled classics because of "une grande fatigue justifiant les mauvaises sensations". Now my French is not brilliant, but that sounds more like I how feel after a night of partying than an injury.
Kudos to Benji for mention the return of Valgrens comeback!
Cheering for MVDP on Sunday!! He's basically the underdog now 🎉
???
Thanks guys for making this podcast.
First up Oude Kwaremont behind boys 🤟🇮🇪
haha, loving the accidental "thumbs up" at 9:23
Best women’s coverage out there.
Ooooh Patrick knows 🤣🤣"One meter Sir! " got me laughing so hard.
47:27 And here we get a solution to the problem stated in one of pre-season pods: how do we get Kasia Niewiadoma to win something?
Please someone explain benji the difference between a one hit wonder and one trick pony lol
I had odd for MVP as 1.67. Can't let that slide!
I used it to hedge a gamble on Pedersen at 8.0 though :D
Bad betting line on mvdp. Pedersen not bad
Picking Italians for Belgian monument makes sense after Belgian win in Italian monument. Just for the sake of balance in the universe
More hyped for womens race than the mens race. LFG Vos the boss
Pieterse vs Van Empel will become the new WVA vs. MVDP :)
I got Skujins winning the ronde
Puck Pieterse has been confirmed on the starting list.
Looking so much forward to see Van Empel, Shirin Van Anrooij and Puck Pieterse in the race!
Trentin at 75/1, worth £1 each way I reckon
Recovering from broken ribs takes longer than even a bad broken collar bone. Can't expand the lungs fully until healed.
Need more information. A comminuted break can take a long time to heal and can’t be pinned. Broken ribs that aren’t displaced heal pretty quickly. I’ve done both.
@@YelCan This is true. My first collar bone break was easy to deal with. My second one required reconstructive surgery which took 6 months to recover from (pin in then pin out). Broken ribs took about 2 months to fully heal both times. Glad to be retired....
Gutted for Wout, he's just not getting any breaks, well in the fortune dimension.... Bini as well - he often seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being stateside I'm going to have to go for Jorgenson now for Ronde. Anyone think he's got a chance?
His chances are as good as anyone other than MVDP. He will not beat him in a straight fight, but a lot can happen in this race.
Yes. But all the teams that aren't Alpecin needs to refuse to work with them and send people up the road to get MVDP isolated very early.
why don't you go for MVDP? he deserves to win
I can't just go for the guy who's most likely to win! Whoever wins deserves to win. But I've got to choose a challenger ;-)@@gabrielmazza7923
@@gabrielmazza7923Because it is boring to see the same guy winning over and over with no competition.
Two Dutch winners this weekend
Pogi come save us the race please. It wont be the same without Wout, Pedersen and Girmay:(
People complain when he destroys everyone, and they complain when he isn't there...
Not happy with Jumbo-Visma sauce? I mean... ketones and zone 2 training...
@@DR_1_1i only complain that he isn't here:(
Pedersen is still going idk about girmay but he brobs would't do anything
little crazy
@@tobiasdencker853Mads Pedersen is still gonna feel that crash all over his body on Sunday. He is starting because nothing is broken, but he will still have a tough time.
Tour of Flanders feels sad this year.
man it’s so sad, the expectations for great rvv-roubaix were so unbelievable high this year. has to be one of the worst upsets in recent cycling history
It's so over.
Over before it started. Hopefully Roubaix will be better.
I‘m devastated for the riders, especially Wout. Spring season ruined
Didn’t Wiebes herself said she was going to help Lotte?
She will, just like Reusser. Error from PCS who copied DDV compo in their Ronde starlist.
I've lost all excitement for the spring now ☹️
Certainly for Flanders. It's gonna be a question of how much MVDP will win with. There is some hope for Roubaix. Let's hope for chaos and no team being able to control the race.
Wout van Aert crashing also took out Alpecin's Vermeersch. Which will also likely hinder their ability to control the breakaway. 70-80% odds for MvdP I find that hard to believe. He doesn't have that strong of a team and there likely won't be many teams willing to assist them in controlling the break aways. Perhaps UAE as that's the tactic they know best.
Disaster with Wout 😢 no flanders, robaix or ardennes ..perhaps even Giro 😢
Maybe this opens the door for going to TDF ?
Maybe Wout moves over to Tour de France.
Yes, very wise decision to wait. You guys must be psychic, kind of like MVDP not to ride DDV.
As for Wout and all the other riders involved in the crash, get well soon. I guess it is time for plan B for Visma LAB.
Do we know what happened with Bettiol, he was looking good even before the crash - if he gets in front on MVDP could be a challenge for alpecin
I think He got cramps
He supposedly has Chronic Ulcerative Colitis, so it probably flared up on him after that effort
@@ryancordes7059having an inflamed colon/rectum results in calf spasms or other cramps?
I am devastated. For me, the Ronde is the biggest cycling race of the year. However, after last year, it will not be the same without Pogačar. At least I thought that Van Aert could have a better chance. Although I think that his current performance does not reach the level of Van der Poel, but I really wished him success at last. The year before last, just before Ronde, he got sick. And now that. And he even avoided winning on the cursed Omloop. Nothink helped. It's really terrible for him. Another ruined season.
Whats the value in bringing Kaden Groves?
He can get into a break? He goes up hills ok for a sprinter
You know, I really want to say "come on guys, Trentin? Skuijns? Jorgenson? maybe when Mathieu isn't there, but Mathieu in top form who already won there twice before, no way", but I don't want to jynx it and look stupid. But really, who's gonna beat a top form Mathieu? The best thing that can happen is a copy of Gent Wevelgem where Mathieu overexerts himself and is beaten in a sprint, but that person needs to be able to keep up with him at oude kwaremont, which is no one. The way he rode on Sunday was also on purpose as training for RvV, so I'm pretty sure he's not going to do that again.
I mean, I'm perfectly okay with MVDP winning, he's the goat and deserves it!
De plus will win
Slight critique this time around. It was such a tactically interesting finale of dwaars door, i had hoped you would recap it a little longer but hey thats how things go sometimes :)
It would be interesting, but this is an RVV preview, not a DDV review.
Btw, what was the interesting part? Kung trying to drop Tarling instead of dealing with Benoot? Everything else was pretty simple, just VLAB playing numbers.
I think Lottes timing is more for Roubaix and LBL
Probably true. But probably the same is true for Vos.
@@rulifaller8474 Vos for RVV and Roubaix not really for LBL (too much climbing)
@@MacMasore Yes you are right. I actually think that both Vos and Kopecky would probable most want to win PR.
doing 60kph on the 1 meter bike
You mentioned that Bettiol was cramping again. I wonder if that is linked to his Ulcerative Colitis?
Visma is really the new Wolfpack…ok Cheetahpack
Dygart and Faulkner attack on the flat section and do two women TT. Van Dyke and Reusser chase. Who wins that one.
Kopecky
Really fascinating to say what will happen at short, medium and long term at SD. RVV with all their riders on decent form they will be hard to beat, but Vollering and Reusser are a bit questionable and Kopecky does not look strong enough right noem to just do a AVV, her against the rest of the world. Medium term the dynamics this season will be fascinating. Long term I wonder what their place will be with all other teams being linked to men’s teams and getting more and more budget. They will still have Kopecky and Wiebes, but Vollering will be a big loss and they do not have the biggest talents, or at least they do not seem to be really developing them.
How is pederson? He's the only one who can challenge mvdp
He needs his strong team to really challenge MVDP. Stuyven was his strongest teammate, the race is too hard for Milan, so he has to hope that Skuijins has wonder legs.
Hes ok i think
Bruises everywhere, but nothing broken. It's still gonna hurt everywhere on Sunday and he would have missed training. He might be able to recover a bit for Roubaix. That's the hope.
@@holmbjerg it didn't actually look that bad i saw some pictures of it
@@tobiasdencker853Well Mads Pedersen has written off his chances of victory in Flanders, but hasn't ruled out Roubaix yet. He is absolutely handicaped by his injuries.
Jorgenson and VdP go together since Matteo know that he can't beat VdP. So take out the others for second.
Btw, very bad tactics from Lotte yesterdag (just like in the Omloop); hope she learns from it towards the next 2 most important races
It's probably not an benefit for MVDP that Wout will not be there in RVV..
Right now it is everyone against MVDP. And he has a team which is still quite weak, so he can be forced to attack much earlier than expected.
The teams with two leaders should attack early on the stage and let Alpecin just do the work throughout the entire stage.
hpefully MVDP can still beat the competition! 🙏 fingers crossed!!
I don't care anymore... snif snif snif
It does suck, the likelihood of a interesting flanders is way down
It Will end up being a peak sagan type of race. Mvdp won't win
He will lead out Phillipsen again, but this time mathews wins the sprint without losing his glasses :)
Affini isn't good guys. In the 'groupetto' of E3 he had to let go and DNF because Arnaud De Lie was pulling to hard... Arnaud and co. fibished 6min behind Mads and MVDP... Visma is having a super shitty classics season, but still theyre winning so damn muh tho
“Return of the Lapsed Catholic” - felt really bad for WVA, but a glimmer of hope for Patrick on his possible reversion to the Catholic Church!
Trentin /Bettiol. Nah.
WVA will still win a photo finish at Amstel
I didn't see/hear a Visma rider sorry for Waut, what a band of ...
A large part of Jorgenson's winners interview was talking about WvA, what a dampener it put on the win, and wishing him a speedy recovery. Benoot also spoke at length after the race about him, saying he feels responsible for the crash as it was his wheel Wout overlapped, and how terrible he felt for the rest of the race. But yeah, other than that, silence...🤷🏻♂️
who of the Visma riders did you talk with or see in interviews? All of those I know have expressed their sympathy.
Then you didn't see/hear any interviews. They all expressed sadness for Wout.
Benoit was almost crying in his interview and if you know Matteos subtleness he is in shock about Wout…they are a real team and gutted
Then you may be blind/deaf
